Castle Crashers patch still without release date
Look guys, the cute little cartoon characters thing? Yeah, that ain't workin' so much these days. Folks are upset, and rightly so. Castle Crashers is broken. We know, we know, you told us a patch was coming. But why isn't it here yet!
... Er, what's that you say? You just had a "great talk" with Microsoft about it? Well, by golly, gosh, that's great news! But, you say. But what? But you don't have a "specific time frame"? Oh, don't worry about it. Those 1200
are just water under the bridge ... Aw, would you look at that: Those knights with their big blocky heads and stumpy wumpy hands -- how precious.

I haven't had 1 successful try to play CC online :(
Solid Chief @ Sep 5th 2008 11:52PM
I've had a fair amount (of good ones). However, the lag while in the game is a bit of an odd one...Like it'll take 0.5 seconds to respond to your actions, which at first is disorienting, and thn you go back to offline and its you hit air because your used to preemptive strikes.
Jake11 @ Sep 5th 2008 5:25PM
wow, you sound really pissed off about this
LeMuRfArT @ Sep 5th 2008 5:26PM
good thing i only play with four people in the same room. i could see me getting pretty pissed if i payed for this game and couldnt connect to a game online
343 Guilty Fart @ Sep 5th 2008 5:28PM
Well, 2D animation is "by definition" NOT HD anyways as we all know from reading the 'stiq.
MC Double Def DP @ Sep 5th 2008 5:29PM
I haven't had much problem online. Occasional drop out and fail to connect but I get that on all kinds of games. But I did get bummed when I got all the way to the bat on insane mode for some super cheap leveling and then it didn't save properly. Oooh well!
sambo @ Sep 6th 2008 8:27AM
Just throwing this out there in case anyone doesn't know...
If you start a game and your character saves are not there. Go back to the title screen and Hit the xbox button to bring up the live menu, then log out. Once you log back in your game saves and hidden characters will be back.
I have to do this everytime I play.
please fix!!
Dirty @ Sep 5th 2008 5:29PM
Local is much more fun anyways. I guess it should work, but yea... get over it.
Zertoss @ Sep 5th 2008 5:31PM
I haven't tried playing online due to no one on my friends list having the game (damn them all) and my lack of desire to play with people I don't already know.
Faar @ Sep 5th 2008 5:32PM
Oh well, they only had an extra year to get things right, what do people expect...
Ranus Studios @ Sep 5th 2008 5:36PM
I didn't even know there was a problem with it. To be fair, I haven't played the thing and certainly wouldn't play online, but still- usually I hear about these things.
RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Sep 5th 2008 5:47PM
No. go away.
josh @ Sep 8th 2008 5:06PM
well it stated happening on the second day i got it. the online does dropp but i wonder if it has to do with a time frame. my friends and i were playing it late midnight and no problem , played it at 12 noon and started dropping the game. so who knows. just hope they get it fix asap. is a fun game. different. is like final fight mix with kirby and paper mario. lol. with little of south park humor. my nephews and i love it. we have so much to laugh. and no im not a kid. im 27.
Ryan @ Sep 5th 2008 6:01PM
2D isn't HD..."by definition"? Where do I get this magic 3D Telewision of yours that somehow isn't a flat, 2D screen?
Dirty @ Sep 5th 2008 6:36PM
Its an inside joke... you must not read everything joystiq post word for word.
Isaac @ Sep 6th 2008 2:25AM
The magic television store.
Don't ask stupid questions.
Clinton oxendine @ Sep 5th 2008 6:03PM
whats broken in this game. i dont have it so i dont know
Aeikozz @ Sep 5th 2008 6:03PM
400 points acceptable understanding.
800 well i could give it a little leaway
1200? oh hell no. everything bout it best be awesome to warrant that extra 5$.
So not worth the drama.
Geist @ Sep 5th 2008 10:51PM
It is totally worth the money if you play local. My friends and I have sunk at least 20 hours into the game, chopping shit up and unlocking more, finding new secrets, etc. The online apparently sucks, but oh well, we never play online.
