With its epic voice-over and claims that you've pretty much never played football like this ever, the latest trailer for Tecmo Bowl Kickoff nearly makes the game seem like it will have you saving the universe. Of course, unless you squint to catch the actual gameplay on the bottom screen, you'd also think it's comprised entirely of cinematics.
Still, it's nice to see this level of production being lavished on a handheld treatment of the bona fide classic, even if it is a bit extreme ... as extreme as pint-sized pigskin can get, at least. Oh, and we think you have played a football game like this before: the original Tecmo Bowl. (That's not a bad thing.)

I love how this trailer is basically killing the dreams of many aspiring football players.
"You're never going to throw like this... You're never going to catch like this..."

NFL license?
It's just not the same if I can't dominate offenses as LT of the Giants, or bust up defensive lines as Bo of the Raiders...it's just not the same dammit!

EA holds exclusive rights to the NFL License, man. You should know that. However, the game does let you edit the name and emblem of every team and the name of every player, so nothing stopping you from making the Jets or the Giants or whatever.

Ugh, I do know that. It was a point in the form of a question. If techmo doesn't have the license, then it cannot come close to any of the former techmo games, period.

MTV.com are idiots: "Hands down, the best Tecmo Bowl since the original"...? I guess Tecmo Super Bowl and TSB II were piles of shit, then, right?

Yeah, I thought the first one was the worst.
Tecmo Super Bowl was where it really got started.

As long as my best friend can't choose his defense based on looking at my controller to see what offense I choose...

Yeah I have to agree with the above. I thought the original Tecmo Bowl was the worst. Tecmo Superbowl was far superior. When the idea of updating Tecmo Bowl came up, why not Tecmo Superbowl? Probably couldnt use the word Superbowl though..

And here I was hoping the tag led somewhere..

Looks a LOT like Tecmo Super Bowl. And that, my friends, is a good thing. I'm not much of a sports gamer, but I played so much of that game back in the day that I think it may have outpaced my hours playing RPGs. I literally went through seasons with _every_ team, including the then-woeful Patriots.
And besides, in that game, KC Chiefs = win. Okoye was a beast.

Nobody beats the Raiders: Jackson, Allen, Ronnie Lott, Tim Brown, etc. Using Howie Long, your opponent literally CAN'T get any plays to work.

Yeah, the Raiders were mean, too. But their passing attack was below average. The Chiefs had Derrick Thomas, too, which was probably the best linebacker in that game outside of Lawrence Taylor.
Statistically, the Raiders are probably slightly better. But I never enjoyed using them much, for some reason.
The Oilers, on the other hand, were lots of pass-happy fun. Just don't put Lorenzo White in there, he's a fumble machine!
