PlayStation Home Manager: PS3 firmware 2.5, Home 1.0 in October
A PlayStation Home beta participant with access to a restricted PlayStation Forums thread has passed along a potential release month -- October -- for the next major PlayStation 3 firmware update (v2.50), PS3 Fanboy reports. The date was suggested by Home manager "TedTheDog" who clarified, "late October is my guess." The update will supposedly include a bug fix for freezing and network errors currently affecting Home users.
Ted (just "Ted" is okay, right?) also hints that Home v1.00 could coincide with firmware v2.50's release -- Home is currently at v0.98. Common sense, while not always a part of Sony's repertoire, tells us that Home 1.0 is the version that goes public -- we'll see. We should note that the Home beta was further expanded today, supporting the possibility of a public release next month.

Eh, I wish NXE would come out faster...I fucking hate M$(Yeah I went there!) for releasing two updates a year - then cutting it down to one because they "feel like it".
Badboy1979 @ Sep 19th 2008 3:29PM
I'm leaning towards believing the reason they're only releasing one update this year is because it's probably I bigger development undertaking than both updates we received last year ... more so than it just being "because they feel like it". But that's just me.
On topic with the post, the customization features in Home look pretty interesting and I can't wait for it to be available in order to learn more details on everything.
Dirty @ Sep 19th 2008 3:46PM
"m$" can go ahead and only do 1 update, as long as they continue to add things that are actually use full, such as netflix. Considering last console cycle updates didnt even exist, they are doing an ok job in my book.
Matt @ Sep 19th 2008 4:19PM
jakka- why do u ""hate"" MS for releasing 1 or 2 updates per year??
honestly to me it cuts down on the time spent downloading and running the installs.
and yes the ps3 releases updates more often at least 6 per year, however that is because each update is trying to get closer to the MS experience IMO.. like the last update was for trophies, in game music, in game ps button options, etc... those are all things MS already has, therefore there are no MS updates needed.
u realize the fall update is a complete overhaul of the xbox live experience?
instead of releasing an update a few months that added the avatars or some things, they are releasing 1 total overhaul.
Duke @ Sep 19th 2008 4:28PM
Matt, he doesn't hate MS. He hates M$. It's totally different. Whenever someone says "M$" you know right off the bat their logic is gimped.
Jakka(Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 19th 2008 6:01PM
@ Matt
You make me sound like a PS3 fanboy bashing MS.And anybody who's been here enough should know that I'm pretty much anti-Sony due to a bunch of hypocrites they are.
@ Duke
...ignored. That MS was a joke.
@ Dirty & Badboy
I know ALL OF THIS STUFF.And while two major updates aren't a problem for me, the "overhaul" can get annoying getting used to and be a real clusterfuck for some time. And still, I'd rather receive it all in small chunks than turn on my console and scream "OMG WTF BQQ ALL THE COLOURS WHERE DID THE BUTTONS GO!?" because of the tons of new features.
Also the fact that we only get two updates a year and MS cancelled one is a kick in the balls regardless.
zuburi @ Sep 19th 2008 10:09PM
"..And anybody who's been here enough should know that I'm pretty much anti-Sony.."
Oh my God, are you Jakka? THE Jakka?
What kind of a world do you live in where you think you should be recognized and your opinion automatically recalled because you're a poster on a gaming blog? If you want to be an internet celebrity that badly, go youtube a video of yourself drinking your own pee or something.
Jakka(Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 20th 2008 8:44AM
@ zuburi
Way to miss the point.Don't quote me out of context next time.
I don't expect to be a celebrity. All I did was note that Matt's comment was like telling Fernando about how great the Wii when he would say...mention data storage issue.
And to answer you: Yes, if you spend enough time looking at the comments you're bound to use the working neurons in your brain and develop a general understanding of who's in Nintendo's(Fernando,Samfish),Sony's(John,Serpiente and Hyams to a lesser degree) and Microsoft's(Azure and Me - but only because at $600 pricetag Sony can kiss my ass!) camp.Precisely to avoid situations like these.
Matt @ Sep 20th 2008 2:07PM
jakka- you said it:
"i fucking hate M$(Yeah I went there!) for releasing two updates a year - then cutting it down to one because they "feel like it".
i was asking why you feel that way?
i didnt relate you to the ps3
where does the ps3 cost $ 600.00 US dollars?
i bet if the ps3 costs $ 600 there then the 360 cost more there than in america too.
dude i like the 360 console much more than ps3 and you all have probably seen on this site. i got in arguements with some ps3 fans for no reason and have since apologized because that was immature of me.
but come on the ps3 is worth more money than the 360 for many reasons, such as HD movie player, the console should last a lot longer, and other tech.
its one thing IMO to say the ps3 doesnt offer many great exclusive games that you like, but i feel the ps3 is worth every penny spent, just like the 360.
