Joystiq hands-on: WipEout HD race-ready at last

All the pre-race checks have been completed, the airfoils trimmed, and the antigrav systems brought online for WipEout's debut on PS3. Following up on our recent PAX '08 hands-on, Sony invited us for one final go at the game before it hits the PlayStation Store for $19.99 "within the next few weeks."
Having already made certain you know just how jaw-droppingly gorgeous it is in action, we really wanted to focus this playtest on the gameplay nuances and taking an under-the-hood look at the most interesting bits and bobs of the completed game. So, strap in and continue reading after the break.

No matter how good the game looks – and, again, it's stunning – the 1080p, 60fps visuals (which we seem to recall hearing could never be done when PS3 was announced) can only carry it so far. It has to control well ... not only to be fun, but to live up to its pedigree. Thankfully, while this racer is challenging even in its introductory Venom class races, it drives (if that's even the right term) like a dream.
For those who find themselves smacking into the sides of the track more often than they'd like, there's a "training wheels" option of sorts in Pilot Assist. Turning this on (it can be done in-race or from the options menu) makes it impossible to hit or even graze the course boundaries – you're simply nudged away from them like a strong magnetic field is at work.
"We spent about three hours playing and only scratched the surface of the campaign mode." |
It wasn't awful – as we've found in many implementations – but we definitely enjoyed the game more using a good old fashioned analog stick. Given that the series now features barrel rolls (which give you a brief boost when landing, at the expense of some ship energy) control precision really is paramount.
We took the game through campaign, race box (single race), and online modes, the latter being devoid of any noticeable lag, even with competitors slamming into (or being obliterated around) us. We found that holding L1 opens the voice chat channel in online races, although we were sadly sans headsets.
Overall, we spent about three hours playing and only scratched the surface of the campaign mode, which gave us confidence that the game's downloadable nature doesn't speak to its longevity in the least.
"WipEout HD is part of a new breed of PSN titles that look, sound, and feel like large-budget retail releases." |
The photo mode was so-so; the game lacks the ability to view and save replays, so it's limited to whatever you can see on-screen when you hit pause. There are some depth of field and motion blur effects to play with, and it's nice that your photos are saved to the HDD for sharing.
All told, the game features eight tracks (six from WipEout Pure and two from WipEout Pulse) – 16 if you count the reverse variants of each. The final team roster is set at 12, and their unique ships, like the tracks themselves, are unlocked for use in single and online races by achieving set point levels in the campaign.
Along with Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty, WipeEout HD is part of a new breed of PSN titles that look, sound, and feel like large-budget retail releases. As for when we'll be able to fire the game up at home, Sony was still tight lipped on an exact date, but we were told to expect that detail to be firmed up within the next few days.

And let the deluge of PS3 exclusives begin!
Cellien @ Sep 12th 2008 1:18PM
I have a PS3 and this will be the first game I will have purchased. Well, this or LBP, which ever comes first.
Yousty @ Sep 12th 2008 1:53PM
Same here. I've had my PS3 since last December and I have yet to play a game on it. I always get the 360 version of a game because of XBL. Wipeout HD and LBP are the first two exclusives that I've actually cared about.
The PS3 has been a great blu-ray player for these last 9 months though :-)
Miguel @ Sep 12th 2008 11:19AM
I wonder if it uses the motion controls and does it use them well.
Miguel @ Sep 12th 2008 11:20AM
nevermind, im an idiot and didnt read carefully.
domgbrown @ Sep 12th 2008 11:33AM
It will be interesting to see how much this costs and how many units it moves because it seems like it could sell well as a retail disc release. If it will have a high price point, I think it would do better as physical media as some people would have a hard time paying $50 for non physical media.
Hyams @ Sep 12th 2008 11:36AM
It's £12.

