I do love me some RPGs, but I find that I really, REALLY need to be in the mood to commit to a new one. It takes so long to fully beat a good RPG that for the most parts, I'd rather play something like New Super Mario Brothers, something I can turn on, play a few levels and then shut off and not have to pick up again anytime soon - no commitment.

The World Ends With You alllll the way.
Best DS ARPG ever.
But sadly most of the DS's RPG's do not tickle my fancy.

Exactly! After being in an RPG drought for the past 12 years from the N64 and GameCube, I'm glad to be getting some quality RPGs! Especially from Squuenix.

My only complaint is that they're coming out too fast. I haven't completed Final Fantasy 4 yet and now Dragon Quest 4 is calling my name.

Too many RPG's on the DS? No. The more the better.

Portability + RPG? What's better? I can play all I want and not hog the TV. It seriously helps with the wife agro.

There's no such thing as "too many RPGs." The fact that the DS has so many of them means that us RPG fans can pick and choose which ones we want to play – we have options, which is great. So there's something for everyone.

Without any intention of trolling, RPGs reach such a wide audience because they're not challenging at all and have such great depth that you can be easily sucked in and emmersed in a different world.

Too many RPGs? Hardly. Look at the SNES: FF, CT, DQ, Earthbound, SD, and BoF just to name a small fraction. Fans love the games, game companies love the profit. The general idea becomes make game on one system, port it to 3 other systems with usually small, insignificant changes, and profit. Let's face it, we all fall for this formula.

I'd say the DS is just getting started in its real library of RPGs, and I can guarantee that myself and many others are looking forward to the many great future releases.

If we're talking about Japanese RPG, I'm not interested, but, there's plenty of place for everyone here.
They'd rather release a Fallout-style RPG, or something like The Elder Scrolls: Arena. THAT is RPG!

And LucasArt's X-Wing Alliance, me want too.

It feels to me like MOST of the RPGs on the DS released up until now are either strategy/tactical (which I don't think is the best for a portable system. Quicker battles work a lot better in my mind), or mindnumbing Rogue-clones/dungeon crawlers.

I could go for a few more ATB/Turn based ones. Really looking forwad to Suikoden.

DS is good at five genres, and all should get quality time:
1. RPGs (though I think handheld RPGs should be no more than 10-20 hours -- playing a 50+ hour RPG on a handheld is too much work!)
2. Platformers (Mario, duh)
3. Puzzles (Prof. Layton r0xxoR!)
4. Adventures (Hotel Dusk, and I was one of the 6 people that liked Touch Detective)
5. Kiddie games (Poke'mon, Yugi'oh)

I just wish vendors would stay away from sports games and first person shooters. The tiny screen and lack of a good analog stick (even on the PSP) make them yucky.

Having gone through my teenage years with the Gamecube as my primary console, the use of the word "kiddie" to describe any game automatically sets off alarm bells. The term, when unsupported, is about a nebulous as "casual" and "hardcore". If you haven't played a Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh game before, try and push aside everything your friends told you in junior high and give 'em a try; you just might be surprised :)

@Zealot -- Fair enough, it was a poor choice of word. Actually, I've tried a couple of the Pokemon titles, and found them to be pretty meh and shallow, but maybe it was just the nature of the two I played (Diamond on the DS, and the first Mystery Dungeon game). But you're right -- the characters in most JRPGs are every bit as cartoony and cute as those in Pokemon, yet I find myself more tolerant of JRPGs for some reason.

I love the idea of RPGs, but usually I'm not patient enough to get sucked into them. I really liked Shiren, because 1) I already love roguelikes, and 2) it wasn't so hard to finish the main quest while still offering tons of extras to do afterward.

Seriously! I haven't even gone through the list of RPGs I just HAVE to play on the PS2 yet! This is making choosing a game to play very difficult. So far I've bought all the "good" ones and haven't finished any of them.

No, I say, it needs more RPGs...tactical ones, specifically.

Mainly because that's something (I feel) the DS in particular is suited to so well. I like Neverwinter Nights as much as the next person, but I don't think it would work half as well in DS form. Same with Morrowind and Fallout. I mean...if a system's doing something well, and seems made to continue to do it well (split screens means unit management is easier, they can do an overhead shot of the battlefield, etc), I see no reason why not to continue with it.

Honestly, I think RPGs in general are one of the best genres to have on the DS. RPGs are mostly interactive stories. They don't need superior graphics in HD resolutions to get those across. Besides that, the portability of the DS allows you to take them anywhere without being shackled to a home console. For someone on the go a lot, I greatly appreciate that.

Another aspect is that, unlike most modern RPGs that are all about how many tens or hundreds of hours of gameplay they offer, the smaller size of the DS cards prevents the games from getting "too big". Yes, there is a point where a game is just too large to do what you want in it (or at least do it and still be able to do anything else with your life). Back in the SNES days, the games were smaller, but still robust and complete stories. This was helpful when you wanted to move on to another game or just replay through one quickly. Chrono Trigger was a perfect example because it was long enough to take a few days to play, but short enough that you could play through it all over again if you wanted to. There are so many good games out there and not enough time to experience them all, so I've come to appreciate the "short and sweet" aspect of smaller games.

