Nega-review: Rock Band 2

"Most folks... may be a bit disappointed to find World Tour largely unchanged." (4) Yes, "the World Tour mode itself is basically unchanged." (8) "The progression ... is almost completely identical to last year's, ... the world map uses the same art and the challenges are set up the same way as in the original." (4) "The World Tour hasn't changed too much." (1) "It's essentially the same show." (3) and "it's hard to notice the newness when there's a big chunk of game that is just the same as it ever was." (4)

As far as song selection, "we still need more songs that girls like to sing, and the game's music selection is approaching a nearly unbearable level of suburban whiteness." (6) "There are going to be a few tracks each person will not care for." (4) and "no matter what your preferences are, you'll likely end up despising 10 or 15 songs." (6) "Paramore is, you know, awful." (1) and "if one more person comes to my apartment and demands to sing 'Say It Ain't So,' I'm going break the disc in half." (6) As for Guns N' Roses big new song, Shackler's Revenge, it's "kind of bad" (1) and "unfortunately boring." (7)

"The [new guitar] sees mostly cosmetic fixes, adding no significant new functionality for guitarists." (7) Overall, it's "still inferior to previous Guitar Hero offerings." (4) As for the new drums, the velocity sensitivity "doesn't really have any impact on the gameplay. " (1) But the vocal gameplay is the worst. "A basic problem of the vocal technology that Harmonix uses is that it lets you pass songs without actually singing the on-screen lyrics; your voice just has to be on pitch. ... There are plenty of supposedly difficult vocals you can pass easily by just singing random consonants or repeating a particular word." (8) "It's stunningly easy to earn 100% on expert vocals in 'Give It Away' and 'Testify.'" (4) Also, "I'm still pretty disappointed by the pitch recognition in the singing section." (9)
A "closely derivative encore," (3) Rock Band 2 is "a collection of interface tweaks and non-earth-shattering new features." (6) "It doesn't reinvent the wheel," (5) it "isn't a vast overhaul of the Rock Band formula." (1) and it "still has its share of frustrating foibles and glitches." (9) In fact, it "doesn't do much to change the formula" (7) at all. In the end, Rock Band 2 is guilty of "often forgoing a great game experience in favor of a great music experience." (6) "Think of this as Rock Band 1.5 - or maybe a little less." (3)
And it came to pass/that the Rock Band 2 Nega-review was born!" As usual, this Nega-review takes the middling negatives from a bunch of overwhelmingly positive reviews and puts them together in a blistering package. The purpose isn't to denigrate a game that's obviously great, but simply to point out the small but valid flaws that sometimes get lost in the tsunami of positive coverage.
Interestingly, the main negative leveled in most of these reviews -- that the new game was too similar to the original Rock Band -- was not seen as a huge negative to most reviewers. Why not? Because the original Rock Band was awesome, they all seem to agree. Reviewers might not be so forgiving if the experience remains largely unchanged the next time around, though...

Most of these went without saying, considering the similarities to the first one.
Although, still lawl.
COLD13 @ Sep 17th 2008 1:39PM
it is a big expansion basically! i guess they could of just released those songs individually! ha! but really i got it and i traded in rockband 1 for it so it only cost me like 40 bucks! im hooked on these games! i could really use some CAKE and GOLDFINGER but maybe some day they will be on one of the games!
Ghen @ Sep 17th 2008 8:15AM
Yay! I missed the nega-review! Couldn't understand the feature the first 10 times, but once I got the idea its very useful!
Courtney @ Sep 17th 2008 4:40PM
I think it was a nega-review that first got me sucked into Joystiq. It's one of the best features on the site and I've missed it.
Seanross @ Sep 17th 2008 8:37AM
Good thing I've only played the RB1 once at someones house, so I couldn't really look at this as more of the same. I want RB2, but this review makes me doubt myself now... They have songs I want to play but I'm wondering now if I should save my money.
Zeromaru @ Sep 17th 2008 8:40AM
Most of those negatives stem entirely from the misunderstanding that Rock Band 2 is a sequel, when it is not. It's just Rock Band, version 2, in the exact same vein as new versions of PC software.
