New Apple ad touts iPod Touch as 'best portable device for gaming'
At today's Apple event (aptly titled "Let's Rock"), Steve Jobs unveiled a new ad for the revised iPod Touch, essentially showcasing the iPod Touch's (and similarly the iPhone's) gaming capabilities, claiming, "It's the best portable device for playing games." We're wagering at least a few Sony and Nintendo executives are texting each other "lolwut." As noted by Engadget, "gauntlet: THROWN."
Also shown at the Apple event: a new soccer title – Real Soccer 2009 – and Need for Speed Undercover. Check out Engadget for more information from Steve Jobs' presentation. We'll update when the ad is uploaded to the interwebs.
[Update: Apple has launched an updated iPod Touch page on its website, touting the device as "the funnest iPod ever." The page is heavily focused on gaming and has a "watch the ad" link from the gallery section ... which, as of this writing, is officially slammed.]

Reproduce Phantom Hourglass or Chains of Olympus, and then see if you can roll with the big boys.
LeadBoxx @ Sep 9th 2008 2:13PM
No doubt. Also I like to have real controls on my machine. Not some touch screen button or tilt the device to play. I'll admit its a nice feature to have games on the iPhone but it juts can't compare to the PSP for me personally.
DangerMouse @ Sep 9th 2008 2:32PM
And while you're at it, Apple, charge 40 dollars for it, too.
SoulBlade @ Sep 9th 2008 2:34PM
So true. Chains was spectacular. You need buttons for gaming - touch screen only hasn't worked yet.
samfish @ Sep 9th 2008 3:07PM
I think they could do without buttons if the screen rumbles a little when you touch it.
...not sure how you'd do it without a D-pad, though. Having a touch screen dpad or analog stick could work, but I've yet to see it implemented and still feel proper.
ill trooper @ Sep 9th 2008 4:49PM
Or look at the larger picture - how about Sony, Nintendo try to sell 160 million PSPs/DSs, or try to become the number one music distributor in any format, and then tell us again: who's really rolling 'big boy' style?
Lars @ Sep 9th 2008 8:19PM
LOL, too true. Just par for the course for Apple marketing. They like to pretend nobody has ever done what X new Apple product can do.
Joran @ Sep 10th 2008 1:40PM
@ill trooper
In worlwide sales, the GameBoy in all its iterations since the original, the GameBoy has outsold all the iterations of the iPod.
heypaul @ Sep 10th 2008 5:39PM
The difference here, ill, is that Sony and Nintendo never purported to make the world's greatest portable music player.
Megadanxzero @ Sep 9th 2008 2:13PM
How many touch-screen ONLY DS games are any good? Yeah, not many...
Mr Khan @ Sep 9th 2008 2:18PM
There was Canvas Curse, if nothing else, that was totally worth it
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 9th 2008 2:29PM
Wario Ware, Canvas Course, Touch and Go, Mario vs donkey Kong 2, Big Brain Academy, point and click adventure games, Phantom Hourglass, Meteos... FPS games (in conjuction with the dpad and shoulder button).
Strategy games are also a lot more fun and accesible to control with the stylus, specially grid based strategy games.
A touchscreen is a nice adition. But you need also buttons.
Also... Elite Beat Agents... one of the best rhytm games, and you need touchscreen to enjoy it.
Markez @ Sep 9th 2008 2:30PM
That game was indeed awesome.
I also tremendously enjoyed Warioware.
Layton ruled... Trying to think of other touchscreen only games, those are the 1st 3 that jump out at me.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 9th 2008 2:41PM
Oh I forgot Ninja Gaiden, Magical Starsign, Advance Wars, Age of Empires, Profesor Layton...
But, touchscreen should be an addition. The DS has a touchscreen and buttons.
PSP is limited to touchscreen, thats why it cant compete with the PSP and DS.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 9th 2008 2:42PM
*iPod Touch is limited...
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Sep 9th 2008 2:48PM
Fernando, we know that there are plenty of good DS games but you didn't have to destroy the guy's entire point for the sake of listing them out, hehe. :P
Squeek @ Sep 9th 2008 2:48PM
You've all forgotten Trauma Center.
That hurts. It's one of the only games on the DS I actually enjoyed.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 9th 2008 2:51PM
hehe =p
Trauma Center too... and Ouendan series.
Vcize @ Sep 9th 2008 2:54PM
Fernando, you might want to grab a dictionary and look up the definition of the word "only".
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 9th 2008 2:58PM
Those are touchscreen only games.
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:11PM
@Fernando
"Those are touchscreen only games."
Are you retarded? Do you know what touch screen only means? It means you "ONLY" use the "TOUCH SCREEN" to "PLAY" the game. Its pretty simple to understand.
No wonder you are a Nintendo fanboy....low IQ.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 9th 2008 3:19PM
Jack
Wario Ware, Canvas Course, Touch and Go, Mario vs donkey Kong 2, Big Brain Academy, point and click adventure games, Phantom Hourglass, Meteos... Elite Beat Agents, Ouendan, Profesor Layton, Ninja Gaiden, Trauma Center...
You only use the touchscreen to play those games. Without buttons.
RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Sep 9th 2008 3:21PM
Fernando, I think he was referring to the FPS comment which is touchscreen only, but also needs the dpad and shoulder buttons.
WRE @ Sep 9th 2008 3:21PM
Oh snap, Jack!!!
