Metallica's 'Death Magnetic' album for Guitar Hero 3 this Friday, forward compatible with World Tour
Beginning this Friday, September 12th, you can get a jump on building your Guitar Hero World Tour library by purchasing the new Metallica album, Death Magnetic, on Xbox Live (1440
/ $18) or PSN ($17.99) -- you can even practice the guitar parts using Guitar Hero 3. In other words, the DLC album, which happens to be releasing day and date with the not-for-toy-instruments version, is compatible with both games, but you'll have to wait until World Tour is released in late October to channel your inner Lars or reach deep inside your chest cavity to unleash your best Hetfield impersonation. What you will get on Friday, assuming you do have a copy of Guitar Hero 3, is access to two exclusive cuts of "Suicide & Redemption" with extended solos by Hetfield and Kirk Hammett.
"We're proud to be setting a new precedent for our two industries, making an entire new album available in two different mediums simultaneously," Activision's Tim Riley boasted. How about you do us one better? An entire new album available in two different mediums in one download! We'd sure like to export those tunes to ourZune iPod as we wait for World Tour. (But maybe that's just a pipe dream.)

Hopefully it's more master of puppets and less saint anger.
Hafk @ Sep 8th 2008 3:59PM
From what I have heard, it is a step up from Re/Load and St. Anger. I really hope it tops the Black album and gets into Classic Metallica area, but I need to listen to more songs of it to come up with a good opinion.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 8th 2008 4:03PM
It is definitely better than the Black album and everything after. Most if not all of the songs are on youtube now since the album leaked. Personally I would go with
1. Master of Puppets
2. Justice
3. Ride The Lightning
4. Death Magnetic
5. Kill em All
Most after hearing it will probably put it under kill em all at 5 but I personally enjoyed this one more. The fact that it's even being included in most people's discussions as best metallica album says enough about it.
jsn @ Sep 8th 2008 4:03PM
it's more like the new stuff than the old stuff. Not that that makes it instantly bad, but there's nothing about it that will make you think master of puppets or AJFA. It sounds like their last few albums with a new producer, one who liked their old sound and tried everything he could to get them back there. They're just not that band anymore though.
jsn @ Sep 8th 2008 4:05PM
oh and I've heard all the songs off it and of them, only one really got my blood pumping. The others were just kinda meh, good production and all but nothing that moved me.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 8th 2008 4:14PM
Well... Metallica. Very good band, but I don't consider them as good as other bands.
I definitely prefer Deep Purple, Rainbow, Motorhead, etc. a lot better than Metallica.
I'm really not hyped at all by their new album.

Go into it with very low "St. Anger" level of expectations and you'll be very pleasantly surprised. Definately a throw back to their old albums but still staying current. Not a new classic but definately a good listen. Kudos to them.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 8th 2008 4:33PM
I just saw the new video on YouTube. Lars really sucks.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 8th 2008 4:35PM
Sorry, but the new song really sucks. It sounds like another MTV "rock" song.