Vcize @ Sep 5th 2008 6:06PM
It's such a shame, because this game is soooooooooo much fun in co-op.
We typically get disconnected every 30 minutes or so, and do every thing we can to get it to save (like when we complete a level, we try to exit out of the games ourselves so it'll save, and then restart before the next level), yet it still drops our saves all the time.
But we keep coming back to it. And I am the type of person who gets pissed off and chucks out a game if I have to replay 5 minutes of it yet I keep coming back to this, so that really says something about the awesomeness of the game aside from the network bug.
Vcize @ Sep 5th 2008 6:08PM
And to those saying "get over it"...get over yourselves. If you bought a game that was built on leveling up your character as you progress through a campaign and every time you booted it up (or played it for more than 30 minutes) there was a 50% chance that all your progress from the last time you played would be undone then you wouldn't be too happy about it either.
Snowblind @ Sep 5th 2008 6:18PM
I think you're exagerating a little. I've never once had a problem with my data, and the majority of people talking about this game don't seem to be either.
Online is another matter, but I've only played the game offline co-op, so I can't really comment on that.
Poisoned Al @ Sep 5th 2008 6:17PM
I've never had any problems. It might because I have a network set up like an office, like CC's creators would have (IE hard wired with Cat5 into a router via a hub) and none of that Wifi crap and running it though a PC.
Hey, does anyone want to know who awesome that game is over Live?
/bastard
danny. @ Sep 5th 2008 6:23PM
I don't have trouble until I get three players... it's frustrating because most of my friends that play this live in a different state. That said, I don't regret getting the game. I've allready beaten it three times with a bunch of guys above ten levels. All you can quaff sucks. Just throwing that out there.
capt_carl @ Sep 5th 2008 6:27PM
I played for a good two hours with my friends the week the game came out with no problem. I dunno what the big deal is really.
The only "bug" I see is that the Hominid can't change weapons, but yet I somehow got him stuck with a pitchfork. Dunno if it's a bug in the game or what, but you try beating the game with only the pitchfork and see how much fun it is.
Vyrtigo @ Sep 5th 2008 6:30PM
I can't wait for tomorrow's post that says there is still no release date. Perhaps the next day as well. This is definitely news worthy.
AoE @ Sep 5th 2008 6:39PM
right Vyrtigo, because this is so very clearly a news site, not a gaming blog. I hate to tell you bro, but there are posts about cakes too...
AoE @ Sep 5th 2008 6:38PM
Wow James, you sound really pissed in this post! I guess I'm glad I have friends in real life... no connection issues when you're playing with 3 others on the same xbox! You should... get some real life friends dude, then xbl connectivity issues won't be nearly as devastating.
llamapalooza87 @ Sep 5th 2008 6:52PM
You realize that they really only have one programmer, right?
When a developer has a 100-person team, it's very easy to get that patch out in two days. Fulp has to go through three years' worth of code essentially by himself, find the buggy network code (which was clearly not a problem in their test environments, meaning they have to try and use a live, unalterable game to find the problem).
Just play in local co-op until the patch. The game is totally awesome, and if you honestly think that this amazing game––even with only local co-op––isn't worth the $15 when you'll gladly pay $60 for the latest broken generic FPS just because it's on a disc, I don't really care about your complaints.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Sep 5th 2008 8:15PM
Dude, that's no fucking excuse. They charged $15 for the game and considering how long it took to develop, it should've been up to standards in first place!
AoE @ Sep 5th 2008 8:42PM
@Jakka,
I think you'll find, if you compare it to the pantheon of games that debuted at a $15 price-point (I'm not talking live either here brother, if you're going to drag the price into the debate, you get to compare it to any/all games that clocked in at $15 new), that pound for pound this one is pretty good. You're acting like they broke your wallet or something.