Ghen @ Sep 17th 2008 12:11PM
Well doesn't that suck. $60 for a patch? Admittedly a whole number patch, but still.
Zeromaru @ Sep 17th 2008 12:16PM
So Windows Vista was a free patch of XP? OS X Leopard just a free enhancement for Tiger? Surely Adobe CS3 was a touchup for all owners of CS2....
I never said minor update. I said version 2. I guess saying "version two point oh" would've been clearer, but it's a major non-free upgrade.
Anam @ Sep 17th 2008 12:34PM
A patch + 80ish songs (100ish once they release the 20 free downloadable songs)
I think of this as a really big music bundle with some improvements. And since none of my friends play music games, being able to tour solo made this feel like a full sequel for me.
Jack @ Sep 17th 2008 2:08PM
I agree Zero.
Everyone knows Harmonix's battle plans already. As seen with Guitar Hero:
Step 1: Make an awesome game
Step 2: Improve on the game, tweak it a little, and make it a fun round 2.
Step 3: Make a new ORIGINAL IP which redefines the way we play.
Step 4: Repeat.
I like it better than Activision's strat:
Step 1: Get your hands on an established liecense
Step 2: WHORE WHORE WHORE
Step 3: When it begins to die be unoriginal and WHORE WHORE WHORE some more.
Michelobius @ Sep 18th 2008 12:42PM
Step 4: ?
Step 5: PROFIT
Tom Whitaker @ Sep 17th 2008 9:19AM
"The game's music selection is approaching a nearly unbearable level of suburban whiteness."
Crikey. Are people really allowed to write that?
JoeTheBlow @ Sep 17th 2008 8:50AM
Is there any black heavy metal or rock?
I don't follow it, so i honestly don't know.
dark_inchworm @ Sep 17th 2008 9:08AM
If Harmonix doesn't include Milli Vanilli in the next release, I'm completely writing off Rock Band.
And wouldn't it make perfect sense? You know, avatars representing you singing, all that jazz...
Xoviet chiK @ Sep 17th 2008 9:18AM
Thin Lizzy, Bob Marley, The Doobie Brothers, Killswitch Engage, Dead Kennedys, Lenny Kravitz... A few of the most mainstream bands to feature "Black" musicians and vocalists, among many others. I mean it is generally considered fact that Rock & Roll was invented in the US as an evolution of the jazz and the blues by African American musicians.
I'd love me some Bob Marley and Thin Lizzy in RB2!
szycag @ Sep 17th 2008 10:53PM
Needs more Bad Brains!!
Marcus @ Sep 17th 2008 8:52AM
Yes, it is certainly too bad that Rock Band 2 is so similar to the best video game of all time and (almost) exactly what Harmonix promised, an attempt to perfect rather than reinvent. And it really sucks that there are so many tracks that you're going to end up hating 10-15 of the (soon-to-be) 500 of them available. I mean, gosh, I know I play Rock Band because the graphics are amazing and absolutely not because of the music. /sarcasm
I dunno. I guess I get the point of the nega-review, but some of these complaints are absolutely bogus - the "suburban whiteness" of rock and roll is a complaint against a video game? WTF. I think a real complaint (like the talkie expert vocals songs being, er, "missing any sort of difficulty whatsoever") might get lost in the cacophony.
As a non-gamer who went out and bought an XBox360 to play Rock Band and pretty much has only played the one game for months now, I'm kinda' glad they just refined and didn't overhaul. I thought RB1 was good enough that I didn't NEED a new game, particularly since Harmonix kept releasing DLC every week to keep the game fresh. All the little interface refinements are why I ended up getting RB2 (not to mention the extra 100 songs, natch) and why I'll probably keep this disc in my XBox360 until RB3.
Gunner McGrath @ Sep 17th 2008 9:44AM
Yeah, except that I paid $60 for 84 songs and a VERY minor gameplay update (the only advantage I see is requiring you to press start instead of the green button when you're in band formation mode so your drunk friends don't keep hitting the wrong button), and only 10 or so of those songs are actually good. I'd have highly preferred they just release all those songs as optional downloads and given the original a bit of a software update. Then I could have spent like $10 to get the songs I wanted and spent the rest on other downloadable tracks that I hadn't yet been able to justify buying. Now that I am so disappointed with RB2 I will definitely not be buying another rhythm game without renting it first.
