Japanese hardware sales, Sept. 8 - Sept. 14: Infidelity edition

You see, earlier this week, the Japanese hardware sales made headlines outside of the confines of this humble feature. This enraged us -- not towards any particular author who had placed their journalistic toes in our highly specialized waters, but we were rather miffed that fate had snatched our solemn weekly charge from our unassuming hands. If only Enterbrain had not published the report that the Xbox 360 had unceremoniously overtaken the Wii (a report which was expediently contradicted by our source, Media Create), we could have continued our weekly routine of being your exclusive method of fulfilling your sales chart jones.
Sadly, we can't find it within ourselves to pretend that you don't actually know this week's rankings. We know you saw the headlines, and tried to restrain yourself from spoiling your beloved Sunday evening literature. Unfortunately, the part of your brain that causes you to flip to the last page of your Agatha Christie mysteries before you read them, or sneak a peek at the unwrapped Christmas presents nestled under your parents' bed caused you to read on. You cheated on us, is what we're basically trying to say. If we don't answer your calls for a while, it's because we need some time to think about your latest transgression -- and because we probably can't hear our phone over our Dashboard Confessional-infused break-up mixtape.

2600%? And the Wii still beat it? Thats somewhat funny
itbekevin2010 @ Sep 22nd 2008 12:27AM
yes.
Archon @ Sep 22nd 2008 7:43AM
What does the scouter say about this game system's sales figures?
FireAnt360 (GamerTag, Zune 80 and PSN ID but no PS3) @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:00AM
The saying "HOLY SHIT ON A BISCUIT" comes to mind
Si @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:35PM
Who wants to bet a 28,000% drop next week. I bet that won't make headline news on this Xboxlovin blog...
Phantom @ Sep 21st 2008 9:38PM
I don't know , isn't it kinda sad that the 360s rise is 2600% . I know it a good thing for MS , but for such a rise , sales must have been complete crap before ....
Mr Khan @ Sep 21st 2008 9:41PM
Again: Beating Wii doesn't matter to Microsoft, they're accumulating brand recognition, which is all they really care about.
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 9:44PM
Good job MS...build up that brand image.
Then next gen it will truly blow away the competition...especially the next playstation.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 21st 2008 10:02PM
Things could be changing for good because it seems like Microsoft finally found out how to sell in Japan. All they have to do is pump out one mediocre JRPG after another and they'll keep selling. Now..how it took them 8 years to figure that out is beyond me. I could have told them that strategy in a day.
Now the trick is to actually keep some supply coming in so they can do it for more than a week. But well done nonetheless.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Sep 22nd 2008 12:15AM
AzureKnight, you actually think being a MS fanboy is so much better than being a Sony one?
I wonder where you where when the PS1 and PS2 were doing so good. Its a shame that Sony had to fire a massively large bullet in its leg with the PS3 though.
I wonder how things would have turned out if Sony released the PS3 with games on DVDs for $400 and retailed an SKU that could play Blu-Ray movies for $500/600, that would have been far better.
You've never really said why you hate Sony so much? My guess is your pissed at that white PSP billboard ad back in 2005 but I dunno what goes on in your head.
Its hilarious you think there's so many Sony fanboys here when there aren't. You could pick better places to asstroll.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 22nd 2008 12:45AM
He calls everyone who disagrees with him a sony fanboy, so basically he thinks 95% of joystiq are all sony fanboys.
j.howlett @ Sep 21st 2008 9:42PM
i didn't read those other articles, i may have glanced at a headline or two but you can't blame a man for looking.
jfrdricks @ Sep 21st 2008 10:26PM
Some would consider Tales of Vesperia not a mediocre RPG
Pip @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:06AM
Yeah, Vesperia is getting quite decent reviews across the board. The thing is, JPRGs for the most part have always gotten "mediocre" scores with a few exceptions here and there. Tastes in Japan are quite different, and JRPGs that get 70s in the USA, might actually be close to a perfect 10 in their eyes.
DangerMouse @ Sep 21st 2008 9:51PM
The PS3 is still barley beating the PS2. Pathetic.
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 10:00PM
That's next gen for you...
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 21st 2008 10:04PM
just to remind you azure before you say something stupid, besides the 2 recent weeks here the ps2 was outselling the 360 every week by a sizeable margin. So be careful what you say.
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 10:13PM
AND your point is tmac?
Did MS create the ps2?
NO.
Now is the 360 beating the original xbox? Pretty damn sure it is...
