New Apple ad touts iPod Touch as 'best portable device for gaming'

At today's Apple event (aptly titled "Let's Rock"), Steve Jobs unveiled a new ad for the revised iPod Touch, essentially showcasing the iPod Touch's (and similarly the iPhone's) gaming capabilities, claiming, "It's the best portable device for playing games." We're wagering at least a few Sony and Nintendo executives are texting each other "lolwut." As noted by Engadget, "gauntlet: THROWN."

Also shown at the Apple event: a new soccer title – Real Soccer 2009 – and Need for Speed Undercover. Check out Engadget for more information from Steve Jobs' presentation. We'll update when the ad is uploaded to the interwebs.

[Update: Apple has launched an updated iPod Touch page on its website, touting the device as "the funnest iPod ever." The page is heavily focused on gaming and has a "watch the ad" link from the gallery section ... which, as of this writing, is officially slammed.]

Reproduce Phantom Hourglass or Chains of Olympus, and then see if you can roll with the big boys.

No doubt. Also I like to have real controls on my machine. Not some touch screen button or tilt the device to play. I'll admit its a nice feature to have games on the iPhone but it juts can't compare to the PSP for me personally.

And while you're at it, Apple, charge 40 dollars for it, too.

So true. Chains was spectacular. You need buttons for gaming - touch screen only hasn't worked yet.

I think they could do without buttons if the screen rumbles a little when you touch it.

...not sure how you'd do it without a D-pad, though. Having a touch screen dpad or analog stick could work, but I've yet to see it implemented and still feel proper.

Or look at the larger picture - how about Sony, Nintendo try to sell 160 million PSPs/DSs, or try to become the number one music distributor in any format, and then tell us again: who's really rolling 'big boy' style?

LOL, too true. Just par for the course for Apple marketing. They like to pretend nobody has ever done what X new Apple product can do.

In worlwide sales, the GameBoy in all its iterations since the original, the GameBoy has outsold all the iterations of the iPod.

The difference here, ill, is that Sony and Nintendo never purported to make the world's greatest portable music player.

How many touch-screen ONLY DS games are any good? Yeah, not many...

There was Canvas Curse, if nothing else, that was totally worth it

Wario Ware, Canvas Course, Touch and Go, Mario vs donkey Kong 2, Big Brain Academy, point and click adventure games, Phantom Hourglass, Meteos... FPS games (in conjuction with the dpad and shoulder button).

Strategy games are also a lot more fun and accesible to control with the stylus, specially grid based strategy games.

A touchscreen is a nice adition. But you need also buttons.

Also... Elite Beat Agents... one of the best rhytm games, and you need touchscreen to enjoy it.

That game was indeed awesome.

I also tremendously enjoyed Warioware.

Layton ruled... Trying to think of other touchscreen only games, those are the 1st 3 that jump out at me.

Oh I forgot Ninja Gaiden, Magical Starsign, Advance Wars, Age of Empires, Profesor Layton...

But, touchscreen should be an addition. The DS has a touchscreen and buttons.

PSP is limited to touchscreen, thats why it cant compete with the PSP and DS.

*iPod Touch is limited...

I would guess from 'FPS games (in conjuction with the dpad and shoulder button)' that he doesn't understand the word 'only'... However, to be fair, a lot of those games are touch-screen only and I'd simply forgotten about them (Canvas Curse for example, was brilliant). I wouldn't consider many them of them good though, and in most cases where you CAN play a game with just the touch screen (Phantom Hourglass) it's so fucking awkward, and you'd be insane to not use the buttons for equipping weapons and opening menus etc...

In any case, only having a touch screen would seriously cut down the amount of stuff you can do on it. It's unlikely to have many 'proper' games

Don't knock Ibanez man. The blazer they made back in '81 was a spectacular guitar. Also came from the factories that the famous 80s Squiers, seeing as Fender actually bought the factory from Ibanez due to being worried about the competition. And the musician that they made at the same kinda time for their bass range was pretty good.