J.Goodwin @ Sep 17th 2008 10:03AM
What these guys perceive as "suburban whiteness" I perceive as Boston-centric. Even setting aside the bands that are directly related to Harmonix, the rest of the songs are quite heavily seeded with the greatest Boston bands of all time (with one so far suspiciously missing, and I ain't talking about Aerosmith), and bands that were produced by Ric Ocasek (from the Cars) or other guys from the Boston area. Their threads of influence are pretty easily discernible. That's fine by me because, 1. I'm from Boston, 2. They're fucking great songs.
I mean, let's be frank, Boston isn't a huge hotbed of R&B or anything (though we do have at least one excellent rapper). This isn't the klesmer capital of the world, and mariachi bands aren't really our thing.
Bakkster @ Sep 17th 2008 11:02AM
@Gunner McGrath
I actually love the new game modes: Challenge mode and Battle of the Bands. Also, the new quickplay browser with the ability to make setlists is fantastic.
They obviously didn't get mentioned in the nega-review because, well, there was nothing negative about them...
Marcus @ Sep 17th 2008 1:39PM
@Gunner McGrath
I recommend that you do rent games before you buy them. Also, if you're in the market for something that costs $60 USD, you could perchance do a bit of online research. After all, the updates and track list (with links to you tube videos) for RB2 which you seem so disappointed in were not difficult to find on the RB forums or even this here website. Or, you know, you could just be upset. I get that, too.
mrwhitethc @ Sep 17th 2008 8:46AM
Good, I didn't want my Rock Band changed just yet, I wanted more songs. Thank you Rock Band 1.5 for giving us the ROCK!
JoeTheBlow @ Sep 17th 2008 8:47AM
Jesus christ on a bike!
That was pretty much unreadable. NEVER do that "put-numbers-everywhere, with index at the bottom", thing ever again.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Sep 17th 2008 9:40AM
I usually have Jesus portrayed as being on a crutch, but your characterization had me laughing b/c I imagined him honking the little horn, with streamers on the handlebars.
RavenPaul @ Sep 17th 2008 11:00AM
Hmmm, I have Him sitting at the right hand of the Father, and being the eternal Judge of the earth. Do you have to use his name in vain? Funny how they only say His name as a swear word, never Buddah or Mohammed.
Haggard (Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 17th 2008 10:58AM
I don't see how colour coding them or anything else you can think of would be any better, unless you write all the negative points of each review under a seperate subheading.
...wait.. that's not a bad idea.
Kersh @ Sep 17th 2008 8:47AM
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 17th 2008 9:36AM
If it's not new enough, don't charge sixty bucks for it.
Kizzle @ Sep 17th 2008 9:51AM
It IS new enough, and those 84 songs aren't just fucking given to Harmonix.
Xoviet chiK @ Sep 17th 2008 10:01AM
84 Songs, the lowest DLC asking price is $1 and there have been three free songs so far. So, if you buy it for the songs alone, you are saving at least $21 US on marketplace downloads.
Of course, not all songs are $1, and none of these songs are what I'd consider "odd enough to be free," I'd say the marketplace value of all the songs would probably be closer to $134.40 US (factoring 3/4 would be $2, and 3/8 would be in a song pack with a $.20 discount, and the other 21 would likely be $1 songs which aren't discounted in song packs).
$134 US is a savings of $74 if you just purchased the songs... And yet, that doesn't quite cover the cost to develop the new features. Somehow, I think it may just be worth it at $60 US even if it is Rock Band 1.5. That's enough for some people, dare I say most.
Burritoclock @ Sep 17th 2008 10:03AM
84 DLC songs at a dollar = $84.00
84 songs on disc = $60.00
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 17th 2008 11:38AM
...yeah I didn't really think of it like that. My fellow Joystiqers win.
343 Guilty Fart @ Sep 17th 2008 1:32PM
I guess my beef with it is that the original RB was touted essentially as it's own "platform". Now they've released a new one, so much for that old thinking.
