Well I don't think Sony knows where the PS3 is heading either, so it's good to have a "plan b".. :)

I'm not sure I'll be a day-one purchaser next time around! It was a long time until there was a decent line up of games available, plus it cost me so much money at launch! I'll be sticking with the PS3 for a long while yet...

Well, look at it this way: You got the original 60-fully backward compatible PS3. Some people would kill to get your model. I'm glad I bought mine early on. I still have roughly 20 PS2 games and I do get in that nostalgic mood from time to time.

I agree...I am so happy to have my launch ps3 just because of the backward compatibility. How else would I be able to play Metal Gear Solid 1? I'm super sad though, because based off the "people don't want backward compatability" I fear that the PS4 won't let me play PS1/PS2 games.

@Wonderflex: I got your point, but you can play MGS1 with _any_ PS3 because it's a PS1 game.

Now, MGS2 and MGS3, you'd need at least an 80GB with software BC or a 60GB with full BC for those.

yea so I'll hang onto my PS3 next time around.......I got rid of my PS2 6 months b4 I got a PS3 and I dont wanna miss out on games like that again in 6-7 years.......lol.......

good thinking on their part tho.......

I take it the PS4 will be more about gaming in the sense that Trenton admitted a while back that the PS3 was made by Hardware buff engineers(which is why the PS2 BC is done in a way that makes it too expensive).....get the gaming folk on the PS4 and it will be GOLD from launch.......

Now I wonder what the Crytech games will be like in 5-7 years..........hell Crysis was damn near ahead of its time last year and STILL is......lol

I find this article pretty pathetic... um... there's no information here... just... someone hyping something that currently yet does not even exist...

So that means that everyone should be hyping THE BEST GAME IN ALL OF HISTORY PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE. This game doesn't exist yet. I have ideas of how the game would work and what it would be, but... I'm not ready to desmonstrate it yet. So please send me all the fanmail and love you know I deserve... otherwise there's no point in gushing over the PS4. We dont' even know if it's going to be disk based yet.

my buddy was reading to me an article that Sony plans on running 4 cell processors parallel to each other with double the sub cpu's I have to find that article he was talking about and post it, it was an insane read!!

I suppose those smaller Cells will really come in handy. Plus Sony still have Blu-Ray, what will Microsoft use?

I'd have thought the common sense approach for the PS4 would be to keep the platform roughly the same, increase the number of SPUs in the cell, increase the RAM onboard to something like 4 or 6GB.

The key area will be the graphics sub system, this has to be capable of rendering everything at 1920x1080 @ 60fps.

Keeping the platform roughly the same would help backwards compatibility no end and the platform does seem to be reasonably open to scaling up quite well.

Crytek is a bunch of idiots, Sony should kick them outta the ps3 community. Why don't they concentrate on the PS3 and show us some amazing things today??? What are they saying? It's not good enough??? And want fantasy specifications for the PS4 from a company that changed the PS3 specs up to the last minute and keeps changing it after going live??? Gimme a break, leave Sony alone, they're confused as it is, and let them concentrate on making the PS3 the best it can be.

2012 might be a bit early, no? Everything from Sony points at the earliest would be 2015.

They said the PS3 would have a ten year life span. I understand that Microsoft's next console is rumored to be around 2012, but I don't believe Sony can afford to release a new console until they get a return back on the PS3.

Also, Intel really wants Larrabee in the new Xbox so, that will change the game way more than the Cell could even dream. That is to say Microsoft goes with Intel, still a bit early to tell.

uhhh....10 year life cycle does not man that Sony will wait 10 years for a new console. It means they will continue to PRODUCE the console for 10 years (ps2 was supposed to have an 8 year cycle...came out in 2000 and is still going strong) and OVERLAP it with another console. PS4 in 2011

This is so irrelevant. When the PS4 is out, this blog should still be focusing on the PS3. If you want to talk about consoles that don't exist yet, make a PS4 blog.

Can't they work on making games that have more than just Graphics? I have a mid-spec PC, so it won't play Crysis to it's full, which highlights the game's weaknesses.

*Blu-Ray included, maybe 8x read capability. Much faster data transfer. Can read 4-8 layers. 100-200 GB storage capacity.
*XXXGB harddrive included on all models.
*SIXAXIS will return, for backwars compatibility and utilize in new games.
*Dual-Cell processor, cost should be down by then. Maybe 4 Ghz. That, or a new model. With more Cells. Will allow backwards compitibility all the way back to PSX.
*More RAM, clocked to the same speed as the processor. At least 1GB.
*A more capable GPU, here I don't dare to speculate. Shared architecture?
*Increased focus on PS4 as a media center. Built-in Playstation-TV.

I agree with your basic concept, but your stats are too conservative (and I think Sony should be more conservative next time). 4 cells, 4 gb ram, 4x/8x blu-ray, DualShock 4 are bare minimum. Sony should definitely stick with the tech that cost them so much in R&D this time.

So soon? My wallet is still recovering from buying my PS3! Sadly, unless they include backwards compatibility, I'll be hanging up the ole DualShock. Hear that SONY? no backwards compatibility = no more of my money!

Seems a bit premature to base it on the specs of the PS4. Cause though I am sure Sony is entertaining some ideas the PS4 its still just on the drawing table and even ideas they have made now are very likely to change. Sony definatly likes to try new things so it possible the PS4 will also be a power house.

But with recent trends and profits being so painful with high end systems whose not to say the next step for PS4 and even xbox720 is not as great a step in an effort to cut losses. Cause the amount of losses has been too drasitic of an increment if you compare the losses on the PS2 to the losses on the PS3 imagine if this continues(scary). But if they keep the 10 year life thing I have no doubt the PS4 will be vastly superior to the PS3 even if they choose a path of less loss.

Sony is long term player, unlike M$ or ND.
It next Playstation I would expect :-
4x (USB 3.0) at the front
6x (USB 3.0) at the back
2x gigbite network connections
WiFi to be able to do 802.11a/b/n
2x HDMI Outputs
1x HDMI Inputs

Programers would love it if had an MMU and was also able to do double float numbers.

Lot more SPU's with more memory bandwidth.
Lot more RAM there never to much it not possiable.

GPU which was using it own SPU's.

Harddrives which uses 3.5"

Able to process DVB-T2.
