Rumor: Introducing the Xbox Pure [update: it's a hoax]

Update: Looks like this 'rumor' was intended as a contest entry on CheapAssGamer. The contest: create a fake rumor and see if any gaming blogs would pick it up – so, we did. And called it a rumor, ie: something that may or may not be true. This one isn't, so move along.

A tipster at CheapAssGamer claims to have received a document from a source that outlines the Xbox 360 will be renamed to Xbox Pure. Taking this rumor with a grain of salt and running with it for a moment, according to the document the console is also codenamed Xbox Lean as well as Xbox Granite which could point to a newer, smaller Xbox 360 console branded as the Xbox Pure. However, the document could be referring to the next Xbox console.

Of course, the document is suspect for now considering it has no defining Microsoft marks like a company logo or Steve Ballmer's furious developer-loving sweat. Fighting in favor of its legitimacy the tipster claims to have received the document from a source named "GilZ" who supposedly broke the news about HDMI capable Xbox 360 consoles and the Xbox 360 Elite models.

If it was the next Xbox system, they wouldn't say "Xbox360" name change.

If they were really going for a name change, then they should get rid of the 'box' in Xbox, its too restrictive for future technology.

I agree. I seriously doubt they'd do away with the XBOX360 name. This is either

A) a new "slim" model, to be called the XBOX360 Pure
B) a code-name for a new chipset
C) a code-name for the next console, or
D) a hoax

yes. i will concur with McWeen. if you listen the the latest CAGCast (from monday), they kind of made this contest as a joke. i felt it was irresponsible of cheapy and wombat to make such a contest but it also highlights (again) how people take any rumor and post it as some sort of news, regardless of the source.

I don't think it was irresponsible. People need to learn to check sources and facts on the internet because anything can end up being total bullshit by someone trying to attract hits to their site.

Confirmed fake. I guess that's what I get for missing the CAGCast this week. Although to be fair this was marked rumor and that's what this site is for - news and rumors.

Does it still count as a winner if the tipster to X3F was working with the CAG contestant?

Maybe we should have a contest to see who can come up with the best faked rumor photos. Because if this is the best we can come up with, we're totally boned.

What a load a tosh! Why would they call a new console of new version of the console "Pure"?! When there is a fine ATV game coming out soon called... PURE!!

Please notice they posted this under Rumor, and went on to say the document is suspect. Keep in mind its a blog and not a newspaper and most visit this site for anything of Xbox interest, including rumors.

COME ON YOU GUYS ! Reporting rumors is one thing, but this is so bad that its a low for you guys to even print this.

I disagree. Bigger news has been revealed through less reliable sources before and I see no reason for X3F to make any concessions for posting this. They disclaimed it several times.

In the last CAGCast, wombat challenged CAGs to create rumors in their forum and even offered a contest with a prize if any of the rumor got picked up by a major blog.

There just no reason for a name change. As if the first 3 SKU #'s werent enough to confuse people.

Have not read X3F for quite some time because of you Xav and your d-bag comments towards readers of X3F. Saw this on Kotaku and the uproar over there and seeing you guys posted it as well. Of course the only guy who hits Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V for his post gets egg on his face.

xbox360 fanboy has won the contest, coz he posted it as rumor. but kotaku, gizmodo failed coz they posted as something that is true. showing that they post anything they hear without checking sources. so kudos for xbox360fanboy.
