Some lived a Life with PlayStation ... briefly
It appears that someone at Sony proper forgot to drink their morning coffee and accidentally threw the wrong switch, resulting in a handful of lucky insomniacs getting an early glimpse at the PS3's oft-delayed news-and-weather-service, Life with PlayStation. Sony's answer to the Wii's weather and news channels, which utilizes Google data to display real-time data, was originally expected to drop in July before being delayed on a pair of occasions, most recently earlier this month.
According to Sony, the application was posted for public download during testing "temporarily, by mistake," allowing pictures like the one above to be captured and posted online. As for when the app will get a proper release, Sony is only saying that an announcement will be made "shortly." For now, it seems that we'll have to go about getting our news and weather info the old fashioned way: by rolling our chairs over to the computer.

so did anyone happen to actually use it for this brief period of time, if so, how was it?
Maverick Saturn @ Sep 17th 2008 2:06PM
Nobody got a chance, Sony noticed it had been released and within seconds pounced on the end process button as the sirens began to go off.
OMGZORZ, THEY WILLZ SEE OUR SECRET!
Tiptup300 @ Sep 17th 2008 4:24PM
I used another version of it, my window makes a great forecast.
Offtopic: Why is that top right bar still there!? If you're not in HD it's unreadable and if you pay attention the ps3 actually lags really bad when it's active.
SimbaDogg @ Sep 17th 2008 8:29PM
@tiptup
its on, because its on by default. you can turn it off, if you dont see it on yours, you probably turned your "notification bar" off
Maverick Saturn @ Sep 17th 2008 2:05PM
I'm guessing all those people who thought they could finally check if it would be snowing on Monday were in for a suprise when suddenly they were slapped on the wrist.
Naughty rabbit, you can wait :D
Oh the torture!!
chad @ Sep 17th 2008 2:06PM
Sony delays thing so long that by the time that they come out no one gives a crap about them anymore.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 17th 2008 2:07PM
Better than releasing a shitty, bugged-up product earlier and by the time it's been fixed through patches, no one cares anymore.
Or maybe not.
Shagittarius @ Sep 17th 2008 2:18PM
Are you implying that no one will care about the weather by the time this comes out?
The End is Neigh!
chad @ Sep 17th 2008 2:20PM
Who seriously will turn on their ps3 to see what the weather is going to be like. No one I know. Sony just felt the need to directly copy nintendo again.
Duke @ Sep 17th 2008 2:29PM
I'm with shag here. I think people will still care about the news and weather whenever this is released.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 17th 2008 2:31PM
I suppose Sony planning the PS3 to be the one stop machine in the whole living room had nothing to do with its feature to check local news and weather. I know it would be a damn sight faster to start up my PS3 and look than it would to Boot up my PC.
Sony copied nintendo, because they were the first company ever to tell people what the wether was going to be like in the future... right...

Shagi
Nintendo has been offering the same service since the 2006, and yes, is fun for like a week (well, spinning the globe with the remote is fun), but I really don't turn on the Wii to check the weather.
The service I use sometimes is the News with the Globe... thats a very nice feature.

"Who seriously will turn on their ps3 to see what the weather is going to be like."
I think it's more like I'm using the PS3 and I'm wondering what the weather is like outside of my mom's basement, so now I dont have to get my a s s off the couch.
In other words, it's the same people who find this Wii feature useful.
Maverick Saturn @ Sep 17th 2008 2:56PM
Speak for yourself Fernando, I still use my Wii for the news and weather, and if it's not me, its the mother :P
Shagittarius @ Sep 17th 2008 3:01PM
I use my Wii to tell the weather too. Depending on how thick the layer of dust on it is I can generally tell how windy it is.
Duke @ Sep 17th 2008 3:14PM
Zing!

Well done Shag. +1 (golf claps)

LOL first the "storage solution" and now this...
Vidikron @ Sep 17th 2008 4:25PM
The problem with the Wii's weather is that the info i that the current weather is always like half a day old. The other problem is I never turn on my Wii :P
Seriously though, some of you guys miss the point of something like this. No, I don't think most people are going to fire up there PS3 or Wii specifically to check the weather, but that's not really what these things are for. They are for when you are already playing games and happen to wonder what temperature is outside or what the weather will be like tomorrow. They are for convenience. It's like having the time and date shown on your console. It's just information that most people are interested in at random times throughout the day.
Vidikron @ Sep 17th 2008 4:43PM
*the info for the current weather
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 17th 2008 2:07PM
Briefly? So the people that managed to download it can't use it anymore, or what?
Deeznuts420 @ Sep 17th 2008 2:08PM
or turning my head to the left...
FOXHOUND @ Sep 17th 2008 2:08PM
You know... if Flash and Java were fully enabled for the PS3/PSP's internet browser, they could direct people directly to The Weather Channel and all sorts of neat-o-torpedo stuff. :\
Metal_Gear @ Sep 17th 2008 2:13PM
Wow, ego much, since when does your opinion = everyone elses?
I for one think this will be a nifty little app and will hopefully get more people to use Folding@Home.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 17th 2008 2:15PM
That was @chad by the way.
If they rushed Life with Playstation out before it was ready, it would work like this commenting system... in other words... truly naffed up.
Marty @ Sep 17th 2008 2:42PM
You guys only have one chair?
Dirty @ Sep 17th 2008 5:43PM
When its on wheels, why stand up?
Anam @ Sep 17th 2008 2:46PM
When I read the headline, I thought it said "Some lives saved with Playstation... briefly" and thought it was about Folding at Home or whatever.
Now I'm disappointed...
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 17th 2008 3:09PM
Who uses ANY weather service to check the weather "right now"? If it has a forecast feature that can tell me if it's expected to snow overnight so I know that I need to get up early to shovel my driveway before work, that'd be something.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 17th 2008 3:32PM
Ah, just turn on the PS3s 'Auto-shovel on shutdown' feature and it will do it for you...
>_>

Accident? Riiiiight.
Although the thought of Sony coders desperately mashing ctrl+alt+dlt while uttering a constant stream of obscenities does make me chuckle.