RavenPaul @ Sep 8th 2008 7:38PM
It sounds like St. Anger with guitar solos. I think it sucks. No way I would pay 1 cent for it. It actually sounds like Megadeth a lot, and not the good Megadeth.
arrrgh @ Sep 9th 2008 2:04PM
it's actually more black album-ish
but hey close enough right?
deaftly @ Sep 8th 2008 3:57PM
I heard the new single on the radio yesterday, it seems like they are just trying way too hard to sound like the old metallica. Old bastards.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 8th 2008 4:07PM
I'm assuming you mean the day that never comes. Yeah that's probably one of the weaker songs on the album (although still a good song IMO).
What they've done with this album is follow a similar pattern to their old ones. The first and last songs are faster and more thrash-like. The 4th song (The one you likely heard) is a ballad type song, like One and Unforgiven and Sanitarium and the 9th song is an instrumental.
They also went back to having ridiculously long songs too, but with solos this time unlike St anger. The shortest song is like 5:01 and the longest is just under 10 minutes with most averaging in the 6:30-8 minute range.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 8th 2008 4:00PM
I downloaded the album (sorry lars, I'll still buy it!) and it's fantastic. Not 1 bad song on there. Too bad I traded in GH 3 a long time ago and now have to spend even more money to get it.
Anyway, they've really returned to their old selves with this album, probably about as much as possible given the fact that they're all like 45 years old and fucked up from all the drugs and alcohol. I really look forward to playing it.
copa @ Sep 8th 2008 4:45PM
"Not 1 bad song on there."
You better hope so, because fuck if Activision is going to let you buy individual, unbundled tracks.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 8th 2008 7:40PM
Yeah that's normally fucked up, but in this case I don't mind.
DCBlack @ Sep 9th 2008 10:05AM
You could just wait for world tour since you traded in GH3.
Dani Reader @ Sep 8th 2008 4:06PM
I don't like guitar hero, but that album artwork is win. And unlike another poster, I am NOT sorry that i will be downloading this album, lars. You might be a superb drummer, but you are a prick.
Eric @ Sep 8th 2008 4:08PM
I am going to be the first to say it but...."Fuck Metallica!" use to be a fan but ever since they decided that millions of dollars was worth more then the music they make. I lost all the respect i once had for them. There the biggest sell outs, since Sugar Ray and that really bad.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 8th 2008 4:13PM
You should at least listen to the new music before using that incredibly tired sellout argument. Everyone knows they did already, and nothing on their new album would be considered radio friendly (if only for the length of the songs) or MTV friendly.
Savage @ Sep 8th 2008 4:08PM
Now the guys from Harmonix should come out and be like "There forwards compatibility is a joke. I bet once they saw that our game had DLC compatible with both games they rushed to see how fast they could get it in their game."
"We're proud to be setting a precedent..." gimme a break guy.
Savage @ Sep 8th 2008 4:10PM
Now the Harmonix guys should be like "I bet when they saw that our game had forward compatible DLC they were like 'how fast can we get that into our game.'"
Savage303 @ Sep 8th 2008 4:14PM
Sorry for the double post.
Now triple I guess.
Tegolin @ Sep 8th 2008 4:16PM
If I wanted one song I would still have to pay $17 for (Kill) them all. Activision knows how to please.
What song should I buy from Peace Sells?
Cesaria (Gamertag: Cesaria360) @ Sep 8th 2008 4:21PM
I have to admit, that's a fucking sweet album cover.
Haggard @ Sep 8th 2008 4:58PM
That's odd, I only now took a proper look at it and figured it was iron filings. I'd previously figured it was drawn to represent the angst of ageing rockers by an angry man armed with a pencil.
Zeromaru @ Sep 8th 2008 4:27PM
Wasn't the first single promised as Rock Band DLC?
Slyce @ Sep 8th 2008 4:49PM
Unforgiven 3? Oh boy.
Rollins @ Sep 8th 2008 4:58PM
It honestly isn't a bad song.
CenturionRyan @ Sep 9th 2008 10:57AM
It's not bad, really.
It's just that they could have called it something else and nobody would have noticed. There's no horn intro, and no 'What I've felt, what I've known...' chorus.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 8th 2008 7:44PM
Yeah it's really not bad surprisingly. It has a pretty mean solo in the middle...and no James doesn't say somethin like you're unforgiven 3 :P
DeadPlasmaCell @ Sep 8th 2008 5:01PM
Nice.. A bit on the expensive side, but the fact that you can bring it over to World Tour and get the full band experience from it makes it a pretty sweet deal. Especially if you jumped on the Best Buy Pre-order deal and get the stuff for free.
Case @ Sep 8th 2008 5:10PM
Want to save 18 bucks on DLC...Best Buy had a deal where if you reserve the album you get a code for the DLC for free.

Hafk @ Sep 8th 2008 5:26PM
Actually, its only for the deluxe edition now. I believe it was for the $10 album for Labor Day weekend only.
The Oggmonster @ Sep 8th 2008 6:50PM
Yeah hopefully because I reserved it when there was only one version on the best buy site.
DCBlack @ Sep 9th 2008 10:14AM
That seems to be only for the 360, I don't see any mention of PS3. Just pointing that out.
Hafk @ Sep 8th 2008 5:22PM
Gonna do some full-album price comparison as Price per song.
RB's Screaming for Vengeance and The Cars albums - $1.67
GH's Death Magnetic - $1.63
RB's Doolittle - $1.36
Competitive DLC pricing? Finally. I could see Harmonix releasing Death Magnetic for 1440 MSP. Very reasonable.
Good Job Neversoft. Now, just release the songs as individual downloads, and you have fixed half of your DLC problems.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Sep 8th 2008 5:40PM
Good info there. It really is a great deal since you can carry it over to World Tour and every song on there is like 6+ minutes.
that guy @ Sep 8th 2008 5:28PM
Haha, it's a vagina. There, it's been said.
This is a very good Metallica album. Don't even try to tell me that 'Suicide and Redemption' isn't heavy is sh*t, folks.
Don't base the whole album just on The Day that Never Comes (which isn't a horrible song). There's a lot more to like on here. The riffs are pretty badass and Kirk's solos are the best they've been in a long time.
ChuckJ @ Sep 8th 2008 6:09PM
ALL of the tracks are on YOUTUBE. You can check them out and decide if you want to buy it or not.
If you havent heard any thing but the single, it is your own fault. Like I said, just go to Youtube, search Metallica Death Magnetic and youll find EVERY TRACK. Do it. NOW

Mike @ Sep 8th 2008 6:56PM
Will this be available on PS3? The article only mentions X-Box Live. I stopped giving Metallica my money awhile ago, gut I would like to play their new album on GH3 for PS3..
Matt @ Sep 8th 2008 7:38PM
metallica is one of the bands that have made DRM an everyday reality. No thank you.. I will not support this crap.
Its funny when a band wants to sell a 20 year old album for the rest of their life... probably because they know their old music is the ONLY GOOD METALLICA MUSIC, and it is not that great, but more hyped by the public to popularity.
guidedbyvoip @ Sep 9th 2008 2:45AM
And Metallica sues Activision in 3, 2, 1...
G$ @ Sep 9th 2008 8:33AM
MetallicA lyrics seem to have hit a new low. Cyanide's chorus is just plain awful. Although, I do agree with the words. MetallicA has already died, they just need to stop recording.
Some bands really need to quit recording new material (Rolling Stones, AeroSmith, etc.).
Ken @ Sep 19th 2008 12:01AM
The album is fantastic. My only gripe is they mixed it really loud, so it's like a wall of sound. I prefer a little more dynamic range... but overall it's awesome.