So if you want to compare then compare the right things you arrogant ahole.
Wii to Gamecube
360 to Original xbox
ps2 to psTRIPLE
Clearly the playstation is doing the worse in that situation...
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 21st 2008 10:17PM
That my friends is the biggest "covering my ass" statement I've ever seen someone do. All you do is trash sony and say how much the 360 is better, so when I trap you in a corner you say that. Well ok, I'll play your game.
*clears throat* Alright, well besides these couple recent weeks the ps3 has also outsold the 360 by an even larger margin. So don't gloat too much over 1 week.
WRE @ Sep 21st 2008 10:19PM
TheAzureKnight,
I see what you're saying, but that's not exactly fair. Since they don't really sell GameCubes or Xboxes anymore, there's really no basis for comparison.
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 10:24PM
LMAO...trap me in a corner? HOW?
What on Earth make a reasonable person compared the last gen console of one company to the next gen console of ANOTHER company?
Okay tmac...what a load of bs...
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 10:28PM
One last point...
Okay tmac since your sony fanboy self wants to bring up the normal sales every month.
Yes the ps3 beats the 360 most of the time in Japan. But what are the numbers?
If I remember correctly it's usually the ps3 selling around 9000 units or so while the 360 sells about 2,500 if MS is lucky.
Alright so assuming you agree with that premise the ps3 is beating the 360 by about 6,500. That's. I don't know how you can call that spectacular when sony's home is Japan just like the Wii. Yet the Wii is clearly beating that ass up when it comes to sales by consistently selling around 25,000 units each month.
If the ps3 were selling in those levels while the 360 lagged far behind at 2,000 I'd care.
But as it is the ps3 is barely beating it's long abandoned brother and that is quite pathetic.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 21st 2008 10:30PM
Alright I'll try to explain it so even you can understand. When you agree with someone that it's pathetic that the ps3 is barely outselling the ps2, then is it not MORE pathetic that for every week except 2 or 3 that a next-gen system (specially the one you support so much, it just adds to the irony) is getting beat down by the ps2? That's why I said, don't gloat too much over a week.
DangerMouse @ Sep 21st 2008 10:32PM
Sony is still riding on the PS2's success, while wanting the PS3 to flourish at the same time. Unfortunately, they can't have it both ways. Nintendo and Microsoft dropped support on their old consoles for the most part when their new systems rolled out. But they didn't have much of a choice, though. That's not Sony's only problem, but it's a big part of it.
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 10:36PM
No it's not since the 360 is at all related to the ps2. As in the ps3 should be slamming the ps2 because they're both from sony and sony should is offering a product that should be a big enough evolution in the playstation line that it sells significantly better than the previous model.
So no it's not pathetic for the 360 at all no matter how it's doing compared to the ps2. Sorry but I just don't see your pov on that. I think you're just looking as usual to start a fight like the racist pig ninja.
Goodnight everyone else.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 21st 2008 10:36PM
Ok I gotta wrap this up fast here cause I'm losing too much brain cells.
First, I'm not trying to turn this into a fanboy war unlike you. I'm happy that the 360 did good this week, even though it's only because of another JRPG (I'm criticizing the japanese and their taste here, NOT the 360)
Second, you're confusing the ps2 with the xbox 1. The ps2 is still supported by a large number of companies, specially in Japan.
Third, when the weekly sales in Japan top out at around 30k for consoles then yes regularly beating another system by 7-8k a week is a decent number not including the fact that the PS3 is more expensive than the 360 and has almost no rpg's for the japanese to play.
Koopaknight29 - (Nintendo Loyalist) @ Sep 21st 2008 10:39PM
The only thing pathetic I see here is you tmacair.
That and the fact that the Wii is _still_ winning after all is said and done.
Kudos to Microsoft, though. I am impressed.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 21st 2008 10:43PM
I'm sorry but you cracked me up pretty good there. I'd respond, but to be honest I can't take anyone with "nintendo loyalist" in their name seriously specially if they know what I do here. I wouldn't expect you to agree with anything I say.
WRE @ Sep 21st 2008 10:54PM
While I normally think that he deserves it, you guys are attacking tmac for no reason. He's absolutely right this time, and if he's right we should probably agree with him so that when he's wrong we can point it out without sounding like assholes.
jackbauer @ Sep 21st 2008 11:17PM
oh ma gah everyone shut the fuck up! who cares about sales! what relevance do they have to your personal life! do you work for these companies or in marketing?!! what do you want to do? win an argument to prove that you are better than the other person! all these talk is useless! nothing to achieve, you never will be as bad ass as jack bauer!
jimmygotsmack @ Sep 21st 2008 11:34PM
It seems to me tmac was the aggressor this time. After what knight said, which had little to nothing to do with 360 sales.
