Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories for PS2 coming Dec. 2 to US
At least one of those GameStop eXpo rumors turned out to be true: Square Enix has confirmed in a press release that Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, a PlayStation 2 remake of the Game Boy Advance title, is coming to the US on December 2.
The PS2 version has been available in Japan since March 2007. It will retail here for $30 and includes voiceovers from Haley Joel Osmont and David Gallagher. As a friendly reminder, PS2 titles are only going to work on select older PS3 models.

Excellent.
Now once they get that gastly DS game back on a Sony platform, I will finally have a complete KH series.
Thanatos @ Sep 19th 2008 2:27PM
Sony Fanboy Much?
Ive always wanted to play Kingdom Hearts but never owned a PS2 :( I had forgot about Chain of Memories might have to try and get it for my DS.
dark_inchworm @ Sep 19th 2008 3:03PM
If it's ghastly on the DS, why do you wanna play it on a Sony platform?
Douche.
koehler83 @ Sep 19th 2008 3:28PM
For the same reason I'd rather play Chain of Memories on PS2 rather than GBA.
PIXELS!
dark_inchworm @ Sep 19th 2008 3:57PM
I know what *you* meant, but I believe you misinterpreted me. If graphics make a "ghastly game," please GTFO.
koehler83 @ Sep 19th 2008 5:00PM
Im sure the game will be great, which is why I indeed want to play it.
I, however, don't want to play it with a pair of binoculars.
mazza_man @ Sep 19th 2008 5:47PM
What the fridge to binoculars have to do with anything?!
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Sep 19th 2008 9:14PM
I have horrible eyes. The only colors I can tell apart with any degree of reliability are red and green. I need glasses or contacts to see more than five feet in front of me.
I have absolutely no problem gaming with the PSP or DS.
theclaw @ Sep 20th 2008 1:27AM
I agree. PSP has better graphics.
Courtney @ Sep 19th 2008 2:24PM
Shame that they didn't also make this a PSN game. Seems like if you're going to go to the work to re-make a title, you could at least put it on your premier system. Also, being able to announce a KH game for the PSN would make for good publicity.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Sep 19th 2008 5:07PM
That would require Square-Enix to put EFFORT into localizing this. It was a PS2 game to begin with, so why bother changing that?
kacex @ Sep 20th 2008 4:39AM
The only thing is that not every PS3 can support the PS2... If they wanted it to get on the PSN they should have made it for PS3 directly...
wesley johnson @ Sep 19th 2008 2:28PM
will kingdom hearts ever go next-gen? that'd be reason enough for me to get a PS3.
Mr Khan @ Sep 19th 2008 2:30PM
The future of Kingdom Hearts is one of great debate. Those who assume off-hand that it'll go to PS3, those who assume it'll go multiplatform like everything else, and those who are betting on a Wii-exclusive
I myself bet on the latter, if only because the target market is the same, and if they worked it right, it could be a perfect "my first RPG" for a lot of the expanded audience people.
wesley johnson @ Sep 19th 2008 2:47PM
i'd love a 360 version but whatever a future installment releases on would probably heavily influence the next system i buy.
TheOverlord#2 (Playing: SMRPG, SMG, & Okami) @ Sep 19th 2008 3:07PM
Me too. Kingdom Hearts is one of my favorite series and I really hope it takes the FF13 route and goes multiplatform.
I know i'm getting a 360 eventually, but PS3 I wouldn't know.
(Or...it could come to the Wii with minor waggle, y'know :P)
ComicShaman @ Sep 19th 2008 4:16PM
"I myself bet on the latter, if only because the target market is the same, and if they worked it right, it could be a perfect "my first RPG" for a lot of the expanded audience people."
In which case, it would be fairly significant redefinition of the series. Kingdom Hearts has thus far not been a dumbed-down "my first RPG" sort of series. On the contrary, the target market appears to be traditional JRPG fans. It is a core gamer's game, not at all made for neophytes.
My bet would be either a PS3 exclusive or a multiplatform with the X360. A Wii version seems less likely to me.
Mr Khan @ Sep 19th 2008 4:24PM
"my first RPG" wasn't meant in terms of dumbing down. It was really meant in the sense that you're showing new audience people a game where you can play as and alongside Disney characters. Throw in some co-op and you could get an RPG that families could play together
Still the core KH game, but advertised as a family title
The fact of Wii owning Japan is going to help, too, unless Sony and/or Microsoft make an exclusivity bid (very likely, considering Microsoft's recent dealings with Square Enix)
Flame @ Sep 19th 2008 4:25PM
Idk. I can see KH3 being a multiplat because of the SE presidents recent deal. Also i can see it being a PS3 exclusive due to the fact that Tetsuya Nomura is a PS fanboy. SE president im sure would like to keep his best worker but on the same note, make more sales. We'll never know until they announce it.
