Admittedly, it's old hat by now, but PS3 owners should expect to wait through an install when BioShock makes its debut October 21. Eurogamer reports that the 4.98GB install will take approximately 10 minutes before players are allowed to enter Rapture. To pass the time, the install has Rapture-related advertisements and music (provided you don't wander off to make a sandwich).
PS3 owners will have their patience rewarded with the "survivor mode" difficulty in the game, along with the eventual release of some "exclusive" puzzle stages.

Well, 360 owners should get used to it as well. I welcome being able to install entire games on my hard drive. It'll be especially important when FFXIII comes as I hope they'll let us install it instead of having to swap 5 different disks back and forth.
If the community makes too much of a stink about it, us 360 owners are going to be the ones who suffer because we'll miss out on Rage, Metal Gear Solid, and other games that exceed the dvd storage limits.

No we'll be installing 10 minute installs every 2 hours like Metal Gear. And on every replay a few mins.....changing discs which takes five seconds does not seem that bad with all this installing

The only problem is that they demand you have the disc in still for security reasons.

lost odyssey is already 4 discs on 360.
infinite undiscovery is a 2 disc 360 game.
gamers do not mind playing games with more discs.
it actually makes you think you are getting that much more gaming.
u realize there is usually 10 hours or more of gaming per disc... so where do u figure swapping discs all the time??
ff7 is one of the most popular RPG games of all time and was on 4 discs for playstation.

What happens when you have a 20GB PS3 and already installed a bunch of games.
If your hard drive is full, will it simply refuse to play the game at all?

I'm guessing, yes.
It'll probably try to install, realise it can't install, abort the install, and then tell you to go fuck yourself. (Games can be rude, can't they?)
If you can spare the money, I'd recommend upgrading your hard drive. 20GB was fine when the PS3 was first released, but it's far too small now days.
You can pick up some pretty big hard drives for relatively little money.
If you're not sure how to go about the hard drive replacement, google it. There's plenty of tutorials online. I haven't done it myself (60GB has been more than enough for me so far) but it looks easy enough.

@Hyams
Yeah, it's extremely easy. It did this just a couple of weeks ago. My 60 still had at least half its space available, but I anticipate purchasing the dl version of Burnout Paradise and am hoping they offer more games that way in the future.
Anyway, you just need an external drive with enough space to hold the data currently on your PS3. Connect it, run the backup utility, remove old drive, put in new one, start of up PS3 and run the restore data utility. That's basically it.

While I think console installs suck, I also don't think its a big deal for anyone except the people stuck with 20 Gb drives. Even then, its pretty cheap to replace the HDD so I still don't think its a big deal. With an 80 Gb model I don't see myself having issues, but I'm probably a rarity in that I delete install data for games I'm not currently playing.
I'm hoping that installs will get smaller as time goes on, however. As devs learn how to use Blu-Ray efficiently, hopefully they'll be able to stream data from disc more often. As others have pointed out, Uncharted manages to do this, so hopefully other devs will figure it out.
But yeah, installs on consoles suck.

I have a 320 gig harddrive in my PS3 im not at all worried about installs, plus the decreased load times is always a welcome thing in my opinion.

he must be talking about a normal HDD for computers that is readily available and at a good affordable price.
a good 2.5 HDD drive for laptops that fits in the ps3 machine is less available in large sizes and much more expensive..
(some people have spent as much or more on their HDD for thier ps3, than the actual console)
which is just plain dumb to me. 500gb HDD drives for laptops are not cheap.

Silly internets. Why do you assume we all make sandwiches? Perhaps a ramen, cup noodles, hungry man, night hawk, totinos party pizza, or bagel bites are in order for us gamers who choose not to stack various edibles in between bread to try and eat while gaming. I hate trying to keep a sandwich together while im playing a game, much less eat HEALTHY.
Oh, and ummm, blah blah humbug install time etc. and so forth. Optional install FTW5000 Max.

eh. i hate the PS3 installs as much as the next guy but at least it does seem like they are getting a bit faster now.
the installs still seems like an eternity though when i get a game that ive been waiting for for ump-teen months already. i usually just use that time to flip through the manual or browse Joystiq for any post that came up while i was out.
the installs that annoy me the most though are the ones that come after demos and PSN games. i mean, why cant the game just install itself when it finishes downloading? good thing i have a PSP cause i just use remote play to install and download stuff while im elsewhere in the house. at least i dont have to be tied to console.

I usually have a few games on the go at once, I like popping out of one a leaving it for a day or two while I play another. Considering the titles I'd probably buy, a 1/3 of the drive would have to be in use.

whenever there's a comment that side with people who dont care about install time.. it gets a negative rating.. hahahah ...
personally i can careless how long it takes to install.. in the end of the 10 min. i'm playing the game .. why is it such a big deal

Hmmm...If games are truly needing 50 gig discs, why are the installs all smaller than a DVD? 4-5 gigs.
What was the install size for MGS4?

mgs4 was probably 9gb of gameplay
and 40 gb of movie mode.
i got 14 - 18 hours out of 1 play through and i feel like no more than 8 hours was gameplay, similar to a cod4 campaign.
the installs sped up the load times between scenes.
mgs4 had many load screens and even with the installs they took a few seconds.

they have added more cut scenes to the ps3 version that were very absent from the 360 version.1
HD cut scenes + the addded audio will add alot of space to the ps3 version.
i feel if the 360 version was pushing the 9gb limit that the ps3 will def be over 10gb of data, making the blu ray or second disc mandatory.
it feels like a lot of cut scenes and things were kept out of the 360 version.
