Pokémon Platinum approaches, er, platinum status in Japan
See, the game has sold 967,675 copies in its first two days on Japanese store shelves, which is close to a million, which means that, if Pokémon Platinum were an American music album, it would almost be a platinum record. Once we realized that, the headline just wrote itself. As did this explanatory paragraph ...
Look, Pokémon games are still popular in Japan, all right? That's all we're trying to say here! Sheesh! We need a drink.

Platinum's pretty cool. I've been playing it for a few days now. Waiting till tomorrow now though since I want a Drifloon.
Rocko @ Sep 18th 2008 5:53PM
Oh man, I just spent the last hour reading Bulbopedia about fake pokemon and glitched pokemon, and I decide to visit joystiq to get away from the madness, only to find MORE POKEMON!!!

As Robotic chuck norris would say, That was lame.

I never really understood the love of these games. Not cutting on them, just saying I never felt anything for them. Did many around here enjoy them?
Temidien @ Sep 18th 2008 6:01PM
For me it's the sense of collecting and the nostalgia from playing the old games. I still play Diamond regularly and I'll probably play Pokemon as long as Nintendo puts the games out. It's a formula that's never needed revision and I think that's why it still has a strong following.
Titanium_Orchid @ Sep 18th 2008 6:10PM
I played Pokemon Blue back in the day. Temidien is right, its the RPG/loot thing that makes the series popular. You are always trying to find new Pokemon, or leveling your existing ones for different abilities.
Robotic Earthling @ Sep 18th 2008 6:21PM
The Pokemon games are awesome. Granted, that's coming from someone with a pokemon as his avatar, but they are. The strategy involved in only having 4 moves + the huge variety of pokemon to train/collect are what really sell it for me. If I don't have anything else to play (unlikely) around the time Platinum comes out here, I'll probably get it even though I have Diamond.
Paulmichael @ Sep 18th 2008 6:41PM
I enjoyed it back when I was younger, first with Blue on an old original Game Boy that I got at somebody's garage sale in Big Bear. Then Red and Yellow on GBC, and finally Gold/Silver. Heck, I even played the TGC for a long time, culminating in my eventual lucky draw of the Charizard card from a random booster pack! I'm thinking about trying these new ones out on an emulator, but it's been so long I just might not care about it anymore... I stopped when Celebi was the new rare Pokémon.
Ayrkain @ Sep 18th 2008 5:56PM
Madness? This is POKEMON!
Temidien @ Sep 18th 2008 5:59PM
I can't wait till it makes it stateside. I'm so pumped.
Mr Khan @ Sep 18th 2008 6:06PM
Oddly enough, i am too, having never been pumped about the 3rd-wheel franchise installations
The extra features really make it compelling
syrik zero @ Sep 18th 2008 6:04PM

I'm a big fan of these Platinum games, and perhaps it was because, for some reason, I was expecting more, but I'm very disappointed with Platinum, once again, it's nothing but a cheap re-hash of Diamond and Pearl, if you already own one of them, there's no reason to get this, unless you like ridiculously difficult battles against cheating A.I. opponents.
Do something fresh with these games, please..
Donald @ Sep 18th 2008 6:14PM
The developers can't hear you, there's stacks of 5,000 yen bills stuck in their ears.
zuburi @ Sep 18th 2008 6:18PM
10! 10 commas! ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!
J @ Sep 18th 2008 9:21PM
"unless you like ridiculously difficult battles against cheating A.I. opponents"
OR if you like a whole revamp of good features for both online and ingame shoved right up the ass (read: DS slot)
Vidikron @ Sep 19th 2008 12:57AM
You just now figured out all these Pokemon games are rehashes???
Dragod @ Sep 18th 2008 6:17PM
I always feel like Pokemon games are the only games I can trust to be a good addition to my handheld collection. I always buy them without a second though, unlike most games.
Is it weird that I'm only missing Leaf Green version to have all of the core "versions" of the games?
Dovi @ Sep 18th 2008 6:29PM
Leaf Green is just a remake of Blue/Red so I wouldn't consider it a core game
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 18th 2008 6:34PM
My local Toy r Us have new sealed copies of that game (and I think that is not the Player's Choice version), at $20 dlls.
If you are interested, just send me a message and I can send you the game.

Dragod @ Sep 18th 2008 7:30PM
Bt core, I mean the version games... not the "mystery dungeon" games or any of those.
Jakka(Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 18th 2008 6:22PM
I'm surprised that Ludwig didn't write this news since he is "The Master of Horrible Puns"...
MowDownJoe @ Sep 18th 2008 8:31PM
Yeah. Heck, he would've photoshopped a Pokéball image into the center of that record.
SERIOUSLY! That's a missed opportunity!
ed @ Sep 18th 2008 6:51PM
GRRR! I love pokemon with all my hearts, but I hate it too.
The collection side is fantastic and I've easily pumped 100 hours into Diamond and not beaten the Elite Four yet (trying to get lots more pokemans first and level my current stock up, also:poffins).
But at the same time I'm playing it... hoping that the next gen pokemon game will have better, 3D battle arenas, 3D worldmap so I can see that mofo mountain and waterfall in the background looking spectacular.
Wont get platinum. though it is one of my fave game series going, it's just too soon considering I only just decided to go through the 8th gym today. Though I do love the sound of the new features in Platinum.
Josh @ Sep 18th 2008 10:11PM
i has contributed 1 purchase
Desert Eagle @ Sep 19th 2008 12:22AM
Well, that's pretty much expected, since Japan has lots of folks who like Pokemon. Hell, even the seniors people play those games over there, and for a good reason. Collecting and beating the ass of others with cutesy creatures never get old.
I'm definetily getting this game when it comes to this side of the world, for many reasons, one being that it has an FBI-esque officer in the story and the other being that Dawn looks better than on D/P. Hehehe. :P
tacoman @ Sep 19th 2008 6:10AM
I picked up Platinum on launch day, went to see the Giratina movie (turns out you can't get Shaymin with an American game), and signed up for the Pokemon World Championship today (you get a gold-colored Milotic for participating) and next week the Secret Key that unlocks the room with the items that change Rotom's form will be available. I'm not even that big of a fan, but they certainly know how to get their hooks in you.
BillyBob @ Sep 21st 2008 3:44PM
i do love pokemon games and i cant wait till this one!!!!!
