Man, the day I turned down Gears 2 is the day hell would frezee. Of course, the day they offered Gears 2 to me would be a the same as the launch of Duke Nukem Forever (please don't say it's close, I don't believe it anymore).

But I congratulate her. You need to be very confident as a professional to know not only the money involved, but the work you can do with it (and anybody involved in Bioshock must be glowing with sheer confidence right now).

"I'm actually going to put an ad in Craigslist, because I live near campus, like "Wanted, Dude or Dudette who blazes through games. I will provide console and titles. Come over." And pot. [laughs] Just come over."

I like her.

Just out of curiosity, who's the girl in the pic? That's not Susan O'Connor...

Yeah it's her. Or if it's not her, it's close enough.

Well, here she is in 2007. So either it's not her or she's improved a lot.

But does this even matter? I'd be willing to bet 80% of the commentors on Joystiq aren't so hot.

Yes, only Journalists and high school pot heads finish games.... real good interview up till that moment. If you think your audiences is a bunch of drooling losers why not get into sitcoms or something you respect.

Silly comment, especially after all the comments on the industry being taken more seriously and developers trying to get better stories. Why are they bothering when they are just selling to a bunch of high school pot heads?

i can kind of feel what she is saying though. i haven't completed new a game in a long while. i play just for fun or the heck of it mostly then i sometimes just get into a groove with a game and take it to the end. i might finish a bunch of games in a couple days that i previously just stopped playing for any number of reasons. i get less gaming done now than when my time was more limited because i just dic around instead of completing goals

Just because you smoke pot doesn't make you a drooling loser.

I don't believe she was implying that only potheads finish games, just that she'd throw in some herb to sweeten the deal.

Of course if you don't smoke or have never tried any such substances I can see how you would hate cool people.

Yeah, Susan O'Connor has a big gobbler turkey neck and is pudgy and looks like a chain smoker. If that pic is really her, kudos to the dude with the photoshop skillz for making her look semi-attractive.

Uh, I just interviewed her in person and she definitely doesn't look like what you described. Let me guess, you have bad acne, weight about 300, and have a huge patch of back hair. Classy.

Great interview. I am actually very interested in game writing so I'll be sure to re-read this like 20 times.

Grow up. If you're old enough to type, you're old enough to treat others with respect. Stop making gamers look like "drooling losers" by posting rude comments here. You could try thinking about the interview and responding to something in it intelligently, but otherwise just wait until you mature to open your mouth.

You know who I'm talking to.

"...the way the games are written have become more cinematic..."

Have nothing against that, except most game devels slack on implementing "Skip" button.

To have a story in game is good. To have a story game forces on you - sucks.

"[...] Wanted, Dude or Dudette who blazes through games. I will provide console and titles. Come over. [...]"

That kind of lame because in the end you would see a game from POV of fulltime/hardcore gamer.

And list of games spoiled by hardcore beta testers is much much longer than list of games screwed up by bad devels or stupid management.

Thanks for very insightful interview! ;)

I found this interview to be particularly illuminating. I now understand why some RPGs, for instance, can have fairly good stories but fairly obvious plot-holes (and a plot-hole is just that--a contradiction or omission that cannot be explained or analysed logically). I'm thinking right now of FE: RADIANT DAWN but this can apply to many RPGs, such as FFXII. In the case of XII it's obvious that "the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing"--it's a great game but each specialised dev team clearly worked separately and had no contact with each other as the story doesn't really sync in with the play. I can go on and on about this but in the end we can't really complain; storytelling in games have come a long way.

I'm shocked that she referenced drugs in a pro manner several times in this interview, and that she would actually place that stereotype on us.
