Anybody who thought that the PSN-friendly nature of LittleBigPlanet meant the game could be offered as a downloadable title will probably dash that dream when they find out the game takes up 40GB. In an interview with GI.biz, developer Alex Evans explains the game will be "filling up" the Blu-ray disc.
Evans explains there's a lot of tutorial content in LittleBigPlanet, narrated by Stephen Fry for English audiences. As we've learned in the past from Heavenly Sword and Ratchet, it's the (uncompressed and/or multi-region) audio that takes up a significant amount of space on the Blu-ray. Evans expresses that thanks to the Blu-ray, file size hasn't been a concern. This loose attitude to size for the disc's contents will not be applied to the player-designed content, however, which Evans says is "relatively compact."

We've been through this before, they put the game on the disk multiple times so that the slow blu-ray drives can read the game faster.

Probably not the case here. Fully uncompressed audio is a massive resource hog but plays linearly, so repeats aren't necessary when the actual game is likely small. Of course, why put some dude talking into an uncompressed format is beyond me.

I agree with Laughing Target.
Especially since you could compress it all and reburn it three-four times in order to optimize Blu Ray.

A full disc means a mandatory install.

Again, more non-news. The fact that Sony CAN refuse to compress doesn't mean they should get a pat on the back for neglecting to doing so. This is clearly an attempt at justifying Blu-ray for games.
Look at it this way: why is the audio so important to this game? My not compress it and give us more content to build with? Because Sony has to get bloggers stirred up on how they got LBP to miraculously fill up a Blu-ray.
This is criminally manipulative...

if the go! team track is still on there, then yes, the music is that important

Sony may also be doing this as an anti-piracy tactic. If you have a pseudo-slow connection, a 40gb download may be unappealing enough to get you to just buy the game (or not).

Things I learned today.
People who will vote you down when you talk trash about little big planet.
People will vote you up if you have something clever or downright cute to say about little big planet.

That's because anything bad people say about it always falls in line with "DURR LBP is stupid and overrated"

how in the fuck does a platformer take up 40 gigs?
I have every harry potter audio book narrated by stephen fry, and they don't take up 40 gigs, so don't tell me it's narration. heheh.

I didn't even know HP was narrated by anyone other than Jim Dale. I shall have to listen to the Stephen Fry version and decide which one I like better.

It's not JUST the tutorial narration and videos that's taking up all that room.
After all, they also say:
"So we have a huge library of thousands of different objects, and they're not just textures - we worry about the bump-mapping and the specular... all the HD, next-gen stuff happens and it's sitting there on the Blu-ray for you to use without having to worry about it. And that's really how we're using the space up."

heh heh. You think people actually read the original article?
Of course not! The nice ity bity out of context chunks are what most people seem to read here.
He makes an interesting (and diplomatic) point when asked if it could be done on the Xbox 360. In fact I'm surprised Joystiq didn't run a sensational "LBP couldn't be done on the Xbox 360" article. Maybe they didn't read the interview either :)

I think a lot of people here actually read the linked articles. I say this because there seems to have been a distinct lack on completely outrageous statements recently.
Although, it could also be that people just learned to stop making completely outrageous statements.

Too bad you have to get it OFF the Blu-ray before it's useful.
What about load times? Will they just make a 5GB install and be done with it? If so, what difference does it make how big the Blu-ray disc is if you're copying stuff to the [smaller than a Blu-ray] hard drive?

Compressing audio is not a big deal.. I'm sure the devs are bright enough to figure out that if it had any potential benefit they'd have done it.

You don't understand developers very well, do you?
Ever see a database abstraction layer that was 2MB or a template engine that was 5MB? Developers don't care unless they feel they have to, and they gravitate towards features they don't need rather than the tool that just gets the job done -- just like home users.
Hey, let's not include a built-in syntax parser in our web browser. That's an incredibly useful feature for developers, but it's BLOAT! But, we won't use separate processes for each window, because having all your web apps crash at once like an old copy of MacOS is MUCH better than seeing a small hit in performance!
Just because someone is a professional developer doesn't mean they always have good priorities (and I'm not specifically targeting the LBP people, here).

Well I should hope that I do understand developers pretty well.. or else I need to see a therapist about my self-disconnect issues.
I get what you are saying but I'm pretty sure you are speaking from experience outside the realm of video game development given your examples.
That isn't to say we're immune to laziness but our priorities tend to be a bit different.
I find a lot of web and app developers tend to assume stability is just supposed to happen.. or in some cases fool themselves into thinking the issue is somehow the fault of the platform and needs to be addressed by someone else entirely.
Contrary to what one might assume with the works of EA's stable and the like floating around out there.. stability, performance, tightening all the nuts and bolts, is a very important process for us.
But hey.. if I'm missing something please tell me.
It really doesn't take much to sort out compression of assets unless we're trying to reinvent the compression wheel so if you can tell me why PS3 titles need it so badly I'd appreciate the heads up.

You can make an audio file a tenth of the size and decompressing it really is piss. Why wouldn't you do it? Give the drive a rest.

Is this uncompressed data, or lossless compressed data?
In my Amiga days, games that used compression loaded faster because the CPU was faster than the disk drive. The same is still true today with optical drives, even with a crappy CPU.
The only argument in favor against lossless compression is when you must guarantee that the compressed data set must always be the same size. That's only important for embedded devices.
Why should people care? Well, load times, latency, and install size are always an issue with software.