And really, it hasn't even been a year since the original, I could easily have gone until next holiday season before I needed this. It's not like the original was in need of a new version. /end rant
CubeGuy @ Sep 17th 2008 3:28PM
@343
I would agree with you if it were not for the fact that you can play all the old songs on RB2. I like this method of building the platform.
Xoviet chiK @ Sep 17th 2008 8:52AM
I agree with (8) about spending money... It would be nice if you actually had to use money to continue, to buy that jet, van, and pay for roadies. It would ad an entirely new dynamic to the game.
I was kind of disapointed they didn't go all out and make a Rock Band RPG-lite / resource management type deal. Where you actually do have to progress in the game by managing your band on a greater level then deciding which venues to play in and at what difficulty. Maybe next time, though... It's not like it was missing from the game. It would be a cool feature that's all.
Also, I'm a little disappointed there aren't acoustic guitars, and the overall new customization aspects are slim. I still can't create a character that is truly representative of what I'd want them to be. It would be nice to use the Xbox LIVE Vision camera for calibration as well, but I manually calibrated well enough until I can get the new guitar.
I have to say my biggest complaint, which is quite small itself, is that you can no longer "change art" and keep the are the same scale. You can't make an L, copy it, change it to an O, and have it be the same size. It always reverts to default. That's something that you could do in Rock Band. But again, it's a very small complaint.
Rock Band 2 just kicks too much ass. Since Nov. 20th 2007, Rock Band has been arguably my most played game. I can say the longest I went without playing it was two weeks when we were out of town, otherwise maybe a week. I know Rock Band 2 will be off the game shelf for at least another year, if only for Battle of the Bands and DLC... I'll keep coming back.
Ghen @ Sep 17th 2008 12:14PM
Sort of like Smash brothers brawl's subspace emissary, completely unneeded but fun for the RPGers. I like it.
Anam @ Sep 17th 2008 12:46PM
I didn't know that about art reverting. Thanks for the info. One thing I didn't like it's missing a lot (all?) of the art from the first game. I miss my guitar with a flock of birds flying out of gears, it was so damn Brazil-like!
(Though my current band logo that features an oven with arms is pretty awesome too...)
Solid Chief @ Sep 17th 2008 8:56AM
How long did this take you to make Kyle? These always seem to amaze me. Thanks.
I'd say I won't buy Rockband 2 because of this but then again, Australia doesn't have #1 ;p
Kyle Orland @ Sep 17th 2008 11:08AM
They take a decent amount of time to make, but it's worth is just to "amaze" you. =)
ToRo @ Sep 17th 2008 9:39AM
If Rock Band 2 got a nega review then the new guitar is gonna have one double this size. If reviewers complain about something so little as the game being to similar to last years RB then the new guitar hero is gonna get slaughtered.
Ghen @ Sep 17th 2008 12:16PM
I think rock band copying rock band is worse than guitar hero copying rock band... The first is lazy the second is good business practice.
ToRo @ Sep 17th 2008 12:46PM
So it's a bad thing to take what made your first game successful and apply to the sequel? And I don't know about you, but the second is even lazier. At least HMX has an excuse for being lazy. With bringing us DLC every week, their bound to have a bump here or there.
What's Activision's excuse? Oh that's right..it's milking a once great franchise to the ground.
VaultICEE @ Sep 17th 2008 7:17PM
Activision should have saw this coming when they bought the IP.
Harmonix make REAL music games from the musicians on the team, while Neversoft made... whored out Tony Hawk games.
Guitar Hero World Tour had to be made eventually if Activision wanted to continue getting huge amounts of money like the cash cow milkers they are.
Gunner McGrath @ Sep 17th 2008 9:39AM
Am I the only one that actually agrees with the nega-review more than I do the actual reviews? I've been a fan of GH and Rock Band since day 1 and bought every game on release. This one I've had for 2 days, played through most of it, and genuinely HATE the track selection. While all the other criticisms of lack of new features are certainly valid, that could all be brushed under the rug pretty quickly if they'd offered up a solid set list.
For instance, what the hell is that Beastie Boys song doing in a game where you play instruments? There's almost no instrumentation at all, and god forbid you pick bass, unless you enjoy pressing a single button at the same time throughout the entire song.
