SOCOM: Confrontation beta patched, actually playable

It was a rough weekend for the SOCOM faithful as server and network code issues made the game nigh-unplayable for many. Sony was well aware of the problem, promising a fix before the end of this week. Surprise: the fix arrived early this morning, and we – along with, oh, everyone who waited for the beta – were eager to see what exactly was fixed.
Turns out the answer is (at least in our experience) quite a bit. We were irked to find that our character customization data was wiped by the 1.10 patch, but them's the breaks in betaville. Rebuilding our characters wouldn't be worth it if we couldn't get into a match, though. Happily, we have found that almost all front-end network issues (login errors, general slowness, etc.) have been nipped, we can finally join games, and, when we do, gameplay seems less laggy.
It still takes quite a while to load into a match, but knowing that you'll actually be able to play once you do makes the waiting much more bearable. For those who are in the beta, let us know what your experience with 1.10 has been like in comments.

Yeah, anybody out there in the beta? Is this game any good?
DesertPyrate @ Sep 9th 2008 3:01PM
yeah the beta is pretty good it just takes WAY too long to start up, this is my first experience with SOCOM a lot of the people I play with have played before and say its not as good but I like it so far, just have to get use to the controls as I'm use to Call of Duty 4, Halo and Bad Company, only third person shooter that I really play is Gears of War, but yeah you should like it
Moffka @ Sep 9th 2008 3:20PM
It's GREAT!

I was a die-hard SOCOM fan on the PS2, and I've been waiting for this game for ages. Unfortunately, it feels like this is a rehash of those old PS2 games, just a whole lot prettier. Maybe it's because the map they chose for the beta (Crossroads) is a fav from the PS2 days, the whole thing just feels the same as before. To be honest, it made me feel like playing COD again.
I'm glad to hear that they patched all the out-of-game issues, but a progress bar during the game load (a la COD) would be really helpful to player so they can figure out if the game is ever going to start, or if they need to just reset their system.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 9th 2008 4:19PM
There are beta-related issues, but the gameplay is pure SOCOM, and I love it. It's a definite purchase for me next month.

"Unfortunately, it feels like this is a rehash of those old PS2 games, just a whole lot prettier."
I believe their intent with Confrontation was to recreate all the best aspects of the PS2 games in HD for the PS3.
shaun001 @ Sep 10th 2008 9:12AM

It's like online gaming is something that's never been done before.
atrimus @ Sep 9th 2008 3:00PM
so, how exactly do you get in on this beta? (one of these days i'll actually do more than just update my firmware, and download demos and themes with the online components of my PS360).
brickwalker0 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:49PM
you have to preorder it or buy Qore.
i work for gamestop on the side and we have tons of beta keys (you can have 2 friends join you with one key too). luckily i hate Gamestop and would love nothing more than to give their stuff away.
email me at my spam box at lawke@comcast.net and ill try to hook you up.
brickwalker0 @ Sep 9th 2008 5:03PM
alright, ive run out keys, i was able to give out about 10, sorry to those that didnt get any :(
but stealing from Gamestop feels...good...
like justice...

I tried getting on this morning but it failed..Anyone can confirm its working a lot better after the patch?
CW @ Sep 9th 2008 3:58PM
I dont think it's much better. It's still 50/50 whether or not your loading screen takes forever or eventually craps out. Loads still take a very long time, and I've been in at least two matches so far where they were incredibly laggy.
I think this update was just to fix some of the easy problems they found.
They still havent taken the ingame notice acknowledging the problems.
RC @ Sep 9th 2008 3:09PM
I've been able to get into quiet a few games and yes it is a very good game.

Anyone that is in the beta is encouraged to share their impressions at the official GoingSony MySpace Group:

Please share, thank you! :)
bassman730 @ Sep 9th 2008 3:26PM
Others I've talked to said this patch made it much better but I haven't noticed a difference.
For those wondering how it plays, I really can't describe it correctly besides saying it's classic SOCOM. I've been playing SOCOM games since the second one which was arguably the best, and Confrontation seems to bring the series back to its roots which I'm happy about.
Kritsof @ Sep 9th 2008 3:51PM
Socom 1 and 2 were still the best for online. Socom 1 for the purity of it and Socom 2 for the refinement.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 9th 2008 4:18PM
Why are you saying Sony was aware of this problem and promised a fix? This is a dev issue. The devs promised the fix. You might as well say Sony is responsible for the upcoming Battlefield patch as well.
sweet jones @ Sep 9th 2008 4:31PM
i think the game is pretty bad ass, i have been playing since i got the key, first couple days it was pretty bad, but the patch has helped signicantly , although i do think the whole leaning the controller to the side to peak around corners is a little odd, but still cool. Love the fact that u can stab someone with a quick knife swipe, if anyone needs a code, i still have have one available only used it twice for me & a friend. still has one chance left to be used, hit me up, no babies need reply. i mean you little kids....
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 4:45PM
I'll take that code
majjestic @ Sep 26th 2008 6:47PM
yo sweet can i have that beta code : \. If anyone has one left ill hook them up with a brazzers.com password. email me at cjgotbd@hotmail.com if interested.

It's a lot better. The real problem is getting the host of the room to actually start the fucking game.
Kristof @ Sep 9th 2008 4:56PM
This was a problem in SOCOM 1 where a room would just die if the host physically left the game while logged in (fell asleep or had dinner or something stupid) ... SOCOM 2 had it where if enough people were ready, it would start.
youhavemail @ Sep 9th 2008 5:35PM
lol socom.
the cheap mans ghost recon which is the cheap mans cod
im kidding..
but really..
Albanian_Killa @ Sep 9th 2008 6:05PM
I love this beta. It's pure SOCOM. I've been a SOCOMer all my life and I love this. The tactics in SOCOM are like none other. This is a game of patience and strategy.
And here's a tip for dealing with the loading times: Watch TV while they happen. You can just feel your SIXAXIS vibrate, or listen to people talk on the headset so you know the game has started, or go back and forth through channels. Watching TV makes things seem a lot easier though.
lawlersauce @ Sep 9th 2008 9:20PM
My SIXAXIS must be broken then...
:rollseyes
GameSage @ Sep 9th 2008 9:57PM
Disagree with the author. Before the patch I could at least get in a room and play(Granted only after waiting 5min. and with multiple attempts). Now when I get in a game the screen freezes on a dead player and I have to restart my PS3 and try again. Although finding a playable match is a diamond in the rough the SOCOM experience is worth the wait.
Christian @ Sep 9th 2008 6:59PM
So far this beta has thought me one thing. I suck badly at SOCOM, the amount of times I end up being shot without even damaging anyone else is tragic. Guess I need to start mixing in some Warhawk play as I am getting a little tired of getting my ass whipped :)
HB96st @ Sep 9th 2008 8:32PM
Oh, so sony or whoever just took socom and splashed on some much needed paint??
If I didnt see the soldier with the rifle, I would have thought ya'll was talking about Madden.
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Sep 10th 2008 12:32AM
Please go back to your bong.
Try actually playing the game before railing on it. It's not the best game in the world but it is far from a simple rehash. I admit the games has some beta related issues but it is beautiful, customizable, fun and with some tweaking has good controls.
JAH75157 @ Sep 9th 2008 11:23PM
more like slowcom