Hyams @ Sep 19th 2008 3:24PM
Wow, this is kind of weird. We've got Home and LBP coming just around the corner, and Killzone 2 is within sight.
All the things Sony have been talking about for ages are finally coming round.
Let's hope they don't disapoint, I guess.
Dirty @ Sep 19th 2008 3:50PM
It will be nice to use if for something other than Blu-ray movies (I'm watching heros season 2 right now).
Im keeping my expectations low for Killzone 2. Seriously... you can polish a turd... but its still a turd. Killzone one was lame.
I do look forward to home, especially a trophy case, that will be sweet.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 19th 2008 3:59PM
If your not playing games on your PS3, whats a Trophy case going to do for you? Unless there is a 'watch all over Heroes' Trophy? >_>
Hyams @ Sep 19th 2008 4:16PM
The gameplay of Killzone 2 is more like COD4's, rather than Killzone 1's. COD4 isn't exactly what I would call a turd. ;) The multiplayer details in KZ2 sound really nifty too.
If you can't find a game to play on the PS3, I recommend: Uncharted, R&C, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, or Folklore. (I'm assuming you've already played MGS4.) If you've only got a little money, try downloading PJ Monsters or Eden, or perhaps give Super Stardust a go.
C'mon, it's silly to have that $400 machine and not use for it anything but movies. Buy a couple more games for it. =)
atrimus @ Sep 19th 2008 4:18PM
@Metal_Gear
don't pay attention to Dirty. nowadays it's expected (even encouraged, by some) to rag on the PS3 every chance you get, even if you are a closet fan of the system.
Hyams @ Sep 19th 2008 4:20PM
atrimus: I thought that was the Wii? ;)
DangerMouse @ Sep 19th 2008 4:23PM
No, wait, it's the 360
Dirty @ Sep 19th 2008 4:42PM
Im not ragging on the ps3, Im ragging on Killzone. I will admit that my trophy will be pretty empty, but hopefully I will fill it up with some better games coming out and trophys getting more support.
Mostly I havent been playing games on my ps3 because the 360 has had better offerings (also Spore). Ive played most the games that you have listed.
I don't hate the wii, but I love making fun of it (I hope the fanboys out there can appreciate my lighthearted ribbing and the wiis expense.) Ripping on the PS3 just isnt all that fun.
Evan @ Sep 19th 2008 5:01PM
The problem is "Sony have been talking about for ages". Sony couldn't keep the hype levels up for that long, and other titles have stolen the spotlight.
Tasogare @ Sep 20th 2008 10:32AM
@ Hyams
It wasn't silly to buy the PS3 for the blu-ray when it was the ONLY player worth buying AND the cheapest...and that was last Christmas. That thing was very largely a Trojan Horse for the format, and frankly if it wasn't for that, early PS3 sales would've been even more unimpressive than they were.
Matt @ Sep 20th 2008 2:16PM
i bought my ps3 for blu ray at the time and for the fact that i knew good games would be coming sooner or later.
i already owned a 360 at the time and owned a good amount of games. i also had an hdtv and blockbuster movie pass that offers blu ray movies too.
so i decided to buy the cheapest, updating, blu ray player offered that also doubled as a HD gaming device, made by a great electronics company sony, who also makes some great games too.
i did not need to ps3 at that time to play games or a few exclusives that are not "must-own" IMO.
dvd drive drove ps2 sales thats no question.
blu ray has helped the ps3 greatly also.
a lot of people IMO that went shopping for a blu ray player did end up buying a ps3 machine.
syrik zero @ Sep 19th 2008 3:26PM
I don't care how many updates I get a year or what ever. As long as things they say come out do come out in a timely fashion. Home is taking far too long. But, there is nothing I can do but wait anyway.
LordChimp @ Sep 19th 2008 3:36PM
Good, I am getting tired of constantly being disconnected from the servers.
syrik zero @ Sep 19th 2008 3:40PM
I only have one friend with a PS3. I didn't know this was such a common issue. I really thought it was just me. I get disconnected almost every time I start a game, it's lame.
philmcphail (Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 19th 2008 6:46PM
Depends, I had serious problems with my connectivity too until I upgraded my internet's basic package to the most elite package on AT&T(2wire system). I get 99% connectivity now, but thats COULD be your reason. LOL @ syrik yeah, I only have one GOOD friend I see often on my PSN. What's your PSN? I GET SO LONELY :(
Tasogare @ Sep 20th 2008 10:27AM
My PS3 not only frequently disconnects itself, but EVERYTHING else on my network. LOL Sony, you don't need all of my bandwidth just because you're on.
syrik zero @ Sep 20th 2008 4:48PM
My PSN is Syrik_Zero. Feel free to add!
tmmoore_nc @ Sep 19th 2008 3:37PM
I would hope 2.50 also brings quicker loading for the trophies menu and not having to sync up your trophy list every time as well.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Sep 19th 2008 11:55PM
god i thought i was the only one having that problem. it usually takes close a minute for peoples PSN cards to fully load for me and that is just ridiculous. i mean i dont care that much about them that ill wait that long to see a couple numbers.
