PAX 2008 hands-on: Resistance 2

One of the first things you'll notice when you pick up the controller, is that the controls have been subtly improved. The awkward weapon select wheel and the slight aiming stiffness of the first game have been replaced with a two-weapon system and a considerably more fluid aiming / moving mechanic. While it's still not on par with the tightness of Call of Duty 4's controls, they are much more comfortable now and definitely made running around the level easier.

The tighter controls definitely helps while playing online, because Resistance 2 has whole-heartedly embraced its arcadey roots. While the multiplayer in the first Resistance never attempted the gritty realism that CoD or Rainbow 6 revels in, Insomniac has decided to further push Resistance 2's multiplayer into Unreal Tournament territory. Not that this is a bad thing by any means, but it's a little disconcerting at first to see XP bonuses pop up all over the screen and watch as people activate their powerups (Berserks, as they're called) and start glowing or sparkling in front of you.
While these changes can be offsetting at first, you quickly realize how much they add to the game. The multiplayer in the first game was a little shallow and generic, and never felt truly satisfying (with apologies to the many active fans of it). Meanwhile, the gameplay in Resistance 2 is fast, frantic, and streamlined. The new squad based system and objective based gameplay mechanics means that even with 60 people playing, you feel focused and always know what to do. Feeling lost and want to know the quickest way to the action? Look for the objective marker on your map, and you'll be right in the thick of things in no time.

Unfortunately, in a surprising turn of events -- the graphics in Resistance 2 multiplayer are much of a mixed bag. The environments are much more detailed this time around, and way, way more colorful, and the guns and character models look quite a bit better -- but this has come at the cost of some serious aliasing issues. The whole thing looks gritty in all the wrong ways. It's surprising to play a game like Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty (also by Insomniac) and then come over and play Resistance 2 only to be assaulted by more jagged edges than the first Timesplitters game. It's hard to tell if this is something that will be worked out before the game launches in Novemeber, or it's a necessary compromise from having 60 players in the match, but right now it's a little disappointing.

Well, it kind of makes sense that, as the first FPS you really played online, you would find it less generic than people that have been playing FPS games online for years.
I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a game feeling generic to someone if it's the first game of its type they've ever put time into.

well i agree with both of you. although ive been playing video games since the early 90's, i have never been a fan of FPS's until recently. Resistance was one of the first FPS's i've bought and played online (only thing good out when i bought my PS3) and i have to say that i loved it. now i can understand that it may be generic to someone who has been playing FPS games for years but to me it's great. plus, there are plenty of games that are WAY more generic than Resistance was.
either way, im eagerly awaiting Resistance 2. but as a graphics whore, i have to say i am a bit worried now about the multiplayer graphics considering the videos i saw months ago had pretty bad graphics for multiplayer as well. the thought that it hasnt been addressed yet is making me think they wont address it at all.

ROFLMAO. Who'da thought the legendary RerunWii would show up here. I dont usually troll here, i just thought it'd be funny to totally deny knowing this game exists.

Resistance 1 was great, I've played console FPS for many years now and IMHO Resistance has the potential to do what Halo did for the Xbox franchise for the Playstation brand. As Halo was an Xbox launch title Resistance was a PS3 launch title and has many sequels ahead. This series is the first Playstation FPS that I've ever liked.
I cant wait to see what the second installment has to offer. I'm just torn at the fact that its coming out at almost the exact same time as Gears of War 2, I know this is business and all and a competition but these companies need to consider some of us own more than one console and would like to enjoy everything, whats next Nintendo announcing a new Zelda game being released November 5th? I will be ping ponging systems for most of November, happy gaming all :)
Snowblind @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:32AM
I don't think I'd quite go that far. It was a solid FPS, but it didn't exactly bring anything to the genre quite like Halo did, and I doubt I'd even really consider it to be a "system seller".
But yeah, it's was a very enjoyable game, and I'm definitely looking forward to getting the sequel. There really should be more hype surrounding this, rather than Killzone.

The reason why Resistance can't be compared to Halo is because Halo didn't just bring in Hardcore gamers like R1 did. Halo brought in casual gamers, adult gamers, and tons of child gamers. Halo brought in the entire Xbox owner.
Sinister Rouge @ Sep 3rd 2008 4:29PM
Resistance didn't bring in "hardcore gamers", or at least those of us who have played a decent FPS in the last five years. It brought in the five people dumb enough to pick up a PS3 at launch.
I think it's pretty funny that Resistance wasn't even a Halo killer- a five year old game at the time- let alone a Halo 3 killer!
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:19AM
I just want a FPS that keeps me comming back like COD4. I can't stop playing it.
Do any of you think the new Brothers in Arms will have good multiplayer?
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:22AM
Also, the new FPS's comming out needs a Search & Destroy mode. Its the only mode I play anymore.
Vcize @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:02PM
I hate to be "that guy", but if S&D CoD4 is what you love why not go back and play Counterstrike. It may be 5-10 years old now (depending on whether you play source or the original), but it is basically the same thing with tighter controls and less annoying campers and claymores.

I found the demo at PAX to be way too laggy, although I didn't know that they were hooked into the multiplayer beta. Heaashots went unregistered and people suddenly appeared in front of you. The Beserks didn't seem to do much besides make you glow, but that could have just been because the hit detection was off. Colin is right about the graphics. They just weren't polished at all, which is worrying considering that the game comes out in less than two months. Of course, then you walk across to the Gears of War 2 booth, which comes out in two months as well, and it looks gorgeous. I'll be picking up both titles but I hope Insomniac puts a couple more coats of paint on R2.
j.howlett @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:32AM
i'm not feeling the 2 weapon limit. other than that can't wait to play
Maverick Saturn @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:57AM
I'm actually glad its been cut down to two weapons, what I liked about Halo is that people can have favourite weapons without the concern that it may suck in comparison to say a shotgun or missile launcher (while the alien guns still do suck in comparison to the human guns in my opinion, not the bigger weapons or plasma rifle, but the stupid smaller ones) missles may be powerful, but if they miss, you're left open, this gives a magnum weilder the chance to take advantage, few pops in the head, dead.
Its great to have a favourite, I hate overpowered weapons, makes the whole point of the first weapons useless.
junkisgreat @ Sep 5th 2008 4:33PM
I Played the this demo at PAX too and I thought it wasn't that great. The graphics didn't bother me, it was the guns and gameplay. The guns didn't seem to have any weight to them and the gameplay seemed lacking. It probably didn't help that there was any sound.
Well after that, I chatted with some guys at 1up during one of their meet-n-greats, they said that the demo we were playing at PAX was about 4 months old, and in the newest build things are a lot better. Apparently Sony just wanted something for people to play at their booth, so that's why the dug up the old build. So there might still be hope for this game yet. I still want to see how the 80 player games workout.
benjor0x0r @ Sep 3rd 2008 1:05PM
Colin you forgot to mention a MAJOR thing in your review. The lag. I tried playing at several different stations at several different times, and every single time the game was so laggy that you could not barely move. At one point a friend was locked into the respawn screen for 5 straight minutes while the game tried to figure out what to do. Even in those brief instances where lag suddenly disappeared, the controls didn't feel natural or even well thought out. Instead you find yourself using two buttons to do everything. They definitely have some work to do on this one...
Organic_Shadow @ Sep 3rd 2008 3:37PM
The beta gives me mixed feelings. Graphics are better but the night time level I played was so dark I couldn't see anything, even with tweaking my TV. There are no video options in the game.
It also felt strange to fire returning weapons like Auger and Bullseye. They don't feel the same.
