We just poured out some virtual ones for our fallen homey the Dreamcast, and now Peter Moore has recalled his fond memories of the labor pains and death throes of the unfortunate console with The Guardian.
As you read the whole account, it's interesting to see that the Dreamcast didn't actually die, it just didn't get huge quick enough. It's a solemn reminder of why you don't see more smaller companies with limited cash flow trying (and succeeding) to get into the console game.
Oh, and if you don't care about gaming history in the slightest, you can at least read about Peter Moore playing against Ice Cube in NBA 2K1. So, you know, there's a little something for everybody.

Preface - I'm not here to troll on the 360 or PS2.
Fact - My original launch dreamcast is still in perfect operating condition. I have never had a single issue with the console as far as the operability.
Fact - I have been through multiple PS2's & 360's. The PS2 (fat & slim) was especially bad with disc drive failures. At one point I increaased the disc speed in the settings and was suprised that it made it functional for another 2 weeks. WTF is that.
My 360's had some disc read errors but more to do with the over heating issues that most of us have exoerienced.
Conclusion: The Dreamcast (with all of its faults) was, at the very least a dependable console. It also had some creative things with the memory card slot's screen. I like the console - alot actually. I thought that the Dreamcast was truly a revolutionary device and ahead of its time.
In between the time that RE:4 was on the GC and the Wii dropped I actually thought Nintendo might pull a SEGA and get out of the console business. How wrong was I.
I wish that SEGA was still relevant to the games business as a hardware manufacturer. Maybe there will be a day where we see another SEGA console. Because, we can say at the very least that SEGA produced quality hardware. The bigger problem was an established competitor and a lack of compelling software. Sound familiar?

SEGA tried to compete with a hardware giant on a hardware giant's terms
If you can't compete, and don't change the rules of the game, you will be destroyed. I still wonder at the fact that it didn't happen to Nintendo, and am glad that they learned from SEGA's demise.

So if SEGA gets anywhere near the Wii admin., we know where thats going.

SEGA being one of the few 3rd parties that's really clicked on the Wii. House of the Dead, the exclusive Sonic titles, Samba, etc. SEGA did do things that Nintendo never did (hello, online), but at heart they were two companies of similar temperament.
Indeed, in the high days of the Dreamcast vs PS2 war, SEGA declared that they were still more scared of what Nintendo could do than what Sony could

Well OF COURSE the Wii sucks (the only thing its good for is making a quick buck around christmas What I was refering to is that the only thing that they have in common is that people made fun of their names.
And what I meant is that if SEGA managed to screw up the best system in history, imagine the damage they can do to the Wii.
Gimmie a Dreamcast, NEOGEO, and Virtual Boy and I shall forget about the rest.

Microsoft and Sony had much more money than Sega ever could have had. They didn't stand a chance.
Other big thing was is that the Dreamcast arguably came out at the wrong time, right between two console generations, between the PS1 and PS2, between N64 and Gamecube, etc. Just a year later, the PS2 had launched and the Gamecube and Xbox were around the corner as well.

There would be no justice if Nintendo failed... it would just be mega-corporations like Sony and Microsoft creating console making mini-companies.
In a perfect world, Mario, Link and Samus would be competing against Sonic, Beat and Ulala. With Sony and Microsoft making God of War and Halo for both systems.

I'll remember dreamcast with fond memories even 50 years from now. I can still remember what I felt when I bought it and brought it home, and what it felt to play games like Grandia II, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Metropolis Street Racer, Dead or Alive, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone 2 ("Hey hey hey! Don't fall off! Cos it's a long way down there!"), Shenmue 2, Sonic Adventure, Chuchu Rocket, Phantasy Star Online, etc.. etc.. omfg.. screw you all third party developers for jumping on Sony playstation 2 hype bandwagon!

I'll always remember standing in line at my local EB at 5:00AM to get the Dreamcast I preordered months prior...
I got the system, an extra controller, Soul Calibur, NFL2K, and a VMU and drove home at about 90mph to play it.
When I first popped in Soul Calibur and saw its beauty, it started an instant love-fest for the DC for me.
It also brings me back to simpler days. I was only 20, and still living the life of a kid. Fond memories all around.

All I ever hear was how much people loved Power Stone 2. Hopefully, that means we can get it on xbla or a true sequel (now that Smash bros. has continued to thrive).

I miss all those arcade ports. I think Sega died along with the arcades honestly. They both burned out about the same time. I guess that is really what gaming is to me, so in my opinion we lost the company that really represented that era. It's kinda sad.
I miss playing Daytona USA, Jet Grind Radio, Soul Calibur, Ikaruga, .. I could go on. The Dreamcast still gets a lot of play time here, especially when I want to play the best version of Marvel VS Capcom 2 :D.
It is a shame, because unlike something like the NGage, it's not like the system was doing poorly by any means.. it just got snuffed out by Sony's monopolistic take over of the industry at that time lol.
I too miss the days when in order to have a successful gaming console, you didn't need to back it by 18 other industries worth of revenue from sister companies you owned. It's one reason, no matter what odd decision the company makes, I will always silently cheer for Nintendo. If that company goes, then every company I grew up with will have pretty much disappeared, which is a shame. Young fanboys who don't get what many of us grew up with (arcades and pong systems), will never understand how stupid it is to *wish* a company to go out of business when they talk ill of Nintendo. But if they ever did get snuffed out, I think they'd soon realize what they lost.
Here's to one of the greatest. Cheers.

Very true, much of the greatness that we recall from the DC and Saturn eras were arcade titles, which is where SEGA came from
Sony didn't kill SEGA, though, SEGA killed SEGA. It's like the old idea, that if you step up to bat to try to hit a home run, you're probably going to fail, as opposed to just trying to make a hit. They burnt too hard and burnt the fire of the Dreamcast right out

i wonder how the dreamcast would of fair if they included the dvd capabilities. i know for a fact that was the selling point for ps2 back then. dvd players were expensive and ps2 was a cheap dvd player and gaming console.
my friend's father bought the ps2 specifically for it's dvd capabilities cause we all knew how crappy ps2 games were when it first launched.

The problem with the Dreamcast was Peter Moore. The guy is an imbecile of biblical proportions. Seriously how he has got to where he is confounds me. He has destroyed every company he has worked for.
We'll start with Patrick, at the time one of the biggest names in soccer. Peter Moore came along and within a few years you just didn't here about Patrick anymore, why well Peter Moore of course.
He then moved on to Reebok. At the time they dethroned Nike as the leading maker of athletic shoes thanks in part to the exercise boom of the '80s. Peter Moore came along and where is Reebok now, a shadow of its former self and kept alive because of massive investments in the NFL. In truth the company is not doing so well and the #1 outlet for Reebok shoes is Sears.
Peter Moore then decided to move into a new industry and took his position at Sega. We all know what happened there.
Then good ol' Peter took a job at Microsoft and presided over multi-billion dollar losses that would have sank any other company and released the worst quality hardware in the history of video game consoles. That Steve Balmer sought him out speaks volumes about the leadership quality of Balmer. Arguably one of the worst people running a company today.
This guy is still employed at a high level in a major corporation. That fact pretty much proves that the people running US corporations are total idiots. Moore must be very good at hiding money and negotiating stock scams. It is the only way he can stay at the top. It is also the reason why the economy is in the state it is in. A whole lot of companies are run by people like Peter Moore.
