Burnout Paradise PS3 Trophies patch released, not retroactive
Folks, we've got good news and bad news. Okay, the good news first: Criterion Games has released a patch for Burnout Paradise that adds Trophies. The bad news is those Trophies are not going to be awarded retroactively. Despite having previously stating they were "thinking ahead" with Trophy support, the developers said today, "We had hoped to use this to retroactively award trophies, but we discovered during testing that this is not possible." A new game save will be required.
Criterion notes this is the same as with all other PS3 games that patched in Trophies. Though that's true, we're admittedly a bit bummed since we had been replaying the game under the promise that we'd retroactively get some (online) street cred for our PSN ID.

What a colossal fuckup, they must have only actually tested this yesterday.
Look back at previous posts and podcasts and they GUARANTEE a trophy pay-day for all.
Now its the newbies that will have trophies, and the people who've spent all year on the thing looking like fools.
They may as well not bothered with the patch, and just worked it into the PSN download version of Burnout.
Sk8monroe81 @ Oct 14th 2008 4:12PM
trophies = epic fail
lol....
its not even a fair system, or even a system at that.
just something that was added to 3 psn arcade games and a handful of old titles.
i got in a fight with somebody on joystiq because they guaranteed that ALL PS3 games will have trophies after Jan 1, 2009... yeah right.
i stand behind my opinion that it will take sony up to 2-3 years to really have the trophy system working for all games, however a lot of old games never will get trophies. and if we have already played the games, most of us don't want to replay a game only for trophies or achievements. that's not the reason to play the game.
Replica23 @ Sep 25th 2008 8:46AM
Epic fail. Period.
rogXue @ Sep 25th 2008 8:50AM
Yeah screw that. I have an A license... I am not going all the way back to the start. Thanks for the dedication to the game criterion but I'll pass. It goes along with my creed of fuck trophies/achievements anyways...
Agathos @ Sep 25th 2008 9:04AM
Great stuff, not an epic fail. A studio releases an outstanding well
reviewed multi-console game and then continues to support it months
after release with loads of free content = Awesome.
Intenet nobodies with sad real lives with nothing better to do than
hop on anonymous forums and bash everything including blockbuster
movies, games, and any lick of good news even if it doesn have a few
details they could nitpick at = FAIL.
Yeah its not the greatest that its not retroactive, but did you have fun with the hours you spent playing it? I like trophies and achievements too but they're not everything...
dark_inchworm @ Sep 25th 2008 9:12AM
This man is the man.
JoeTheBlow @ Sep 25th 2008 9:13AM
They could have told us last week when they released the bike pack.
Some of us spent a lot of time on the thing to get 101%, and would now have to start over again to get a single trophy.
Bear in mind, this isn't a "redo the challenges" complaint, its that you have to trash your save file completely. Hundreds of thousands of us have put a TON of time into them, takes forever getting all the cars and challenges.
Replaying Uncharted, not so bad.
This=months of work out the window
Ignatius @ Sep 25th 2008 9:17AM
Kind of stupid that now you have to play through the whole game AGAIN to get them though, right?
Cheap way of getting some replay value if you really do want those trophies.
Eh, I didn't like Burnout Paradise, I'll wait til they bring back the Crash Mode and instant restarts. (I _hate_ driving back and forth for hours.)
Vidikron @ Sep 25th 2008 10:20AM
Could you transfer saves from one console to another? If yes, then it should have been obvious this was going to happen. The only game I know of to receive retroactive trophies is Warhawk, but its saves are tied to your online account. For any other game it would open the door to rampant cheating. We saw this exact same thing in the early days of the 360. People would load completed saves and being awared 1000 points without ever having played the game beyond booting it up.
TVGenius @ Sep 25th 2008 10:33AM
Look, I love the game as much as anyone, but you have to admit they screwed the pooch on this one. To promise something like this, when they've delivered on so many amazing promises already, and then wait until the release to admit they can't do what they've been pumping all along, reeks of what usually happens with video games, not what we've come to expect from Burnout and Criterion thus far.
Nathan @ Sep 25th 2008 9:06AM
Yes it's a pain and they should have known earlier, or at least not said anything until the knew for sure.
But at least we get a trophy patch & free updates which is far more than most games out there. So I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. And I for one have had a hell of a lot of fun with Burnout before the trophies so I don't mind restarting. Of course I was only on 70% - might feel different if I was at 101%
glitched @ Sep 25th 2008 9:25AM
Criterion is wrong when they note that it's the same with all other PS3 games that had trophies patched in.
KarlW @ Sep 25th 2008 9:26AM
"Criterion notes this is the same as with all other PS3 games that patched in Trophies"
Heard of WarHawk?
Kevin @ Sep 25th 2008 9:59AM
It depends on what is saved in the game. If Warhawk has a robust stats system, many of the trophies can be awarded based on the saved stats.
While if Burnout only keeps track of best lap and best time for every race, you're not going to be able to track every possible trophy (like flying through the air for some distance).
PS- I haven't played either yet, just giving examples...
Josh @ Sep 25th 2008 5:14PM
Another thing to keep in mind is Warhawk achievements are tied to your PSN ID, NOT a saved game on your HD.
Remember, the reason most trophies are not retroactive is so I can't go to www.getallthetrophies.com (not a real site) and download someone else's perfect save game.
Vidikron @ Sep 25th 2008 10:23AM
He's right about Warhawk. The difference though isn't just the fact that it keeps detailed stats. The main difference that allowed retroactive trophies is that all your stats are keep online. Since the stats are kept on the Warhawk servers there's no way to cheat and transfer a game save to your PS3 that already has all the trophies.
Swamp Donkey @ Sep 25th 2008 9:39AM
I just blogged about how releasing non-retroactive trophy patches is a good business decision for publishers. Check it out..