Only online play is really broken, and there is a patch incoming. Quit overreacting, they didn't tell everyone to fuck off; rather they said they're hard at work on a patch.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Sep 5th 2008 8:49PM
"only"
AoE @ Sep 5th 2008 10:07PM
Right, only. Maybe you didn't notice this... but Castle Crashers is in fact not Warhawk, it's not multiplayer online only, I am sorry to inform you. You've got friends in real life, right? Try inviting them over and playing together on the same 360, it's pretty fun; and then maybe you'll stop stressing about the online situation. Stress is bad dude, it leads to all sorts of health issues.
Gronk @ Sep 5th 2008 7:09PM
I won't be buying anymore Behemoth titles after this debacle, and I thought Castle Crashers was an excellent game. I particularly like how they shut down their "dev blog" as soon as people figured out they just bought a broken game. Real classy.
AoE @ Sep 5th 2008 10:08PM
As classy as people acting like a bug is the end of the world?
Master Bruce @ Sep 5th 2008 7:58PM
Honestly though, is it really that big of a deal? Sure its annoying to get dumped out randomly during a game, but sheesh, its not enough to get me foaming at the mouth.
And 1200 points is a lot of money? Sheesh, I spend the ream money equivalent on random crap all the time.
Tombstone @ Sep 5th 2008 8:51PM
I wish people would stop dissing this game. Definitely one of the best games I played in a long time. And I played this 3P Co-op ONLINE and it worked fine.
I fucking hate the whiners. I fucking hate them. The Behemoth has made an excellent game, and your all being whiny bitches about it. $15 is nothing.
Fuck you guys who keep whining about this shit. I'm sorry about my language, but people have pissed me off. Especially when I have such respect for a developer like the Behemoth, for doing two remarkable games that some big named companies could never do.
And I think I'm done.
burgerbat @ Sep 5th 2008 10:54PM
You are so incredibly wrong about this. Just because you love The Behemoth's work doesn't excuse the fact they released a broken game. Just because you can play online and 90% of people can't doesn't mean there's not an issue there, dumbass. Yeah, the game's great, but some of us bought the game with the intention of playing it with friends online, and we were led to believe this would be possible, but it's not. Yeah, $15 isn't a whole lot of money, but I don't buy games that are half-baked for any amount of money. And this one is. I'm glad Joystiq is calling them out, because it's not fair that they are hiding behind their cult and indie status instead of patching the fucking game to play as it was intended. And to you fucking apologists that are quick to remind everyone what a small crew The Behemoth has, I ask you why in the fuck did they take the whole company to PAX right after their game was released with serious flaws instead of staying home and making sure their game worked as promised? Oh yeah, that's right, they don't give a shit. And these general blanket statements that a patch is inbound do little to quelch mine and others' anger. We, as gamers, have let this "unfinished/untested release" shit get out of hand. At least most companies have the sense to patch a broken game before most people have played it, but not Behemoth. They had an extra year of dev time, and still borked it. No amount of fanboy-ism can deny that shit, fucker.
Solid Chief @ Sep 6th 2008 12:03AM
Its been really good for me. I've played this game so much already on my own or with friends or online. I've had quickmatch fail on me, but normal searching is fine.
Best $20 ever ("OH WAIT IT R $15 & TOO MUCH", said the Americans, who have incredibly cheap games and consoles and pretty much everything else compared to most other countries)
therpham @ Sep 6th 2008 12:05AM
Here's the bug I hope they fix:
My roommate was playing while signed in on my Xbox and decided he was done. He was still on the map screen, but I didn't think there was a need to go back to the title screen. I thought signing him out would kick us back there. So I signed him out, and, not paying attention to the background, signed in as myself. It saved the green knight he was playing over mine (which luckily I hadn't touched yet), but it also replaced my gold count with his (lower) one and my ark and armory with his less-populated ones. Basically, everything of his replaced mine except for my non-green knight characters.
I was a little sad, but it's not like I won't be playing this game all the time until Rock Band 2 comes out anyway. I can reaccumulate that stuff. It's still a bug that shouldn't be there, though.
dangcucu @ Sep 6th 2008 1:20AM
well, i love Castle Crashers & i can understand ppl who are pissed for the online issue when that was their main reason for getting it. I personally just accepted the fact & just continued to play local co-op (1%) or single player (99%)until the "patch" is released to me it's that much fun. The game is awesome & a steal for 15.00; as far as bugs go... some bugs show up in AAA titles like Madden, Halo, COD, Gears... or the site itself *(remember "free" Undertow)for their boo-boo due to possible overload from COD4 maps dL. Crap happens. But, to get the pitchforks & all that jazz for something that may or may not be their fault truly sucks.
