That's a bad Microsoft...then again, it's not like Ensemble will have a problem finding a new publisher.

Most employees are being terminated, the company is shutting down, and critical personnel are being contracted to a separate Microsoft studio.

I think Ensemble will have a problem finding a new publisher at this point.

Wait, so 20 million plus sales for the Age of Empires series wasn't a good enough ROI for MS? Weird.

P.S. I haven't actually been working all those late nights. I've been fucking Valve on the side for the last ten months.

The letter reads more like:

Dear Ensemble,

You were nice and fun for a while, but now I am getting my cock sucked up by *insert list of games from other studios to be released soon* and I realized it's not you, it's me.

Oh and BTW, I'm keeping the dog, TV, friends and magazines, you can keep the pictures, don't want to be reminded of you.

XOXOXO

First Sierra now it's Ensamble?

I fail to understand how companies like EA,Activision, Microsoft, and Sega can't just condense teams into one building but let them keep their name.

Rare has put out 6 original games this gen (DS included) compared to how many Ensemble games? It does make business sense - and specializing in RTS versus the multi-genre approach of Rare is quite limiting... bottom line - your Rare dig was not very well thought out...

They aren't comparing how many games each company has put, they are comparing how well they have done financially. Ensemble has had some good successes, cant remember anything successful Rare has put out recently.

Ensemble made lot of money for MS, on the PC. But it's obvious now that MS don't give two shits about PC gaming. I hope Apple will get their act together and give them some competition in computer gaming space. Just like Mozilla forced them to update mess that is Internet Explorer.

Looks like Microsoft may be looking to get out of the videogame business. They have virtually no first party development left. Maybe they think buying a few 3rd party exclusive DLC packages is enough.

I think MS will take more the approach of publisher. They had great success as a publisher with Gears, Mass Effect, and several other games. With their 1st party dev houses, they have had very little success. Couple that with the fact that 1st party exclusives are becoming a thing of the past and this makes pretty good sense.

Rare is kept around to provide niche games that MS thinks will eventually get casuals into their box. Rare games are a strategic investment for MS whereas publishing blockbuster games is where they look to make dollars now.

They still own IP and can create new IP, they just basically have to hire estabilished development teams to put their games together.

So this game they made is going to see zero support and be devoid of DLC, or was that only for Shadowrun after they closed FASA studios?

They're closing them now when the last full game they've made was Age of Empires III which came out in 2005. How are they gauging the Return on investment then?
