Lego Batman PS2 bundle available now for $150

Next bundle we'd like to see from Sony: PS3 bundled with PS2. Or the return of backwards compatibility ... just sayin'.

For the record, various reports online indicate that this is the first release of the SCPH-90000 in the US.
Can someone here confirm this?
Jonny @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:40PM
The PS2 90001 Series has came out in the US last week for 129.99.
ChronoZaga @ Sep 24th 2008 1:50AM
Yeah, this is the "new" (new to the US, has been out in Japan for a while) slim PS2. It's a tiny bit thicker, but it has no power "brick" adapter, the power converter is completely integrated.
I'm picking one up and trading back the Lego Batman. I just want it for the eventual day when my 60GB PS3 dies and I have to downgrade to one without backwards compatibility.
Josh @ Sep 24th 2008 2:22AM
What does the 1 indicate?
Josh @ Sep 24th 2008 2:25AM
By the way, ChronoZaga, why buy the PS2 now? I'm in the same boat as you. I use a 60 GB PS3 now for everything, but when it eventually kicks the bucket, I want to have a healthy supply of PS2s to keep playing PS1 and PS2 games.
But I'm not going to start buying the PS2s until the system finally ceases to be manufactured. When Sony says, "Alright, this is it," then I'll buy. And by that time, they'll be cheaper, cooler, smaller, etc. (most likely), anyway. So why buy now?
Night Elve @ Sep 24th 2008 8:05AM
Man I'm in the same boat I want a healthy supply of PS2 just in case.
This bundle sounds tempting, but there is too many games to buy these months that I've to administrate my money.
=/
Haggard (Mr.ESC resurrection force) @ Sep 24th 2008 11:32AM
When they cease manufacture the price is likely to skyrocket.
I was considering buying a few PS1 games recently, and couldn't find them cheaper than £60 used..
ChronoZaga @ Sep 24th 2008 5:39PM
I was incorrect when I said that it was thicker. At first glance it appeared so, but when I compared the two "slims" side-by-side, they have the same width .
FSK405K @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:09PM
Wow! I guess they really want to clear out their stocks of PS2s. Soon they'll be on display at the front of every toy and retail store with $99 stickers.
Kspraydad @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:20PM
And at 99 I'll pick up an extra.
zlickrick @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:12PM
"So you said you wanted Playstion for Christmas, right Jimmy?"
philmcphail (Free Mr.ESC!) @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:25PM
hahahahhahahaahahhahahahahah!!!!!!!!! Its so funny but just as sad at the same time!
FSK405K @ Sep 24th 2008 12:38AM
great appreciation on your "The Big Screen" skill
jimmygotsmack @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:12PM

Batam?!
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:20PM
Good value for the budget gamer or for a first console.
Vokhens @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:24PM
I thought its retailing for 139.99
Bumcats @ Sep 24th 2008 10:30AM
I think it may be 139.99? I work at Hollywood Video and I got this in yesterday and our system shows it coming up as 139.99 (10 more bucks more than regular slim). So now I'm not sure about the pricing of this thing.
DangerMouse @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:30PM
The 360 arcade is only 50 more dollars, unless they're planning on dropping the price on the PS2 soon, but still, the consumer can get so much more with a 360 since the retail shelf space will only going to get bigger rather than smaller. Someone at Sony must be under a shitload of pressure to show some sort of profit. I don't think they're going about it the right way, tbh.
Markez (A tribute to those who fought and failed during the Epic Flamewar of L.A. Noir) @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:07PM
As I said below, I agree for the most part. That being said, the PS2 catalog is huge, and there's a yit-load of cheap used games. Hell, even new ones at this point...
Going forward though, not a great console to have if its your only one. Depending on if you're a serious gamer or not, I suppose.
Kspraydad @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:22PM
Pssstt...some people really don't want a 360 no matter the price.
aj @ Sep 24th 2008 7:08AM
I have a PS2, a DS, and a PSP.