Sucks that they had to tone down the Zone mode, probably for it failing that epilepsy test thing, but I'm still really looking forward to getting this, hopefully those PSN cards get here sooner than later.
SuperGayParade @ Sep 12th 2008 11:45AM
the key to mastering this game is learning the SIXAXIS controls since you can do pitch easier
easy for me since I've done motion control on any game that offers it. Evolve or die !
Dirty @ Sep 12th 2008 11:59AM
More often than not the genetic mutation dies off. Only once in a great while a mutation comes along that benefits enough to cause an evolutionary step.
deaftly @ Sep 12th 2008 11:46AM
So basically its a psp port. I'll still buy it anyway. wallet = :(
Metal_Gear @ Sep 12th 2008 11:55AM
Yep, a 1080p, 60fps 5.1 surround sound PSP port. That PSP is a monster.
Dirty @ Sep 12th 2008 11:59AM
Well they could have made all new tracks. It will be very HD though.
Ty @ Sep 12th 2008 12:12PM
This is why I should never the beautiful, luscious green grounds of the continent of PS3Fanboy.com Such a sensible locale. No one slanders GOOD things there. PS3s are available at every location and everyone is happy. PS3 Utopia is its nickname.
People like you reside beyond it. PORTS have no upgrade. They often have downgrades. This is not a port. This is a PS3 WipEout game using the PSP titles as a gameplay and structure base. The gameplay will be slightly tweaked but everything else will be brand spanking new visually. Yet represent the same things the PSP represented so well.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 12th 2008 12:06PM
They will have DLC in the future, at least thats the impression I am getting from all the 'Initial release' phrasing being thrown around.
SHAZAM! @ Sep 12th 2008 12:07PM
@Metal_Gear
Just changing the graphics doesn't make it a new game, it is a port. A lot of game do go through graphical upgrades if they get ported, due to the nature of having extra dev time, that is of course if they're on an equivalent system to.
My point is, the content hasn't changed. The tracks and teams are, as it sounds, from Pure and Pulse, meaning we've seen it before. That's not bad, and it's not REALLY a port of a specific game, but I think this ultimately counts as one.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 12th 2008 12:31PM
That's okay with me, actually. I really like the PSP race tracks and they look great re-engineered in HD.
Nice thing about this method is they now have a beautiful, working engine set up on PS3, they just have to design some new tracks now and can sell it either as DLC or a brand new standalone Wipeout sequel.
required @ Sep 12th 2008 1:02PM
Both PSP WipEout titles are insanely great games and both have a lot of tracks. Pure alone had a bunch of free downloadable expansion packs which included more tracks more music more teams more skins so on and so forth. The fact that they now have a PS3 engine that can leverage all of this stuff in new ways is awesome as is the frame size and frame rate. Excited.
Averna @ Sep 12th 2008 10:02PM
They will be releasing track packs at a later date... I thought, anyway.
j.howlett @ Sep 12th 2008 11:53AM
i never bought a wipeout game because i wasn't that goog on the demos but i did play the demos over and over for hours and that led to renting the game. still wasn't that great a player but it was fun.

