Microsoft: Xbox 360 sales double following price drop

The recent Xbox 360 price cut doubled sales of the console last weekend, according to Microsoft. The company tells Bloomberg that some consoles sold "six times" the previous weekend's rate ... of course, Microsoft didn't actually give any hard sales numbers.

For actual sales data since the price cut, it appears we'll have to wait another month for the NPD data -- unless Microsoft just comes out with it. The August NPD data (which should release very soon) won't reflect the alleged jump in sales.

If 360 sales have doubled in America, this is what we're looking at:

In America alone, Wii sales will still be above the 360, which will be above the PS3's.

Worldwide: Wii will slaughter everyone as usual, and the PS3 and 360 will be fighting for second place. It could go either way, really.

Who wins second place world wide for the week all comes down to whether or not the 360's price cut will give it a big enough boost over the PS3's NA sales to contend with the gap in sales in the rest of the world, where the PS3 is comfortably killing the 360.

Despite launching over a year later, there are now actually more PS3s here than 360s. And that's with the 360 costing less than a Wii.

The 360 is struggling in all markets BUT America.

Oh Hyams, your dedication is laughable.

First of all, the difference this chart shows is probably around 20,000 units. A negligible amount, especially considering that different companies (ie: Sony) report shipped units, and not sold units. Either way, this graph certainly doesn't show anyone getting "raped." Unless you consider how well Nintendo is doing.

Secondly, why put an emphasis on a 14 month lead? The Xbox brand was undeniably weaker than the PlayStation brand for the last generation. I think that for where the two brands were a few years ago, the Xbox brand has grew at an amazing rate, and it is certainly leagues beyond what it should have been.

But that's all ignoring that VGChartz is a completely unreliable source of true, factual information. The BBC, not so much, but your claims of the Xbox being "raped" in Europe are grossly exaggerated, no matter how you spin it.

Dude, you're missing the point:

For the PS3 to have been able to catch up and over-take the 360 despite it's 14 month lead it must obviously be out-selling it by a considerable ammount each *week*.

I mean, we're talking about whether or not the 360 will outsell the PS3 worldwide this *week* aren't we?

If we were discussing which had sold the most, I would agree, the difference is tiny, but we're not. We're talking about a *weekly* basis, and whether or not in the *week* of the 360's price-cut it will sell more consoles than the PS3, worldwide, for that *week*.

It's still the best console on the market. The price cut should help a lot. Had they done this six months ago the ps3 never would have gotten the jump on them.

I hope this price drop sells ALOT of 360's, that way...Sony will have to lower the SP3's price THIS year.

Your quote stings. Since my 360 locks up due to overheating after 60 mins of playing Viva Pinata 2. My PS3 is in the same rack and has no difficulties.

I will probably be able to get around this by altering my temperature-controlled cabinet, but just knowing I have to do so AGAIN and that I built it for 360 in teh first place since it's too loud to sit out and too hot to put behind glass reminds me that this is most definitely not the best console on the market today.

My 360 never freezes during Viva 2 and my wife has already played it for 4 hours straight once. If yours is defective, send it in. They gotcha covered unless you voided the warranty somehow.

It's two years old and the three year warranty only covers the RRoD. It isn't RRoDing (in fact it cannot, MS removed that from the firmware), just locking up.

You put the thing in a cabinet, where it can't breathe, and then complain about it overheating. Your PS3 may not freeze up, but keeping it inside a cabinet will shorten its lifespan (as it would with any electronics that use a CPU and require a cool atmosphere to run properly).

And when did they take out the RRoD from the firmware? I've never heard that one before. Maybe Joystiq reported it and I missed it, but have any source for this?

LS2, just call them up and tell them that after a few hours of playtime it crashes, then when you try and start it back up "it has these 3 red lights around the power button".

I've done it twice already when I got the video-out problem and got new consoles each time without a problem by saying it was rrod.

I did not say it cannot breathe. It's a special temperature-controlled cabinet with fans that I made for it. It has constant temperature monitoring, it has never exceeded 102F in there (it never exceeded 100F until a couple weeks ago when it was over 100F outside!).

If there's one constant with 360 fanbois, it's that they'll blame customers for the faults of the consoles. MS doesn't do so, they wrote down $1B over this. Why do you feel you have to defend the console more than MS does?

The only thing MS has to do now to guarantee success this holiday season is

1) Promote the heck out of big games coming up.
2) Make the prices of their hard drives come down tot a reasonable level on par with the current price of their consoles.

I see no reason why the 360 can't sell on the same level or near the same level as the Wii. Both systems are great in my opinion and each deserve consideration...

The 360 has a great online service (that will be free eventually) great software, and an easy to develop for hardware.

The Wii is great at duping people into RE-buying the GameCube for more than TWICE the cost.

Remember kiddies, I have said for almost 2 years that the Wii bubble will burst in 2 years. For the sake of gaming as I know it...I hope I'm right.

Who really cares how long the Wii "fad" will last? I would just like to know when we will actually get games that I want to play on the system.

I think the fad has already ended with the majority of the core gamers. It's the target demographic of the Wii that will keep it selling out for another 2 years.

The funny thing is the Wii is not some awful system. It is simply the lackluster software, lack of storage, antiquated online infrastructure and the child like undertone of the console in general.

Let's not argue here about why the Wii sucks. All of us know why the Wii has a very bad reputation. Likewise, we also know why the PS3 had a bad reputation at first. In the end it is all about the games. If the games are there people will overlook some of the other things I mentioned.

I happen to agree with killjebus that the Wii is a fad. However, it is looking like a fad that still has people enamored with the console.

At this point I don't doubt that the Wii will continue to sell like gangbusters but the software releases are just so few and far between that it makes the system absolete.

First off I am not just a hter like you would imply. You are the hater and that is the PS3. i actually have a Wii (you know because you added me as a friend and i sent you that Wii Ware points card after our GTA IV bet).

I am not some blind hater like you are when it comes to the PS3. Also, I expect you to be hyped for pretty much every Wii games because you always are regardless of how bad it really is. Thats OK with me.

All I said was the Wii will continue to be despised by the majority of core gamers because of a lack of compelling software. The same was true for the PS3 for a while. However, like yourself with the wii I always like the PS3 games from the start. Because it's the system i use the most and the only one on a daily basis. I never even turn my Wii on.

Just because someone disagrees with you it does not make them a hater. I have said that Wario Shake is one of most anticipated games for this month and my only anticipated Wii game all years other than World Of Goo.

If you like all the stuff on the Wii- good for you. But, so not act as if the entire planet has to feel the same way. You really have a love me or hate me approach to your life. Don't live with absolutes.

Wow, guys...the way you guys vote up/down anti-nintendo remarks are quite interesting and downright childish. I thought a well played out arguement will be voted purely on the merit of a well-thought out arguement. Not who hates Nintendo more.

I am no fanboy, and never have been. I have a wii and an Xbox360. And if i could afford it, I would get a PS3. Infact, I play my Xbox a lot more than the wii but i can assure you that I can see its worth and know that it was worth my time to purchase.

I agreed with Sony's move with the PS1 when it came out, since Nintendo was becoming quite arrogant with their monopoly of the market. But their market strategy failed nad their system did not cater to the needs of gamers this generation around. I like that Micosoft entered the market and the 360 has provided us with exceptional games over these past few years. Nintendo bombed the past two generations in terms of catering to gamers (not that they have improved much) but they have given us something new to work with.

All gamers should be happy with all these approaches. It only cements our place as gamers and provides us with better, improved games to play with. I am happy with all three systems, and if one fails, it will only be a reminder that they should endeavour to try harder the next time around. Guess what? We win...