Why? Because "next gen" games cost 80$. And I haven't even played 1/10th of the games that I am interested in playing on the PS2, and most of those games are available for 10$ to 20$ used at this point.
I'll buy an Xbox when it's not 200$ and the games are not 80$. Thanks.
Psycho300x @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:44PM
why isnt this like $100 yet? you can buy a 360 for $50 more
Markez (A tribute to those who fought and failed during the Epic Flamewar of L.A. Noir) @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:06PM
My guess is just a massive overstock of PS2s to clear out of inventory. Have a family friend who drives a garbage truck, and got his PS2 at the distribution center because there was a huge amount of them being thrown away by distributor/mfg/retailer. Gotta get the $s off the books some way or another.
I don't know, I don't think it's a terrible idea or a bad deal... I have a slim PS2, which is great, but it rarely is ever touched. Moreso a spare DVD player at this point, although I do plan to hack through the $5 copy of the 2nd R&C I grabbed up. Well, at some point anyway. Those games rule.
Invisible Robot Meat @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:08PM
yeah but compared to PS2, the 360 has hardly any games!
Blue_Falcon @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:18PM
I'm glad they're including New Frontier (as it's a good movie, even though they cut a lot out from the GN).
But I feel like it would've been more appropriate to include one of the Batman: TAS movies. Recently they released a disc including both Mask of the Phantasm and Sub-Zero, which probably would've gone with the Batman theme a little better.
brian @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:25PM
GHEE WHIZZICKER BATMAN!!! A LAST BID ATTEMPT TO MAKE MONEY FROM A DEAD CONSOLE
Negativecool @ Sep 24th 2008 12:00AM
Dead? Who's selling a dead console?
Did Microsoft start selling the xbox again, or did Nintendo put more Gamecubes on the shelf?
Kspraydad @ Sep 24th 2008 12:17AM
What, EXACTLY, is wrong with SONY selling the PS2?
There are plenty of great games still coming out for this platform.
brian @ Sep 24th 2008 2:30AM
yes, it's obviously a great idea to put support into a console that will die soon instead of putting the most efforts into your main product.
aj @ Sep 24th 2008 7:10AM
"Persona 4". That's all I'm saying.
Negativecool @ Sep 24th 2008 11:03AM
Their 'main' product? Short sighted people like you would believe that the PS3 should be Sony's only focus, when in reality, their focus is on whatever makes them money, which is the PSP, PS2, and PS3. The PS2 is still very much alive and economically viable.
DangerMouse @ Sep 24th 2008 12:28AM
"That being said, the PS2 catalog is huge, and there's a yit-load of cheap used games."
Good point. I think it's good for the younger children who aren't fully aware of hardware and software and all the complicated stuff. But even from that point of view, the Wii still has them beat, with the way it's been marketed to the parents and such.
bettieblue @ Sep 24th 2008 12:38AM
The PS2 is like a money making machine for Sony. The PS2 sold 144,100 units in August. That is real money.
http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2008/09/12/system-and-game-sales-for-august-2008-in-the-usa.htm
Microsh!t wishes they had the combined sales of PSP/PS3/PS2. You can get boatloads of PS2 games all over the place, Walmart, Target, Bestbuy, plus the game stores.
PS2 will sell over 100K for another 6 months easy.
DangerMouse @ Sep 24th 2008 12:47AM
Okay, but those PS2 games at those retailers are mostly Greatest hits that sell for only 20 dollars, or 3 packs of repackaged games for 30. Compare that to the 360 or Wii titles that are selling at 50-60 dollars. While you can call the PS2 a money making machine, it's not enough to make up for the money-pit that the PS3 has become.
TzakShrike @ Sep 25th 2008 5:14PM
Can I just remind you that Microsoft's Games Division, which is responsible for the XBox and the 360 and pretty much NOTHING ELSE has NEVER turned a profit? (Well, except for maybe one month when Halo 2 or 3 was released, can't remember which one).
