As it turns out, there is a finite number of songs worth licensing for a rhythm game. So when
Guitar Hero World Tour and
Rock Band 2 vie for alone time in your living room this fall, don't be surprised when you play some identical tunes. We count sixteen:
- "The Kill" - 30 Seconds to Mars*
- "Ramblin' Man" - The Allman Brothers Band
- "One Way or Another" - Blondie
- "Livin' on a Prayer " - Bon Jovi
- "Feel the Pain" - Dinosaur Jr.
- "Go Your Own Way" - Fleetwood Mac
- "Everlong" - Foo Fighters
- "American Woman" - The Guess Who
- "Mountain Song" - Jane's Addiction
- "The Middle" - Jimmy Eat World
- "Our Truth" - Lacuna Coil
- "Float On" - Modest Mouse
- "Lazy Eye" - Silversun Pickups
- "Today" - Smashing Pumpkins
- "B.Y.O.B." - System of a Down*
- "Monsoon" - Tokio Hotel*

That really sucks...
All I really want GH for is L'Via and One Armed Scissor...
LettuceD @ Sep 15th 2008 3:47PM
Agreed. Two songs aren't enough to convince me to jump on board the plastic instrument train, though. I'm going to wait it out to see if any more ATDI or Mars Volta (hell, I'd even dig some Sparta) shows up through DLC.
nightmare452 @ Sep 12th 2008 3:06PM
That sucks for the people that buy both (crazy as that may sound, someone will do this)
I still wont buy any of them.
Lone Starr @ Sep 12th 2008 5:38PM
Thanks for playing.
Ghen @ Sep 12th 2008 7:51PM
I will buy both. The second one only costs as much as a normal game since both sets of instruments will work with both games.
Averna @ Sep 12th 2008 9:52PM
@ghen Thats exactly right, Im picking them all up. Just figuring out which bundle I want. Leaning toward GH bundle, but my GH3 guitar kinda sucked, so Im going to wait and see which is 'better'
Vcize @ Sep 12th 2008 10:05PM
Someone? Uh, I'm guessing most people will buy both.
When you're putting $150 into the instruments it's definitely worthwhile to pick up additional software that works for it and adds all kinds of new songs (even if some are repeated).
dror @ Sep 27th 2008 8:42AM
...Crazy?
do you have ANY idea what a mass of people are gonna buy both games? ...worldwide?
every music buff who plays rhythm games is gonna want 'em both - if not for the versatility in the song-list, then at least for gameplay.
...& Besides: KoRn, Van Halen, Ted Nugent, Tool, Lenny Kravitz, The DOORS, The EAGLES, JIMI HENDRIX!, Satriani, Ozzy, Oasis, Michael Jackson - make this game a must for every music fan. RB2 has musts of its own, therefore a lot of people are gonna wanna get both.
Jomolungma @ Sep 12th 2008 3:07PM
Quick question: Has anyone seen mention of whether the American Woman on either GH:WT or RB2 will be the full original version or the gimped version that plays on the radio a lot?
Jomolungma @ Sep 12th 2008 3:27PM
Nevermind, I found it on YouTube. Looks like its the gimped version, which sucks major ass IMO.
Ghen @ Sep 12th 2008 7:52PM
Yeah, totally.
Shagittarius @ Sep 12th 2008 3:14PM
that sucks. is there a gimped guess who version on the radio or are you talking about the lenny "my mom was famous and got my untalented ass this gig" kravitz version you hear on the radio?
Lucas and the Power Glove @ Sep 12th 2008 3:18PM
Rock Band 2 for me.
Beatz @ Sep 12th 2008 3:25PM
I'm getting both. I like to use the logic that even though there are 16 songs on both discs, that still leaves 70 songs that won't be on Rock Band 2 and vice versa. Considering Guitar Hero had just 45 songs (bonus included), it's still a pretty hefty selection. And I can't pass up the Wings, ever!
Also, I want to compare for myself the songs on both disc.
jed @ Sep 14th 2008 10:01PM
good point
Mike @ Sep 12th 2008 3:28PM
Can anyone here tell me how to retrieve my forgotten Joystiq password? I can't figure it out... You can insult me as long as you tell me how to do it.
Dirty @ Sep 12th 2008 3:44PM
Just put your email (that was associated with your old name) in as a new user. It will email you to confirm your comments and the password will be in that email.... Idiot.
Shagittarius @ Sep 12th 2008 3:48PM
lol, pwnd!
supakoopa @ Sep 12th 2008 3:29PM
Im sticking with Rockband 2 because I found the first Rockband to be better than Guitar Hero 3, also, I have alot of DLC, and RB2 comes out first.
RavenPaul @ Sep 12th 2008 3:34PM
Ha, and not even half of those are any good. I'll buy both games, but only used at the cheapest possible price.
ChuckD @ Sep 12th 2008 3:35PM
I guess we're running out of Rock.
platinum_pinoy @ Sep 28th 2008 7:22AM
No way man, there is a crap-load of rock out there. I am really disappointed that they share more than 5 songs because it really forces consumers to buy two products of similar content. Honestly, I'd rather have two products that have completely different content because both would have their own value and I'd think that each would gain success from their own uniqueness.
