Despite appearances of similarities, Warhammer Online and World of Warcraft are very different games. Looking at screenshots and videos will only tell you so much, because it's under the hood where you'll find the differences. That's where this handy guide comes into play. It's here to explain why certain quests in WAR are considered "public" and what "instances" are really all about. Unlike our previous guide, this is for the total MMO newb.
The MMO genre has been slow to evolve. A primary reason being that games take a long time to come to market. So what's so special about these two games that you'd actually want to know the differences between them? Click on through to find out.

A war of greasy basement dwelling nerds. What an interesting war it would be.

I think Warhammer will be the game to get close to WoW's subscribers. I'm playing the OB and Warhammer is a lot of fun, I very much prefer it over WoW in every aspect. I hope WoW bows down...

Warhammer online is based off of Games Workshop properties, which Blizzard has ripped off for years and has never gotten any flak for. Thats the difference to me.

From playing both, beta and wow live, WoWs PVP is more gear oriented, than really skill. PVP in War has to do with you knowing your character and really out thinking the other guy, that is why the pace is slower. You are basically waiting for the other guy to mess up to deliver the killing blow. For example if you take on a warrior priest you have to have some way to counter the healing. If you don't know this, the battle is lost but the pace of the fight gives you a chance to anticipate moves and counter each other.
Wow not so much, the battles are fast and furious and many times fun if you are both geared, but if you are not forget it,you are steam rolled. And I don't me geared as in both purples, you better be in the same type of pvp gear as the next person. Also wow is big on counter classes, and rock paper scissors. So no matter how good your are x class won't take down y class cause developers have designed it that way.

I'm interested in the Warhammer setting because it's awesome and speaks to the tabletop nerd in me, and WoW's PvP eventually became the only thing worth doing after the gear grind made the game completely unbearable. This is a natural choice for me, the only catch being that it's from Mythic, who have proven that they can drop the ball pretty hard.

What's the difference?
Don't say another Goddamned word. Up until now, I've been polite. If you say anything else -- word one -- I will kill myself. And when my tainted spirit finds its destination, I will topple the master of that dark place.
From my black throne, I will lash together a machine of bone and blood, and fueled by my hatred for you, this fear engine will bore a hole between this world and that one. When it begins, you will hear the sound of children screaming -- as though from a great distance. A smoking orb of nothing will grow above your bed, and from it will emerge a thousand starving crows.
As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch only a glimpse of my radiance before you are incinerated. Then, as tears of bubbling pitch stream down my face, my dark work will begin. I will open one of my six mouths and I will sing the song that ends the Earth.

I've been playing the beta and, where to start? Only good things: the graphics are great, especially if you have the hardware to force 4x aa. The scenario RvR happens any time, and you can get major EXP and Renown points if you win. Regular map RvR happens more in raids because of defenses, but because leveling is easy with Scenario RvR you will know exactly what to do when you get there. There are incentives for public quests besides loot. All of the classes are well balanced, and strategy does make a difference (3 Black Orcs attacking a higher level White Lion with a couple of Bright Wizards casting damage over area spells = some dead greenskins) Core training and renown training merchants are clearly marked and are everwhere.
There are still some bugs with NPCs becoming non attackable, but recent patches has greatly reduced that.
When the final servers go live, WAR is on.

Hmm, I'm enjoying the game but am very disappointed in the graphics - even with my videocard forcing 16xQ AA.
I hope that they have more graphical tweaks waiting for release, because things don't look like they've changed much since 2005.
Gameplay-wise, it's a blast so far.