Titanium_Orchid @ Sep 19th 2008 3:41PM
hehe, two minutes after reading this post I got an email inviting me to the Home Beta
Lavat @ Sep 19th 2008 3:48PM
Bastard...
2 minutes after reading your comment I checked my Email and there was nothing.
Haggard (Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 19th 2008 4:15PM
Only emails I've had all day besides Joystiq comment replies have been from EA support, telling me to go take my Rock Band set back to the shop in Utah it was bought from.
This would be sound advice were it not for the fact I live in Manchester, England.
Duke @ Sep 19th 2008 4:32PM
So in England this thread is about Rock Band 2? Wild!
Titanium_Orchid @ Sep 19th 2008 6:07PM
England doesn't have teleporters yet? We sent you a crate last month.
Haggard (Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 19th 2008 6:33PM
I'm an anti-fanboy, that is to say I squeeze in a crack at Harmonix until they give me a new bass pedal.
And a yacht.
DEEZNUTZ @ Sep 19th 2008 3:43PM
I hope they give us HDMI CEC (AKA Bravia Sync) with the next update. This would make the PS3 the ultimate BD player and I could then sell off the bluetooth remote and go back to one remote.
Will @ Sep 19th 2008 3:48PM
Eww, he uses a 1024 x 768 resolution? That's not much room for your whole screen
ehisforadam @ Sep 19th 2008 3:51PM
Hey man, for non-wide screen monitors 1028x768 is the bomb.
Haggard (Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 19th 2008 4:16PM
Try browsing the web at 1900x1200 - the text and start bar are so tiny you need an electron microscope in front of your monitor.
Will @ Sep 19th 2008 4:57PM
Actually, I do browse the web at 1920x1200.. I game and do everything at this resolution. To be honest it's freaking beautiful, and having this much space really improves productivity. I think the small toolbars and such is really just a matter of preference and also a matter of getting used to it. Changing resolutions always looks ugly for a few hours, but soon you acclimate and appreciate it.
Also, I'm on a dual monitor setup and my second monitor is 1680x1050. Both monitors combined is over four million pixels of space to do photoshopping, web browsing, chatting, or whatever I want. Two monitors is one of the most enjoyable upgrades you can get for your computer.
BarelyFitz @ Sep 19th 2008 4:07PM
If you're assuming that v1.0 is the launch version, the current version 0.98 doesn't necessarily mean we're close to launch. They could go 0.99, 0.100, 0.101, etc. before bumping to 1.0.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 19th 2008 4:21PM
Uh... 0.100 is lower than 0.98, no matter how many zeroes you tack onto the end. What you mean to say is that they could do stuff like 0.981, 0.982, etc.
Hyams @ Sep 19th 2008 4:22PM
No they couldn't. At least not like that. 0.101 is smaller than 0.99, and only slightly bigger than 0.1.
They'd have to go 0.991, 0.992, 0.993, etc.
BarelyFitz @ Sep 19th 2008 4:54PM
Cheese and rice, we're not necessarily talking decimals here. Software versions commonly work like this: MAJOR.MINOR. Each number can just keep increasing. So each time you release you go 0.1, 0.2, ..., 0.9, 0.10, 0.11, etc. So 0.2 is an earlier release than 0.11
Some crazy people do it differently, Wikipedia has a good explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_version
Inect @ Sep 19th 2008 5:31PM
I don't know what your talking about 0.9>0.1 anytime.
Vidikron @ Sep 19th 2008 8:54PM
As crazy as it may sound to some of you, Fitz is actually correct. MAME is a perfect example of this. Behold: http://mamedev.org/oldrel.html
daddycool @ Sep 19th 2008 4:10PM
Yeah, right. This is Sony we're talking about here. Late October? I say early May.
Pudge @ Sep 19th 2008 4:20PM
I'd say "When it's done", cause you know Home comes with a Duke Nukem Forever demo and a Phantom Lapboard.
Seriously, its sad that the new Xbox dash is going to be competing with something that was announced at launch for PS3.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 19th 2008 4:22PM
Home was announced in '07. PS3 launched in '06...
Jarret @ Sep 19th 2008 4:10PM
I'm straining to be excited about this.
