Games conform to the limits of the market leader, plain and simple, which the 360 is. Just as the PS2 dictated the fidelity of games in its generation. Get used to it PS3 owners, the 360 is currently setting the pace of gaming.

So does anyone know what the actual royalty fee per extra disc is? Or for that matter, why they actually charge for extra discs in the first place?

It just doesn't make sense for MS to almost force developers to gimp their releases when they should be embracing them for wanting to put out the best game possible.

Does Sony have royalty fees as well? I can't see anyone going multi blu-ray (for now), but on the PS and PS2?

Is this because of Microsoft's charges for each disc again?

From a business standpoint it doesn't make sense to release an inferior product for all systems when just not making the game for 360 or only cutting down the 360 version is just so logical. You are limiting and penalizing all gamers because of seriously flawed logic. ID software is full of a bunch of morons. There is no nicer way to put it.

who cares? this game is going to be overly hyped like every other id game and will fall EXTREMELY SHORT of the expectations it sets forth. 360 owners will have to swap discs, and possibly PC users for the initial install unless they use one of those donwload distribution things.

the game will suck. no one cares. it'll be another 2 years before you can even see gameplay footage.

I have to agree with you on the game probably being terrible to average. Also, look at all the free publicity this has created, I think this whole mess is calculated.

This is actually a bit of a weird one for people to get their heads around because they don't understand the megatexture technology.

It's a completely weird concept for a hardware designer to account for before it was developed and used in a game engine successfully.

The issues here are that the megatextures are huge, so they take up a lot of initial space, which means you need a lot of capacity to store them.

Then you need to be able to load that data into memory to be used, the 360 has the PS3 on it's knees with this one which is why it's a bit strange to see these comments from id.

The PS3 version and the PC versions will likely install to the HDD (maybe even an install per wasteland on the PS3 version, I'd guess) because the HDD is faster.

The gimping of the game then comes down to only two things, not every 360 has a hard drive (but games such as football manager have been allowed to be released despite not running without the HDD before) and the costs of more discs are expensive.

So the only real viable explanation for the content being cut on the 360 is that id were not able to get a better deal out of MS on the disc licencing fees. They came out publicly before and talked about the 3rd disc cost to position for a discount, MS have said no so now they're hitting MS in the kidneys with a sucker punch PR move as an underhand tactic to give MS a problem.

Whether the content fits onto a single Blu-ray or could have shipped on 3 Dvds is a futile argument, the arguement is about cost, not capability and anyone who knows a thing or two about megatextures will know that in terms of running ability the PS3 is theoretically the worst real-time performer of the system because of its RAM and VRAM constraints.