Also, something about an earlier post between the two, I really don't care.
Hala Madrid!! (Madrileno hasta la muerte!) @ Sep 21st 2008 11:57PM

"psTRIPLE"? Is that supposed to be one of those clever insult things like "microsux"? If so then thats a thinker right there.
Evan @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:24AM
It's simple - the PS3 is not delivering enough of the games that the Japanese really want.

Will the DS ever be stopped? That thing is insane.
Wiinterfang @ Sep 21st 2008 10:14PM
Not if it keeps those Pokeymans coming up.
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 10:00PM
This is all good for MS and everything but they cannot just rely on RPGs in Japan. Yes Japan is the land where the RPG started and they love their RPGs but to me the 360 has a whole LOT MORE to offer in terms of gaming and MS needs to push that while selling their RPG titles.
Stuff like Viva Pinata, Gears of war, B&K could sell well if marketed right...
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 21st 2008 10:08PM
They've been buying the same games for over a decade now and no one's been able to really pry them off of their jrpgs with any noticeable or long term success. That was the main reason why xbox has never done well.
Notice how these few weeks where they get a large spike it's always on a week of another JRPG. Last time was that Tales game, and this time it was Infinite Undiscovery. No one's ever going to get them into shooters and wrpgs.
KewlKat @ Sep 21st 2008 10:10PM
That's foolishness Japan people like RPGs and that's about it. I hate to stereotype, but this proves it throw a RPG at the Japanese people ESPECIALLY A SE one and they'll run out and buy it in droves. Maybe a Viva Pinata or a Banjo can do something, but noway Gears can sell there.
TheAzureKnight @ Sep 21st 2008 10:16PM
I hate stereotypes too for the most part but they do have some truth to them.
MS just has to get a big presence there and maybe create a game that isn't specifically an RPG but has elements of an JRPG that will attract Japanese people to the 360.
A shooter focusing on Asian matters? I know it sounds corny but they could create some sorta epic story that is truly authetic to the region that might attract Japanese people to buy it.
Customizations, ete. Side quests. Good online....
Just throwing it out there. Anyways MS never expected to do well in Japan but they're still trying hard which I definitely respect them for.
FSK405K @ Sep 21st 2008 10:59PM
Ya, there would be no RPGs if Japan wasn't around. lol
Titanium_Orchid @ Sep 21st 2008 11:49PM
I'm pretty sure RPGs started in America
Arnon @ Sep 21st 2008 11:50PM
Wasn't D&D the first RPG? :x Think it was made in America.
samfish @ Sep 22nd 2008 12:32AM
The Japanese tend to like games, from what I can tell, that aren't as competitive or have a snappy, pick up and play gameplay element to them.
But western games tend to be competition-based and require twitch reflexes in a lot of cases and constantly having to adapt those reflexes as you progress in the games.
Hence, a game like Street Fighter can be really popular in Japan, but a shooter won't be. So it's bull headed to say that the Japanese only like JRPGs, when the reality is that western game design fundamentals just don't appeal to them, much like how a lot of western gamers find JRPGs (or scenario/dating sims) to be too slow and plodding.
Someone with enough vision could probably easily popularize a genre like third person shooters in Japan, but the end result would be a very different shooter compared to what is considered the norm. Sort of like how Pikmin is an RTS game at it's core.
Platformers to me seem like they would be and are a good hybrid to appeal to the two camps, but platformers are all but dead (except this year, where we have at least 6 good platformers coming out...go figure)
Haggard (Mr.ESC resurrection force) @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:42AM
samfish is right, the cultural values there are simply different, not 'weird'. Just as most people here in the west would find anime silly, they find the steroid abusing gruff men of most shooters and action games here to be weird. I agree with AzureKnight on that, it's not the genre of the game, it's the way it's designed and the features of the story.
..for example, if CoD4 was ridiculous and everyone had giant spiky hair, it'd be a blockbuster
Wiinterfang @ Sep 21st 2008 10:08PM
Holy **** the wii is untouchable.
Gun Barrier (Gamer Tag) @ Sep 21st 2008 10:12PM
wow. Is anybody hoping that the 360 sells more next month?