By comparison, me throwing my money down the toilet $5 at a time would be considered a money making machine.
Geist @ Sep 24th 2008 2:31AM
Your argument had merit until you said "Microshit". Then everyone stopped listening.
Ayrkain @ Sep 24th 2008 2:43AM
The PS3 was a moneypit, true. But they've made the 3 billion they sunk into it back, just in this year's software revenues. 3.7 billion this year so far and they haven't even hit the holidays yet.
ejamer @ Sep 24th 2008 7:47AM
@Ayrkain
Do you have a source for that? I have a very hard time believing that Sony made that much from PS3 software sales... Actually, I have a hard time believing they made that much back in total software sales over this year.
If it is true, and if you can provide a source for that claim, then it's very impressive!
bettieblue @ Sep 24th 2008 8:06AM
New games still coming out for it. Rockband 2, force unleashed, sports games. Sure its not next gen, but its a very affordable for people that cant afford even the gimped 360.
Games are everywhere, they are cheap, and not just greatest hits. My town probably has 20 gamestops? Each of the filled with many PS2 used games.
Even if Sony only makes $50 off of each PS2 sold that would have been over 7 million in August. If they sell on average 150,000 k units per month in 2008 that is 50 million in profit just in PS2 sales. Now add up the software.
As for me using a name with MS, I have the right. I own a 360 and a PS3, they sit right beside each other. The 360 has taken no less than 3 vacations to Texas while the PS3 keeps on ticking. The PS3 use to be used way less, now its the 360 that sits idle not even plugged into my network right now.
Ayrkain @ Sep 24th 2008 12:51PM
Sorry, lost the sauce in the morass that is Google Reader.
Ayrkain @ Sep 24th 2008 12:55PM
"Year-to-date (Jan-Aug), the PlayStation brand has generated almost $3.7 billion in revenue, representing an increase of 21% year-over-year."
Sorry, I remembered it a little different, but here you go.

ejamer @ Sep 24th 2008 4:39PM
Wow... that is *very* impressive, even though 3.7 billion represents the total revenue across all PlayStation brands and products - not just software sales, and not just PS3 sales.
It doesn't mean that PS3 has been able to recoup its losses yet (because most of the actual profit being earned is still coming from other products), but that's a LOT of money rolling in!
Ringo @ Sep 24th 2008 7:13AM
"Next bundle we'd like to see from Sony: PS3 bundled with PS2" - lold and 2nded.
j.howlett @ Sep 24th 2008 8:16AM
i like that i got my 60gig but i hardly play older ps2 titles on it because i didn't transfer my saves yet. i play bushido blade often though (ps1). i use to read alot about how some people didn't want a ps3 at all no matter what the price. i see people now who say they never had a sony system say they will only get a ps3 when they put back in BC but won't get a ps2 for the games they heard were great. sony got the price down if you want to play ps3 and ps1 games. if you just want to be in the know to have some type of gamer cred and you have a 360, get the ps2
Squirrel3D @ Sep 24th 2008 1:24PM
To Negativecool:
It's also short sighted when you contuine to focus on a last gen console, when your current console is in dire need of the games that PS2 is still getting. You mean Lego Batman can't be a PS3 game too? Give me a break. This is why I don't have PS3 on my soon to be christmas list, and why I'm not in a hurry to get one ether.
DiRT @ Sep 24th 2008 2:47PM
Are you trying to say that LEGO Batman isn't on the PS3? Or are you saying that the PS2 version is going to keep people from buying a PS3 because people would've bought a PS3 to play LEGO Batman? Either way... WTF?
Honch @ Sep 24th 2008 8:46PM
It would've been cheaper to stop producing the PS2, add backwards compatibility, and offer justice league thru the PSN video store, and possibly offer Lego Batman for the PS2 price on the PSN....just a thought Sony