Now, if you bought an xbox box from ebay for 100.00 and got pissed over paying 100.00 for a cardboard box then scream & rant but if you bought one of the best hack & slach game(s) in XBLA/hack 'n slash history & then we all discovered it has a bug be upset but put on your tech caps & tshirt of love ppl. Crap happens is what you do when it happens that determines your character. and in this case theirs too. as for me, i like to show support for The Behemoth (great game guys) & say i feel for you guys who bought it for the sole purpose of online play. peaCE.
Obie @ Sep 6th 2008 1:52AM
I played through the whole game with 2 friends.
While I had no real lag or game save issues. I did have a handful of disconnects.
I really enjoyed the game, and hope the issues get fixed ASAP.
youhavemail @ Sep 6th 2008 5:59AM
I'm calling tomorrow to get a refund.
Sorry guys, I was under the impression he game had online co-op. I haven't been able to connect to one since it's release. I might re-purchase once it is fixed, but until then I'll view this debacle as false advertisement.
Danny F. @ Sep 6th 2008 12:43PM
Times must be rough for ya to ask for $12 bucks back..
Just wait at least till next week, I'm sure the patch will be out by then.
nick_mjr @ Sep 6th 2008 6:35AM
Remember $60 8 bit nintendo games? That's what my folks paid for Double Dragon 3 back in the day. Castle Crashers is 10 times that. $15 is nothing compared to the value.
Dark Freddie @ Sep 7th 2008 8:26AM
Come on, let's be honest. Yes this is a fuck up but as someone who works in customer service for a living, there are times when things get out of hand with the complaining. Yes, it's a problem, and I can even understand wanting your money back if you only bought it for the online co-op but for crying out loud, don't get seethingly mouth-foamingly angry over it. It's a game, and many of you have payed $60+ for the latest Madden game which is essentially the last game with a new number on the end and I don't see you complaining about that. The last time I paid $15 for a game it was either old enough to be on the last console generation's launch title list, or the purest amount of suck I've ever seen, (I.E. Wartech on the 360). The fact that this game can inspire fanboy-ism when quality games like Too Human get ragged on for stupid things just because Dyack can't keep his mouth shut is rediculous. I wouldn't have paid $60+ for Castle Crashers, but it was pretty damn good and I would've paid $30 or so for it without batting an eye.
grtgonzo @ Sep 6th 2008 10:50AM
The game will be fixed soon enough. I think it is well worth the M$ points. I would recommend this game to any beat-em-up fan.
Danny F. @ Sep 6th 2008 12:35PM
Yeah but you only paid about $12 bucks to play... plus theyre working on it so why bitch so hard for it.
You should be grateful they are working on it then leaving everyone in the dark.. jeez. Sometimes ppl can be really ungrateful. This game was worked on by a small handfull of ppl which allowed the small pricepoint as well.
So please (especially as a writer) take those things into consideration. This wasn't some od major system seller game retailing at $60 bucks. Although I have to admit this game made a few of my friends make the jump to a 360, including for fable 2 and gears of war 1 & 2.
Danny F. @ Sep 6th 2008 12:38PM
Sorry for sounding harsh ( which I admit I was), I just find it kinda harsh to be holding a gun at developers like that when they already admitted to the problems and have said that they are doing theyre bestto fix it.
miggy @ Sep 6th 2008 2:44PM
Developer to the defence.
On-line testing takes place on a private Microsoft system called PartnerNet. If the game works on there, and it has to pass a barage of nasty tests to prove it does, then it should work when the game is released.
The fact that no such problems happen on PartnerNet but a significant problem happens on the public network - as has happened on other titles - indicate that the problem is with the system, not with the developer. That also makes it harder to fix.
