At today's Apple event (aptly titled "Let's Rock"), Steve Jobs unveiled a new ad for the revised iPod Touch, essentially showcasing the iPod Touch's (and similarly the iPhone's) gaming capabilities, claiming, "It's the best portable device for playing games." We're wagering at least a few Sony and Nintendo executives are texting each other "lolwut." As noted by Engadget, "gauntlet: THROWN."
Also shown at the Apple event: a new soccer title – Real Soccer 2009 – and Need for Speed Undercover. Check out Engadget for more information from Steve Jobs' presentation. We'll update when the ad is uploaded to the interwebs.
[Update: Apple has launched an updated iPod Touch page on its website, touting the device as "the funnest iPod ever." The page is heavily focused on gaming and has a "watch the ad" link from the gallery section ... which, as of this writing, is officially slammed.]

After the title, I think the article should only contain "lotwut!?" in 60 point font and bold.

Have you played Super Monkey Ball on these things? 'Aggravating' comes to mind.

Sorry Apple, your idiots-with-too-much-money market has dried up. They are all too busy trying to pay for their house they could never afford, even before the economy went tits up.

What, I thought not liking a company that sells shiny shit to people that don't know better, was a normal thing.

It's hardly the best portable device for gaming.
...but it is the most convenient. I can't imagine anyone would really argue with that.
That seems to be what Jobs meant, in a spinny sort of way.

The Iphone/IpodTouch really needs something like that.Maybe not exactly that, but you get the idea. Something that gives better control.
TouchScreen+Motion is just not enough for most games.

If apple made an add-on for physical input like buttons and joysticks, i'd consider it a possibility. Until then, yeah, I can see a lot of innovative games being able to be made, but most of the time-tested genres we have now won't translate well to the iPod Touch platform. I'm all for it though. I love my DS, but if Apple wanted to join the market, it'd only put more pressure on the other guys to make the next gen even better.

I haven't read all of these comments, but amongst all the furore, has anyone pointed out that 'funnest' is not a superlative that actually exists. Look it up. I think they were aiming for 'most fun', but they just look silly.
Also, is it fate that my 1st gen ipod touch (God, we're there already!) bricked today, with this announcment going on?!?!

The practical question is:
How does it handle games? Are they fun? Easy to play....or at least sort of intuitive?
I can see the iPod touch/iPhone being a cool gaming device, but...."best" seems like a stretch. A really, really big, painful, you've-got-to-be-smoking-crack-to-believe-that stretch.....

Steve Jobs is such a douchebag. Actually, Apple in general just tends to piss me off. I think Macs are awesome, I love my iPod, and can tolerate QuickTime and iTunes, but their advertising just pisses me off. This is one such example of that.

Macbook: overpriced($1100) laptop that can't play games, and I always hated the operating system style anyway
Mac Desktop: Same as above.
Ipod: About 5 min of research turns up 1000s of cheaper better alternatives
Touch: Archos is at version 5, $300 for a 4.3" touchscreen Video player and no freakin DRM.
Don't even talk to me about games. THAT should be obvious.
