Games overtaking music sales at HMV
UK retailer HMV's chief executive, Simon Fox, says game sales may surpass music at the company within 18 months. Video games now account for 19% of sales at the music store, with an increase of 4.1% occurring in the last three months, Fox tells The Sun.
Earlier this year, the UK's Entertainment Retailers' Association noted that game sales overtook music at retail and were on the way to catching DVD revenues. Considering HMV's iconic symbol is that of a dog with a phonograph, we've gone ahead and updated the image for the new generation.

I dont think anyone around here is surprised by this.
Money I spent this year on music = ehhh 5 bucks I think
Money I spent this year on Games = enough to piss off my future wife.

My local HMV has been getting rid of a lot of its stock to make room for dedicated areas for games, which had previously lived across one wall. This would be great if it wasnt for the fact that its now impossible to find any dvds which arent in the chart (or on special offer) in my town anymore, the situation is even worse if you want music. We have 3 game stores and an HMV on the same street...good time to be a gamer, less so a movie lover D:!

I love that picture.

Yeah, I work in an HMV and games are certainly becoming a bigger focus in the store. This weekend we reorganised most of the store to give games bigger and more visible shelf space.
The section for PC games alone (which had been steadily shrinking) about tripled in size.

It's sad to see this happening as I would be more of a music lover than a video game lover.
I know you'd think that's weird considering I'm commenting on a hardcore video game blog but it's true.

But HMV is a huge rip off :S
You have to remorgage your home just to buy a Platinum game. They were still selling GTA3 for £45 when Vice City went Platinum... I think I'll stick with Woolworths and Game thanks very much.
juju187 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:26PM
woolworth are still around?
i havent seen one here in chicago since at least the 80's

They're commonplace in the UK. There's one about half a mile down the road to me.

They also are all over Australia...
But HMV can have some decent prices, they were the cheapest for Soulcalibur III when I got it long ago
Haggard @ Sep 9th 2008 3:23PM
I'd imagine that HMV is only getting 19% of their sales as games because they're so damn overpriced (even on console games.. saw Blacksite for £50 there the other day). No shops have worked out that new PC games = £25 yet, even though amazon and play.com have been doing that for years.

While its nice that there is another competitor for games here (Canada), it would be more relevant if their prices were better. Most of the time, I can go to EB or Future Shop and get the same thing cheaper.
It's also a PITA since to do this, they are significantly downsizing their stock on CD's. I rarely find anything that I'm looking for now. And they only carry new releases if its mainstream crap that they know will sell (i.e. Backstreet Boys and Metallica). Yes...I buy CD's - until DRM is eliminated and there is no danger of something like C-61 in Canada, I will not buy from a service like itunes.

It's just too bad that HMV sucks, and arbitrarily marks up the prices of games by 10 to 20$ (here in Canada).
On the flip side, HMV has a decent stock of PSP games, and they're the only place in my city that seems to even want to stock PSP games......but again, they're hideously overpriced.
