I was under the impression that you were just paying to re-license the tracks, and they weren't making much money off of it, but I could be mistaken.

I'm with you Dr Scientist. No one has to pay this. If they feel they want to pop in the disc then they should do that and stop complaining. I'm very willing to pay a small fee to re-license the songs to play almost all songs from Rock Band in Rock Band 2

What? This is the #1 feature of RB2 if you ask me. They sold me a music platform, and switching discs isn't complementary to that. I'll have (almost) all of my RB1 songs, all of the DLC, and RB2 songs all in one interface. It's platform evolution more than the traditional "song pack" update these rhythm games have had.

Way to reiterate what I wrote Chris =P
But it's understandable, I don't see why anyone is complaining. It's an option... That means you can opt not to take part and save you $5 or 400MS points

Paying extra five bucks for the songs you've already payed for is a bit of a dick move since it's mostly targeted at people who will rent RB1 to export songs - and they're a relatively tiny minority.
However, $5 or getting of your ass and replacing the DVD is probably as much of fair deal as it can get so you can't really bitch about it.

Man, that stinks... no Enter Sandman.
Anyway, my RB1 disc is really scratched up and I can barely get it to work, so this will come in handy. I'll probably have to borrow my friend's copy, but after I export everything I'll never worry about my RB1 disc ever again! (Unless the need arises to play Enter Sandman)

I'm disgusted that I have to pay anything at all for this transfer to happen. I purchased Rock Band Special Edition, many DLC and a second guitar for this game; it's highly likely I'll spend even more on Rock Band 2 and they're demanding I fork over $5 to play the songs I already fucking paid for? The amount is too small to anger most penny pinchers but big enough to make some money. Malicious and greedy without the face.

You realize, of course, that Harmonix is the devoloper of Rock Band and MTV Games is the Publisher. EA only distributes the game.
While they certainly get a cut of each unit sold, I doubt EA is getting residuals from DLC and downloads like this.
Just trying to get you to place your anger where it belongs.

@Jakka: Except that when they licensed songs for RB1, they didn't anticipate the need for an export option.
Songs in RB1 are licensed for RB1 only. The three (four in the case of Europe) songs that aren't available for one reason or another are due to licensing issues.
RB2 and DLC songs are licensed for the "platform" as opposed to any specific game. Thus they'll hopefully be able to offer the export option again for no cost once they release the next disc.
But at the end of the day, pay the $5 and then sell the disc to Gamestop. There, problem solved....

What I want to know is if you can export only certain songs. Because there's definately some songs I don't care for (I'm looking at you, Fall Out Boy).

He explains in the video that after you export all of the songs, you can delete specific ones from the HDD if you want to.

I don't think anyone's forcing you to read news you don't like. There are lots of other games out there, so just skip over the ones you detest. That's what I do with articles about sports and racing games.
But I think you know that already.

It's one thing to skip over a genre you are not interested in. But you literally hear about the SAME GAME ALL YEAR because it has new content coming out EVERY WEEK!
That is my point.

Yes, that's the reason why those greedy bastards are charging you in first place.
I'm pretty sure that if Rock Band disc had some kind of a DRM, you wouldn't have the "transfer fee".

That is Li'l Chief. A Master Chief action figure and the (sort of) official mascot of X3F.

Question: So, one of the songs that won't transfer over with the export feature is the Europe-exclusive Monsoon. But, what of the NTSC DLC version, will that transfer over to RB2?

I was wondering that too. But then I didn't buy it anyway. So didn't care to ask

Okay, so if I do this and buy the songs and then export and decide I don't want any I can delete them. Now it's 3 weeks later and I realize, hey those songs that I deleted are cool I want them now. Do I have to repay to get another download key, or can I just go through the process again free of charge once I pay for the key one time?

I've already paid the 400 points and done the export. Now, all I have to do is to wait for RB2, and I'll instantly have over 250 songs to have fun with!!!
Timmy & the Lords of the Underworld will not be played on my system any more though. The exported version of that song is already deleted. :-)

what about the extra downloaded songs (i.e. purchased song packs)? are they playable in Rockband 2 or forever attached to Rockband one?

I will likely wait a while to do this. I only have the "20 GB" (as in, 13 GB) HDD.
I play most of the time online, so all of my DLC goes to waste as it is (get a band of four...one likely will always have 0 DLC songs).
If I haven't but many more DLC songs by the end of the year, maybe I'll do this then.

Anyone else shocked that a song by the guys that shut down Napster won't transfer over to the other game?

I honestly cannot believe that people are complaing about this $5. Here's a little trick.
1) Pay the $5 and transfer the songs over
2) Sell your RB1 disc for $15-20
3) Enjoy having an EXTRA $10-15 AND not having to get up and change discs on top of that.
4) Stop being an idiot (this will be the toughest of the four steps).