ComicShaman @ Sep 19th 2008 5:14PM
"Throw in some co-op and you could get an RPG that families could play together .Still the core KH game, but advertised as a family title."
Okay... so let me see if I understand you. You anticipate that KH3 will be a Wii exclusive that is both a "family-friendly, my first RPG" title that will be geared to the expanded audience AND a core-gamer RPG at the same time.
Yes, well, that would be a neat trick. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Sep 19th 2008 9:22PM
"Kingdom Hearts has thus far not been a dumbed-down "my first RPG" sort of series."
It was never a deep experience to begin with you know.
DjShinnosuke @ Sep 19th 2008 2:47PM
Now, if we could get a special bundle with all the Kingdom Heart Final Mix (1&2) in English i will be the most happy person in the world.
Who knows, something like the 20years anniversary of Metal Gear Solid.
Wonderflex @ Sep 19th 2008 2:36PM
"As a friendly reminder, PS2 titles are only going to work on select older PS3 models."
Yeah, after my launch PS3 got the Yellow Light of Death I was really worried they would ship me a new model - I'm rather thankful they didn't, because with new games still coming out there is still quite a bit of use in having a PS2 built-in.
CJLopez @ Sep 19th 2008 4:51PM
And this is why I kept my slim PS2
umm....hello??? @ Sep 19th 2008 2:40PM
it'll work on mine! I'll be happy to pick this game up.
erico316 @ Sep 19th 2008 3:25PM
hmmm how is the graphic and gameplay?why give us a game that takes place between 1 and 2.and why not just give us a part 2 to chain memory and add the remake as part of a bundle.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Sep 19th 2008 4:09PM
Oh don't worry. Knowin Squenix, they probably have plans to make 10 games that take place between KH1 and KH2.
TheOverlord#2 (Playing: SMRPG, SMG, & Okami) @ Sep 19th 2008 8:04PM
KH: Coded is basically that, as in, you go back to worlds from KH2.
Basically COM for Cellphones.
Matt Dusza @ Sep 19th 2008 3:23PM
for 30 bucks, ill pick it up. And for the record i see the series staying on the playstation brand for full titles. I just think square thinks the wii is pretty useless. I mean the ds sells like billions everywhere so thats a no brainer, but the wii and an action rpg? do i need to bring up soul calibur legends?
and thantos i feel sorry for you for never owning a ps2
ComicShaman @ Sep 19th 2008 4:18PM
This is sweet news. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. I'm definitely going to pick this one up.
Phil @ Sep 19th 2008 4:32PM
*Sigh* You couldn't just give us BOTH KH2: Final Mix Plus AND Re:CoM could you SE? God forbid, you re-release the game, cause you know, you don't believe in remakes of games.
*glares annoyingly at the multitude of Final Fantasy games re-released onto the GBA, DS and many other consoles*
This is bullshit, I don't care if we're getting it at a discounted price, give us BOTH Final Mix Plus AND Re:Chain of Memories, there's no excuse other than potentially costs and laziness...
And Square Enix, if you expect me to believe you don't have the cash to produce an american version of Final Mix Plus, you're SOOOOOOOOO not gonna get that.
capt_carl @ Sep 19th 2008 5:20PM
Final Mix and Final Mix+ now, plsthx. This shall be an acceptable sacrifice however.
343 Guilty Fart @ Sep 19th 2008 5:35PM
Kingdom Hearts? More like Kingdom Farts!! Eh, eh, anyone, anyone?
/sarcasm
J-Boogie @ Sep 19th 2008 5:43PM
I agree with Phil. This is some rickety bullcrap. Not giving us KH2 Final Mix Plus is just insulting. Releasing the bonus game over here for 30 bucks is DOUBLY insulting.
Phil @ Sep 19th 2008 8:08PM
I don't know that I have such a huge problem with that but...
When game companies like Atlus are providing a LOT more bonus content with the ORIGINAL releases of their games AND including it in the AMERICAN releases, to see Square Enix pulling this 'fast one', so to speak, on us is insulting to the fans.