Ahhh memories! Wipeout is one of the best combat/racers I have ever played.
FOXHOUND @ Sep 12th 2008 12:16PM
THIS IS QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST NEWS I'VE HEARD ALL DAY.
Seriously. Can't wait for this to be released. :d
jeff @ Sep 12th 2008 12:20PM
It's too bad that the old PS1 Namco NegCon twisting controller was never re-engineered for the Ps3. It was by far the best controller for WipeOut or just about any driving game.
Marty @ Sep 12th 2008 12:28PM
Aside from the resolution, what makes these graphics any better than a game like F-Zero GX?
Vidikron (FU) @ Sep 12th 2008 12:44PM
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say more polys, better lighting, better textures.... pretty much every graphical aspect.
Kodros @ Sep 12th 2008 12:58PM
Are you kidding me?
required @ Sep 12th 2008 1:04PM
I'll keep it simple and note the creative direction.
Nugent @ Sep 12th 2008 1:06PM
That's like asking why the graphics of Half-Life 2 are any better than the graphics of Half-Life 1, aside from resolution and some extra polygons. Newer games in a given genre are always going to look like prior games in that same genre, except for better resolution, framerate, and/or polygon count. The game is called "Wipeout HD." The whole reason for this game's existence is basically to port a non-HD game into HD.
That said, I think this impact game is really underrated. There are a lot of fans of Wipeout, and this game could sell systems since its exclusive, if Sony does the proper marketing. Which they probably won't.
Invisible Robot Meat @ Sep 12th 2008 1:36PM
Other than the lower IQ, what makes marty any dumber than say, a rock?
Deeznuts420 @ Sep 12th 2008 3:47PM
A rock doesnt talk.
Marty @ Sep 12th 2008 6:04PM
Come on guys, I wasn't trying to say the game has terrible graphics - I just looked at the screenshots and they look similar to other games I've seen.
There's no need to go on the defensive, make personal insults against me, and act like I'm shitting on you or your video game console.
Man, there are some assholes on this website. Sheesh.
Invisible Robot Meat @ Sep 12th 2008 7:21PM
Uh-oh, Marty got a boo boo on his feelings.
"There's no need to go on the defensive, make personal insults against me, and act like I'm shitting on you or your video game console."
But most every comment you make about anything PS3 related is negative or a thinly veiled insult so don't act so surprised when there is a little backlash.
el serpiente @ Sep 12th 2008 8:40PM
Marty, don't play dumb. You're too good at it.
Averna @ Sep 12th 2008 10:25PM
@marty
Yeah there are some assholes on this site, but you need to watch the videos, in 1080p. Hell even a screen cap at 1080p would be a good indication. Resized images generally dont look good. Watch the vid on the PSstore. I think its a good reflection of the game.
The biggest downfall are the interfaces, although I dont think we've seen the newest ones they threw in at the last moment.
colinbell @ Sep 13th 2008 4:24PM
Same question, Halo 3 versus Halo 1
SoulBlade @ Sep 12th 2008 1:23PM
Do want... but 8 tracks seems a bit limited.
GoonieGooGoo @ Sep 12th 2008 2:04PM
It's about time this came out...my PS3 I suspect is growing rust inside from non-use.
Informed @ Sep 15th 2008 5:00AM
If some of you guys haven't been playing your PS3 as a gaming console, that would be COMPLETELY your own faults. I have 27 retail titles and 14 PSN titles covering just about all genres.
In other words, stop with the Xbot comments. Sometimes you can just tell who has 360s or not just from the negative PS3 comments. Geez!
GoonieGooGoo @ Sep 15th 2008 10:58AM
Yes...I have both a 360 and PS3.....I do not purchase Multi-platform titles for my PS3 (what's the point?) only Sony or system exclusives.....which have been a trickle in recent months.
Most Dual System owners would agree with this statement.
Because of that fact...and that I still use my PS2 to play my PS2 games.....my PS3 does not get played. Just the way it is.
Arturo @ Sep 12th 2008 2:23PM
this finally seems within reach! i can feel it! yessssss!!!
phinn @ Sep 12th 2008 3:05PM
This looks like a game you gotta see in motion to truly appreciate. There are so many awesome PS3 games out or coming out, along with Blu-ray movies and such that it is a damn awesome console. I would say the best by far.
Dirty @ Sep 12th 2008 3:52PM
Thanks for that... Anonymous Sony Executive.
MuToiD_MaN @ Sep 12th 2008 4:10PM
Seriously, what a generic and obvious pro-PS3 comment. I'd fire you if I were paying you to write these comments.
phinn @ Sep 12th 2008 4:45PM
nope, i'm just an adoring fan overwhelmed by the amount of good games coming out that will make me broke if i buy them all.
MuToiD_MaN @ Sep 12th 2008 4:03PM
I know they don't want to promise a release date because they don't want to worry about slipping, but damn it all to hell, it would make ME feel a lot better knowing when it's coming.
Also, I'll say it again, I'm hoping for at least a Hot Coffee type mod that restores pre-epillepsy-reduction graphics.
Charlie_Six @ Sep 14th 2008 10:15PM
ugh i hate download-only games. Far from being cheaper than boxed retail games, most end up being considerably more expensive than their boxed counterparts. Why? Because you can't sell them.
Why must this game be a PSN Exclusive, when games like Warhawk offer both a PSN option and a boxed copy option??
Heck, it doesn't even *have* to be at retail stores. It doesn't even have to have a box. I just want to be able to buy the DISC from somewhere, thus being able to sell it off if I dislike the game.
Download-only games are a huge step backwards for the game industry, IMO. They're basically taking away a basic aspect of life, the ability to trade, and throwing it away.. and for what gain? Is it really beneficial to prevent people from trading games? For me it's often preventing me from buying these games, not the other way around. I regretted my online purchase of Day of Defeat Source for example. Then I was even more frustrated to find that the boxed copy of Orange Box w/ TF2 prevents you from selling the game because the games, once installed, are linked to your Steam account FOREVER. WTF.
This madness has got to stop!
GoonieGooGoo @ Sep 15th 2008 11:01AM
TO be honest...I did learn the boon of downloadable titles with WARHAWK.
If you own more than one PS3 system......having a disc copy can be a pain in the ass to play the game across the 2 systems as you need the disc.
With the downloadable version of games (ala WARHAWK)....you can install the game on each of the systems....no disc needed.
Works for all PSN purchases.