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:26PM
@Fernando
Scratch Ninja Gaiden off that list:
"Ryu can also block attacks by pressing any of the buttons or the directional pad"
Megadanxzero @ Sep 9th 2008 3:26PM
I would guess from 'FPS games (in conjuction with the dpad and shoulder button)' that he doesn't understand the word 'only'... However, to be fair, a lot of those games are touch-screen only and I'd simply forgotten about them (Canvas Curse for example, was brilliant). I wouldn't consider many them of them good though, and in most cases where you CAN play a game with just the touch screen (Phantom Hourglass) it's so fucking awkward, and you'd be insane to not use the buttons for equipping weapons and opening menus etc...
In any case, only having a touch screen would seriously cut down the amount of stuff you can do on it. It's unlikely to have many 'proper' games
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 9th 2008 3:26PM
RobLink
If thats the case, my mistake. But every other game I mentioned is touchscreen only.
And Jack... Talking about low IQ? I play guitar, bass, speak spanish, italian and a little english (at least I can express myself in three languages), have my own business since I was 19, and I dont need to insult people calling them retarded.
But I will make an exception: fuck you.
samfish @ Sep 9th 2008 3:37PM
Way to be an asshole (like usual), Jack.
Oh, we're SO GLAD your back.
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:38PM
Oh Fernando
I don't care what you can do.
I play guitar (have an acoustic/electricIbanez), can use 3D modeling/animation programs(3D Max, I design aircraft interiors at work using Catia V5 and Solidworks & I have a family.
This is what you said: "Those are touchscreen only games."
And you listed these games: "Ninja Gaiden, Magical Starsign, Advance Wars, Age of Empires, Profesor Layton, Wario Ware, Canvas Course, Touch and Go, Mario vs donkey Kong 2, Big Brain Academy, point and click adventure games, Phantom Hourglass, Meteos"
Alot of those games use different buttons other than the touch screen. Thats why I called you a retard. You got caught in a bullshit lie and got mad so you decided to post what you do in real life to make yourself feel better. lol
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:41PM
Samfish
Im going to call out Fernando on his bullshit. You act as if people love around here. Get over yourself.
Markez @ Sep 9th 2008 3:52PM
OOH AN IBANEZ WOW THIS GUY ROCKS!!!!! BWwWwWWwAaaaaHHAAhahahA you are an epic dbag!
Mr Khan @ Sep 9th 2008 3:57PM
I'm a high-school dropout living in my parents' basement. No job, no friends, no prospects.
I win.
Dani Reader @ Sep 9th 2008 4:04PM
Don't knock Ibanez man. The blazer they made back in '81 was a spectacular guitar. Also came from the factories that the famous 80s Squiers, seeing as Fender actually bought the factory from Ibanez due to being worried about the competition. And the musician that they made at the same kinda time for their bass range was pretty good.
Dani Reader @ Sep 9th 2008 4:09PM
I also meant to say; jack of no trades, you are a complete ass, and I'm not defending you, just guitar you 'claim' to be able to play. I play a gibson, that doesnt suddenly make me any good. Fool.
Markez @ Sep 9th 2008 4:18PM
WELL I PLAY A DIMESLIME AND I HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT MAKES ME AWESOME AND TALENTED!!! Fool XD
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Sep 9th 2008 4:25PM
Man you guys are tools lol Fernando first list all of the things he does and then I do. How do I suck at the guitar?
@Markez
Your trying too hard to upset me. lol, I love to upset you bunch of low IQ retards that love to eat Samfish droppings and suck on Fernando's clit.
J @ Sep 9th 2008 4:45PM
Well, lucky for you guys, chicks dig guys with skills.
Night Elve @ Sep 9th 2008 8:30PM
"and I dont need to insult people calling them retarded."
Are you sure Fernando? Because I'm pretty sure you've called "n00b" to the people that contradict you and that's equally offensive as calling someone "retarded".
Nothing against you man, just try to be coherent about your actions.
Tiptup300 @ Sep 10th 2008 2:20AM
Dear Jack, please say something intelligent. I have extreme difficulty reading anything you write.
John @ Sep 10th 2008 2:28AM
@Jack
Just to bring you up to speed since you've been gone a while:
Fernando is liked now.
Your are still an asshole
That is all
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Sep 10th 2008 6:02AM
I'm a game art and design student but I still fail. Why?
Because besides us gamers, nobody gives a damn.
CenturionRyan @ Sep 9th 2008 2:14PM
Yeah. Sure, Apple.
I think I'll just stick with my PSP.
Daniel @ Sep 9th 2008 2:14PM
$399? Isn't that the same price that people bitch about for a console with actual good graphics?
As far as I'm concerned, this just continues the long line of ridiculously overpriced products from Apple.
arrrgh @ Sep 9th 2008 2:44PM
said it before and i'll say it again
fuck steve jobs.
Shagittarius @ Sep 9th 2008 2:53PM
apple thrives on stupid and trendy customers.
Vcize @ Sep 9th 2008 2:56PM
Then maybe Nintendo should start getting worried Shag, they prey on the same nowadays.
baby sea tuna @ Sep 9th 2008 3:13PM
$399? What's that extra $1-200 for? Swarovski crystals? The preloaded "I am rich" app?
DanB91 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:32PM
you do realize that its $229 right?
Zachary Hinchliffe @ Sep 9th 2008 3:32PM
more like $229
chispito @ Sep 9th 2008 3:40PM
$229? On Amazon, the 8GB version is $285... and that's for a 8GB of video and audio storage.
Are you talking about an iPhone with contract or something?