Dash @ Sep 12th 2008 3:36PM
That sucks.... Is anyone else disappointed with the WT setlist....?
vckilledme @ Sep 12th 2008 3:26PM
Not me. 2 Hendrix songs = instant win
Raikage (GOLDEN Gun Of The Patriots) @ Sep 12th 2008 4:49PM
Me either.
Sublime, Hendrix, Muse, Korn, Blink 182, CCR.
All of those are FTW x1000
And Tool??? If you're any good at any GH/RB instruments, you'll love some Tool.
Sora @ Sep 12th 2008 5:28PM
Because it's totally worth paying $60 minimum, $160-$180 maximum to play TWO Hendrix songs and a bunch of other songs on the side...
Jakka(Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 12th 2008 5:39PM
Crazy fucking Train, mofo!
I swear, if there was a GH or RB game that involved playing that bloody riff over and over again, I'd still buy it!
Jakka(Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 12th 2008 5:40PM
Who said the rest was bad? Hendrix is simply a highlight!
Vcize @ Sep 12th 2008 10:06PM
"I swear, if there was a GH or RB game that involved playing that bloody riff over and over again, I'd still buy it!"
I'm hoping that someone uses the music creator to do exactly this.
Hey Apples @ Sep 12th 2008 3:47PM
I'm expecting that number to go up with a "best of" No Doubt pack announced (probably to have Spiderwebs) plus the weekly flow of Rock Band DLC.
Thank goodness for Rock Band making the competition obsolete, one week at a time.
Shagittarius @ Sep 12th 2008 3:49PM
No doubt should have been named No talent, damn that band is shit.
Mimglow @ Sep 12th 2008 3:49PM
Don't forget that "Spiderwebs" will almost sure be part of Rock Band's No Doubt Greatest Hits pack.
I'll get both games, but Rock Band wins this round - again. (in my opinion if not in actual sales)
Philpott @ Sep 12th 2008 3:55PM
"The Kill" was in Rock Band 1
idl3mind @ Sep 12th 2008 3:56PM
why "B.Y.O.B."? that's already DLC for RB1.
I'm excited about seeing "Mountain Song" on the list though.
dark_inchworm @ Sep 12th 2008 5:16PM
RTFA (specifically, the note at the bottom)
ice~ @ Sep 12th 2008 3:57PM
sorry but it's rock band 2 for me :) I have 17 DLC songs, + I only like the guitar heroes HMX made...GH 3 was a major major disapointment to me...hated that setlist, but that's just my taste in music
Vcize @ Sep 12th 2008 10:07PM
Uh, you left out the part about what you're having for breakfast tomorrow morning and what clothes you're going to wear.
We're all dying to know more about your life, trust me.
quasebrasileiro @ Sep 13th 2008 3:35PM
The fact that he has 17 dlc songs for RB1 and didn't care for GH3 are logical reasons to go for RB2. That's not tangential or irrelevant, vcize.
ice~ @ Sep 14th 2008 12:10AM
yea lol...just sayin which game I'm getting :/
Mimglow @ Sep 12th 2008 4:02PM
Rock Band is Rock Band 2 is Rock Band 3. There's no distinction because you can play (almost) all songs from Rock Band 1, and its DLC, on Rock Band 2.
mietha CAG @ Sep 12th 2008 4:09PM
Lol. I actually couldn't figure out what point that guy was trying to make.
Ian R. @ Sep 12th 2008 4:21PM
You guys forgot about "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. That's in both games as well, bringing the total up to 17.
My vote is for Rock Band 2 because of the DLC compatibility (I already have a lot of RB1 songs downloaded.)
dark_inchworm @ Sep 12th 2008 5:16PM
+1 for epic correctness
ScottG13 @ Sep 12th 2008 4:43PM
The setlist, plus my purchase of the ION Drums has locked me down to Rock Band. I have too much invested in RB+DLC to move to a new platform. Sorry Activision. A year late and many dollars short.
FSK405K @ Sep 12th 2008 4:50PM
Both games would be much better with different more well-known songs than these 16. Snorefest.
dark_inchworm @ Sep 12th 2008 5:21PM
I'd say the majority of those are fairly well-known. I see 4 I'm not familiar with through the radio, and I almost completely ignore any station that isn't classic rock.
Tiptup300 @ Sep 13th 2008 1:03AM
If you are insulting Today, I'll have to hurt you. Today is one of the best songs ever .PERIOD.
Tiptup300 @ Sep 13th 2008 1:06AM
Now I shall recite all the lyrics I remember
Today is the greatest.
Today is the greatest day I've ever known.
Can't wait for tomorrow, tomorrow's much too long.
I'll burn my eyes out before I get it out.
I wanted more then I ever.....me.
..........
Today is the greatest day I've ever known.
Can't live for tomorrow, reminds me I'm alone.
I'll tear my heart out before I get it out.
.....
...
..

Mathieu Bonin @ Sep 12th 2008 5:44PM
I think you forgot Survivor - Eye of the Tiger in there.
zeldazeppelin @ Sep 12th 2008 5:59PM
I hope you know they get these by not just going I want this songs and then just paying for it.
The band might just not let them get a different song or the band may want the same son on both games.
There could also be legal reasons as well.
It not just Activision's or Harmonix's fault when the games share songs.