I would pay 40 or 50 bucks, MAYBE even 60 if they released KH2:FM+ with EVERYTHING that the JP release included. The Re:CoM game, the Final cut of Kingdom Hearts 2 and that Another Report book or whatever the hell it was called.
Sure, call me a fan all you want but THAT IS WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT. The fans, like myself, WANT EVERYTHING, not HALF of the original content provided.
Oh, and as a fairly die hard fan of KH2, I think Chain of Memories was really, the most poor of the series. Not because it was on the GBA, but because it was crystal clear the gameplay was not as refined as it could've been.
The story was fine however, it did what it promised and that was provide some middle ground to satisfy fans until the release of KH2. I just got REALLY fed up with the gameplay, which didn't get refined until a recent release known as The World Ends With You.
I don't expect most fans to be so easily sucked into buying this... With this series, I come for the story and easy, light show style of gameplay it provides. It's a typical RPG, with honestly no originality whatsoever.
It has a mildly different story, but nothing else. Much like how there are guilty pleasure TV shows, Kingdom Hearts is to me, a guilty pleasure of roleplay gaming. :P
Covarr @ Sep 19th 2008 6:18PM
This has to happen AFTER I lost my job. Ugh.
Gewurztraminer says: Shinkuu Gadouken! @ Sep 19th 2008 6:58PM
While Kingdom Hearts was the last straw that made me cave and get a PS2 (FFX, MGS2, & GT3 helped), I can't say that a KH3 exclusive (or FFXIII, MGS4, GT5) is enough to convince me to make that leap to the PS3 just quite yet.
Geist @ Sep 20th 2008 3:06AM
I recommend taking a look at the upcoming title White Knight. It and Heavy Rain are two of the strongest reasons as to why I'm going to purchase a PS3.
Jumpy Jack @ Sep 20th 2008 12:51AM
I'm a huge Kingdom Hearts fan! I love all the games and I think the story is great! With that said I don't think I will be buying this game, unless they bundle it with KH2:Final Mix+. To be frank I think this is a rip-off. Why is it that I have to pay $30 for half the experience people in Japan are getting? plus this is a remake that has technically been out in the market for over a year! It should be a given that there is a price reduction. But, as I said before, for the content/experience this game is offering $30 isn’t a price cut, it’s a scam. Also, I certainly hope that SE will not "decide to release KH:FM+ due to fan out cry" later in 2009 for another $30.
No money for the EA of japan! ;)
saintaqua @ Sep 20th 2008 12:07PM
Yay!! I hated the GBA version, it was fun, but a pain.
Now I will enjoy it!!!
I hope KH3 is announced at TGS now!!
Sansphillipthe3rd @ Sep 20th 2008 2:16AM
When you guys play this game on the PS2 you will realize it is more of a sequel to the Kingdom Hearts game play than KH2 was. I should know I beat it with both Sora and Riku on the japanese version. I'm really glad I'll get to beat it again but this time I'll be able to read and understand what I am doing.
Russell Dady @ Sep 20th 2008 7:41AM
And when will this be released in Europe? Now that you're translating it for the US, Square Enix, you really have no excuse.
xeleion @ Sep 20th 2008 1:14PM
AUGH NO FINAL MIX+?

I hate you, Nomura. HATE!
Inuhanyou @ Sep 20th 2008 8:45PM
Stop whining you people..you KNEW that KH final mix didn't come out anywhere else but Japan, why would you expect otherwise for KH2 final mix?
Think once in a while would ya?
Tetsuya said he'd do everything he could when he commented that he was asked about bringing it statside..obviously he coulden't.
beginers luck2 @ Sep 26th 2008 3:41AM
what about in Europe? when does it release over here?
Som-Kun @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:30PM
GOD I HATE FANBOYS!!!!!!
anyway. as a KH affictionado. i find it reasonable to say that master Nomura is doing what he can to get us the FM set but unfortunately, Squenix has become a major company causing the creation of my least favorite thing on earth... The Board. an all powerful group of people who control the entire system. luckily, we have the most influential person on our side, Squenix's golden angel Nomura, there is no way that they will give him up. plus he prefers the sony systems which are the only systems i own (except my little sisters ds (for 358/2) WOOT) so i have the inclination to think that it will be for the ps3 and maybe the other two systems. anyway, i think my mom is buying re:CoM for cristmas (woot for being underage)
Darkside @ Oct 24th 2008 12:27AM
does anyone know if it'll be comming to Australia?
Jannick @ Dec 5th 2008 11:32AM