And the last aspect of why the DS is a bit better than the PSP, even though they're both portable. The first reason is the interface. The dual screens are quite helpful in displaying other information like maps or player data so that the main screen can show more important information or more of the action. And whether you use it or not, the touch screen interface can come in handy for menu navigation. The PSP may be able to trump the DS on graphics, sound, and capacity, but it also loses out on battery life. I can charge my DS once before a trip and it'll last most of the weekend. I couldn't say the same for the PSP.

Too many RPGs that haven't been translated and released in North America? CERTAINLY. (Give me those Tales games, you no-good hooligans!)

(OT: I'll also add the visual novels released on DS to the list of stuff I wish would get ported here...)

Been a huge RPG fan from Secret of Mana & Final Fantasy VI all the way up to Kingdom Hearts II & Dragon Quest VIII (and most Square games in between).

Work and marriage take up more time than homework ever did, but hopefully I'll get around to some of the newer DS ones! I did give FFIII a try but... eesh... stopped for a bit and lost track of what I was doing. Looking forward to winning FFIV *hint hint*

I love anything that tells a good story, and generally, RPGs do. However, the RPGs of late on the DS have been mediocre at best, and totally lacking in the storytelling department. I'm not even going to mention the endless grind that is strategy RPGs or rogue-likes.
What I really want from an RPG, is an immersive world and a story that brings you back time and time again, without endless random confrontations whilst trying to get from A to B. The best example I can think of is Grandia 2. The story was always moving on to greater things, yet the dialogues were never too long to be bothersome. There was a good balance between action and storytelling, which made the entire package just so likeable. Not to mention a truelly innovative combat system that remained fun throughout the game, not a novelty that wears off after a couple of hours.
Another good example is Golden Sun, as it retained all that is good within the genre, and elaborated, without touching the foundations. It really felt like an old school RPG, but the story was more engaging, the system more inventive. That's the kind of RPG you expect anno 2008. Not rehashes of old games (I enjoy FF3 and 4 to some extent, but these games were made in different times. Story is near none-existant in FF3, and FF4 is either excruciatingly hard, or an endless grind. Though I have high hopes for Chrono, because the story was already on par back in the day.), or 5minute translations from Japanese games. The translations we get from some jap games are just.. Unplayable. I can't believe any company would consider releasing these things. It's full of lulz and dudes and n00bs! It's like they think they have to cater to todays infantile internet generation!
That's where Summon Nights went wrong. Thouroughly enjoyable action RPG, but I had to let go once the "story" kicked in. The talk was just... Ridiculous.
Anyway, long story short, what I really want now, more than anything, is quality. The DS is heading in the direction of the playstation 1 and 2: just pouring out mediocre games at a high pace to fill their catalogue, without spending time to make a real gem. There are but few games that really warrant buying a DS, and these are limited to the usual first party titles: the new mario, new zelda, and the list actually ends there for me. The DS's position as cash-machine aren't doing it any good. Companies are just rolling out one game after the other, just hoping to cash in. Is a new plain vanilla Final Fantasy too much to ask for? Or a new RPG by Camelot? A continuation of the Metroid platformers on GBA? High quality translations from the Tales-series? Or Xenosaga or Valkyre Profile? Or am I too old already and have I burnt out on games entirely? Please DS, don't let me down...

I suspect people haven't commented on your post because it's long. In an ADD-afflicted world, fecundity is a fault.

But don't let that sway you. Your post was the most thoughtful in a queue of thoughtful posts.

Your point about balance is well-taken. Perhaps Square-Enix will consider it next time they're about to barrage the player with repeating unskippable dialogue and cutscenes.

You should visit the Atlus forums and post your ideas there. In my experience, that company actually listens.

Personally, I don't think you can have too many of a certain genre on a system. It gives more variety to people because not everyone is going to like every single title, even if they're a fan of that genre.

As long as it's not shovelware, I'm not going to complain. I don't have to buy every single game out there, but I do like to have the choice to have a wide variety of titles that really pique my interest.

Frastoglegnia, thank you for your kind words. It seems however, we are some of the few who actually feel that this is a problem. Though maybe we're just some of the older users here on DSFanboy :)

"In an ADD-afflicted world, fecundity is a fault.": that just about sums up my lengthy post. I fear that new media is shortening our attention span and the kids of today want to be able to browse through a game quickly so they can get to the next game. It's really a problem of having too much choice rather than too little. It's a luxury problem which manifests itself in all media, and unfortunately for us, a gaming system aimed mostly at youngsters will result in exactly that.

I'll keep it shorter this time, I've made my point. I just hope some developers actually care enough to accommodate some of the other players out there.
