The PlayStation Blog recently announced that PlayStation Network cards are now available in $20 and $50 denominations at national movie rental chain Blockbuster. Cards can also be picked up at Meijer Superstore, Speedway, Pamida and ... AAFES. We actually had to look that last one up and learned the acronym stands for: Army & Air Force Exchange Service. Calling the press inquiry line, we were informed by a man, who called us "sir" (totally different than what we're used to being called!) that describing it as a "military retailer is perfectly acceptable."
Jeff Rubenstein of PS Blog writes on the site that more stores should be added in the "coming weeks and months." Hey, GameStop might be a good chain to sell those cards in -- we hear it's doing well.

I doubt Sony want to give those assholes at Gamestop any more incentive to plug their used games racket on people.
Or that Gamestop don't want people buying things online with those cards as it accelerates their inevitable demise.
Gamestop are just assholes, is what i'm sayin'.

Companies are naturally nefarious...They want to grind your money dry and annoy the hell out of you...
Gamestop will shrink to a spec one day...
But at least Americas Economy is collapsing thanks to the fall of those banks. Anarchy!!....

GameStop doesn't carry them because they require activation at the register, a way to prevent shoplifting because Sony wants them prominently displayed (see the guy holding $140 worth in the picture, I don't the bought that much). Since GameStop doesn't have the ability to activate cards at registers, the vendor can't ship them to the store. (A sony rep lives in my apartment building).
Joe: You argument is kind of weak. Why would GameStop not carry the Sony cards but still sell Microsoft and Wii points?
LaVat: You're absolutely right about the economy and GameStop losing it's place in the market, but that's in at least twenty years. Once a company has enough capital, it takes a long time for them to fall. And GameStop is one of the few companies that is doing exceptionally well in this economy. Becuase they do grind your money.

Where have you guys been, Meijer has had them for a long time now. In fact, that were the only place I ever saw them.

I'm surprised you didn't have to look up Pamida. I've only seen one in my life, and it was in a town well off the beaten path.

There's 2 Pamidas within 10 miles of my hometown. They usually can be found in rural towns that don't have more than 5,000 residents. Basically, they jump on any town that Wal-Mart hasn't moved in on.

:) AAFES basically runs everything retail wise on military bases. They sell games and consoles at the Base Exchange or BX, sometimes a Power Zone if your lucky to have one. However the last base I lived on had a poor section of DS games, I cried everytime I looked at it, not even pokemon!!!

The AAFES here in Korea is good about getting games when they first come out but once out of stock you better off ordering from Amazon.com.

Like I said in my post below... They won't sell.
But hey, the CGES I work at, though a tiny store, actually has a somewhat good selection of games. You have your basics like Mario Kart and stuff... but then you have the titles you've never heard of like "Theme Park Game 2".
Otherwise they only send us new games like once every 2 months.

I actually work at an AAFES here in Germany. It is located on all american military installions worldwide. We sell all sorts of things at my store, half of it being "Electronics" including two small aisles of video games. The only problem is that we are overseas and don't receive most new games until 3-4 weeks after their stateside release. We do receive the "major" games day and date, such as Madden and Halo.

I was stationed at Luke AFB and their video game section was terrible. Before that though, I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall but always went to RAF Lakenheath's BX. Their video game section used to suck ass before they remodeled the place back in 2004-2005 but when it opened back up, they expanded the area and it was sweet. I used to always love that when you couldn't find a certain game, AAFES always had that rare game in stock for some reason.

AAFES usually has people stationed overseas by the balls and they know this. You can either:
A) Go to a local store and pay a lot more thanks to the Euro and/or have your item not be fully compatible with your American junk.
-or-
B) Go to AAFES and be ripped off and/or never find the item you actually want.
I usually bought stuff online but the problem with that is we're at the mercy of the military postal system. I'd have to wait at least a week for most things unless it got lost of course. I don't miss that at all but I'd go back to Europe in a heartbeat.

Why is sony being so stupid when it comes to these cards. Just let every store sell them. You don't see microsoft saying what stores can sell their xbox point cards.

I think that's because the psn cards are activated at the register unlike the Live & Wii points cards. Like all those gift cards at you local grocery store.

You have to be effing kidding me. AAFES?!
WHY? I don't get it, I work at a CGES (Coast Guard yeah, but they go through AAFES on a lot of stuff)... and I can tell you right now, if they sent them to our store, we would not be able to sell them.
We have stockpiles of PS3's sitting in our store, and if we're lucky we'll sell one to someone willing to dump their first paycheck on it. If they sent us these it'd just be as bad as all the games we have sitting around. But the number ONE reason why they wont sell is because BARRACKS HAVE NO INTERNET.

I'm not sure how/why, but the Speedway gas stations around my city have had the PSN cards for quite a while now. I had no idea they were so scarce.

I used to be in the military in the Air Force and loved our AAFES stores on the bases I was at. No tax and usually the prices were cheaper on most items.

What's the point of PSN cards? PSN uses real money (not SpaceBucks). I mean I guess they could be useful as gifts, but is there that much demand for it?

These cards are awesome because I can paypal the money to a friend in the US, he sends me the code and then I buy cheap crap off the American Store >:D
