Go out an buy one, they are the best value console by a massive margin. The best bit, is they work, and are quiet, and got a huge amount of great exclusives, with another boad load just about to land.

I do wish that I had something to hook my PS3 up to, but there's no VGA adapter for the thing. I would certainly get WipEout if I had something to play it on.

I wanna see a return of the Extreme G franchise rather than this. I believe it was Acclaim Entertainment that made that game back in the N64 days and they closed down. I know the Valiant Entertainment kept the Shadowman IP (my most wanted VC game, Shadowman on N64) but i dont know what happened to Forsaken (my 2nd most wanted VC game from N64) or Extreme G. Can anyone shed any light on these?

Wow, you were a big fan of the "me toos" I take it.

Wipeout>Extreme G
Get fast enough on Extreme G and you barely even had to steer...

Descent>Forsaken
Descent was awesome, Forsaken was a crappy imitator.

Forsaken was excellent...on N64. The N64 version had different missions, better multiplayer, and expansion-pack enhanced graphics. The coloured lighting at the time was a sight to behold and to this day i remain undefeated in multiplayer. The name Foetoid was the name of the biker i used. The N64 version was highly acclaimed by many publications for being an excellent game and the best version of the Forsaken games. I played Decent, a lot, and i far prefered Forsaken 64 over any of them. The controls were FAR! superior to anything Descent could do and the single player campaign on the N64 version was a lot longer. The PC version, and ESPECIALLY the Ps1 version were absolute bollocks, but the unique N64 version was excellent.

Extreme G isn't as good as Wipeout, still good though.

Although Extreme-G was always playing catch up with Wipeout, when XGIII released, it finally caught up. Many developers of the Wipeout team worked on XGIII and it showed. Then, they ruined the franchise with XGRA. :( I'd like to see a return as well, built off the mechanics of XGIII.

i haven't had a decent fill of Wipeout since part 3 on the PS1 (don't have a PSP). despite the fact that Fusion sucked monkey balls, the Wipeout series has been one of the most underrated racing series in modern gaming. simply cannot wait on Wipeout HD. will there be a Blu-ray disc version?

The game looks gorgeous, it still kills me that they're released it on PSN for $20 and not making it a full Blu-Ray title, because, given that there are more options and tracks I would without a doubt pay $60 for this.

The BD release will be WipEout PS3, new tracks and new features. Late 2009 release.

This version is a reinterpretation of old tracks etc.

Still buying it though as the cables to hook my PSP to the HDTV cost $20 so I'll just play it 'natively' on the PS3 and enjoy the new resolution.

anyone remember the Hackers Movie where Angelina Jolie plays Wipeout but it looks like a pre-rendered Ultra real looking wipeout, have this Wipeout caught up to that?

Wow, I remembered it much cooler as well! That's a good find, thanks for sharing - there's no way I was going to watch the movie again.

And the viewer comment is just as funny - "what a classic scene this is... one of the best movies of the 90s practically represented the techno world in a weird way..."

i loved the tv in that clip. the game looked okay to me, it's like they went with a more realistic look for the vehicle materials and track even though the setting was future fantasy.

Yeah, I remember that and I will raise you one by saying that I love the movie Hackers, I have the DVD sitting on my shelf, sort of as a joke, sort of serious. I also still have my 'longbox' version of WipeOut for the PS1, in the 'Designers Republic' designed package.

The version of WipeOut in the film was a mock-up done for the movie, and actually has more icon design from UK designer Neville Brody in it, before it was revamped by Designers Republic for the actual retail release.

"HACK THE PLANET!"

@ill:

I liked the movie too and also have it on my shelf. My wife loves and we just watched it a week ago hah. Even though Hackers never looked like that, I think it's the filmmakers way of portraying how the Hackers saw themselves... Their "avatar" if you will.

I'm very seriously considering jumping ship and picking up a PS3 for Christmas. Just so I can relate, would you describe this as a Mario Kart DS (MK Wii is dumbed down to shit) with more depth, faster gameplay, and more fair weapons/powerups? I've never played a Wipeout game and this is looking pretty cool but I don't understand how it plays 100%.

Jumping Ship is highly unadvised. You know damn well the moment you sell that Wii, Zelda will be announced. But there's nothing wrong with going multiconsole.

But to answer your question, Wipeout really stands alone in a lot of ways. In the way the ships handle it's much more like flying rather than driving. So as you go faster, you have to learn your drifting speed for various vehicles as you take turns and such. Likewise, as you take hits, your car loses control and drifts momentarily. In that way, there is a lot more depth in the simple fact of controlling your vehicle. It's a world of difference even from titles like Extreme-G and F-Zero.

Weapons work differently as well. You have a shield before you explode. So when you grab weapons you can either use it or divert the energy of those weapons to your shields. There are also no "win" attacks. Even the homing missiles are rare enough that you can't depend on them.

All in all, I'd suggest spending your first time in Zone mode, it really trans you how to handle the higher speeds and turns much better.

The Wipeout series is much faster and requires alot of skill to get really good at it. Once you get the hang of it...the game is pure bliss.

I think this game has very little in common with MK, other than they are both arcade racing games. For one, you are floating and the way you turn takes alot of practice, until you get the hang of it...you will be bouncing off walls with the slightest hickup in your race line.

Keep at it, and you will come to love this game.

If you are thinking of picking up a PS3, do some research yourself and find out what the PS3 has to offer ASIDE from videogames. There is so much more that the PS3 can do. If you have any other questions, I am sure myself or others will be happy to answer.

Hope that helped.

Rather than "jump ship" you can just change your name to PSWiiFTW. Sheppy's right - the second you sell the Wii, something you want will be announced for it.