And Guns 'n' Roses.. oh god that's some horrible stuff on every level.
And worst of all.. all the songs that are painful to listen to and/or play are of course epics, while the majority of the decent songs (I've only really enjoyed maybe 3 songs on the disc) are short ones.
I predict that my copy will be up on Goozex within a week, which is really sad. I enjoyed GH Aerosmith more than this.
Xoviet chiK @ Sep 17th 2008 9:50AM
Which three of the eighty-four on-disc songs you maybe enjoyed?
If you don't mind my asking of such a question of course.
Gunner McGrath @ Sep 17th 2008 10:00AM
Upon reviewing the song list I'll admit there are a few gems in here, definitely, and saying there were only 3.. well that just goes to show how skewed my view of the game is based on the awful tracks I've had to play REPEATEDLY before unlocking many of the songs I found more enjoyable.
Awesome:
Foo Fighters “Everlong”
Metallica “Battery”
Mighty Mighty Bosstones “Where’d You Go”
Rise Against “Give it All”
Soundgarden “Spoonman”
Pretty Good:
Billy Idol “White Wedding Pt. I”
Bon Jovi “Livin’ on a Prayer”
Fleetwood Mac “Go Your Own Way”
Jimmy Eat World “The Middle”
Journey “Anyway You Want It”
Kansas “Carry On Wayward Son”
Lit “My Own Worst Enemy”
Pearl Jam “Alive”
Smashing Pumpkins “Today”
Social Distortion “I Was Wrong”
The Offspring “Come Out & Play (Keep ‘em Separated)”
On the other hand, some songs make me wish I could return an opened game for my money back rather than support the company that thinks these are good choices for a music game:
Beastie Boys “So Whatcha Want”
Beck “E-Pro”
Guns N’ Roses “Shackler’s Revenge”
Interpol “PDA”
I don't remember the rest of the songs I didn't like because, well, I didn't like them. These were just the ones that stuck out because I've been forced to play them a bunch of times and get very sad at the thought, or in the case of GNR i was just appalled that Axl would taint the name of his former glory with that drek.
I know there were other songs I hated equally
Xoviet chiK @ Sep 17th 2008 10:12AM
You deserve a slap on the wrist for failing to mention Silversun Pickups' "Lazy Eye" in the awesome / good lists.
Otherwise, thank you for elaborating :D
AwesomeTown @ Sep 17th 2008 10:21AM
With music games, it really just comes down to the track selection. If you don't like it, then you won't want to play it. That's the beauty of the DLC, though, it can be much more of a niche. You can get what you want. The main disc will have many more universally appreciated songs. I think a lot more people would love this track selection than don't. You are probably, sadly, in the minority. But hell, probably no one is gonna like all the tracks anyway.
P.S. I do agree with you about the Beastie Boys track, but not about Interpol. Rock Band needs MORE Interpol.
Kersh @ Sep 17th 2008 10:28AM
Why did you buy the game if you 'genuinely hate' the track list? Hasn't the complete listing been known for a few weeks now? Or is that just GH:WT?
Gunner McGrath @ Sep 17th 2008 10:36AM
First ask yourself how many of those tracks you or I had actually heard before. Maybe half. Did I know I'd hate those songs? No, I never heard them before (with the exception of Beastie Boys in passing). I saw a smattering of songs by favorite artists ("Where'd You Go" and "Give It All" hold special personal significance for me) and some old 80's favorites that everyone enjoys singing along to.
But when you get into the nitty gritty of the game, not only are a lot of these songs I'd never heard patently awful (and certainly there will be some disagreement when it comes to taste), but by removing the regular single-player instrument mode and giving us tour only, they've removed the most direct way to play through the track listing and give ourselves an opportunity to play the tour mode with all the songs unlocked for our playing pleasure.
In all honesty, the feature they're really lacking is the ability to remove certain songs from your playlist, at least for the sake of the mystery setlists. I was happy to delete about 5 of the RB1 tracks after they'd copied to my hard drive but the rest are all at least tolerable. In RB2 I have a distaste for a much larger selection of the tracks.