Well that sucks.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 25th 2008 10:13AM
Whatever. If it angers you that Burnout has trophies and they aren't retroactive, just pretend it never got trophies at all.
Oddly, I still enjoy Rock Band despite a lack of trophies. I supposed I can manage with Burnout too.
west43rd @ Sep 25th 2008 10:41AM
I lost my game save in the trophy patch from Sony. And at that time Criterion said that trophies would be retroactive. So I've worked my tail off only to find that I'm back at the beginning again!!!!
I agree that I love what they are doing in this game and certainly I understand if it doesn't work. But they REALLY should have said something sooner. There's simply no way they just discovered this yesterday. They must have known it wouldn't be possible for weeks.
This is especially disenheartening, considering how much effort I just put into my 40x stunt run and 20x burnout awards.
j.howlett @ Sep 25th 2008 10:49AM
someone posted a link to a possible work around on ps3fanboy. i've yet to pick up this game, wasn't waiting for trophies just broke.
ROYALWCHZ @ Sep 25th 2008 11:44AM
I am having troubles downloading the update, it is not even prompting me to do so... Any Suggestions???
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 25th 2008 12:59PM
Just miffed that they obviously knew this for a while and didn't say a word until the day its released.
HartKnight @ Sep 25th 2008 1:17PM
I'm not one to care about points, trophies, or whatever they're called today, but even I was ready for the retroactive ones for Burnout Paradise. Of course I'm not happy about this either. As much as I really like Burnout, I'm not playing it again just for trophies.
D_Average @ Sep 25th 2008 1:19PM
Anyone actually GET the patch yet? I started a new game save while connected to the Network but still no trophies....
Unholy @ Aug 11th 2009 10:43PM
I am not getting the patch yet either. I think it is only released in the UK currently because I have a friend on my friendslist that has trophies now.
Unholy @ Sep 25th 2008 2:41PM

someone on my list has been playing off and on since morning and at last check had 40% of the trophies.
umm....hello??? @ Sep 25th 2008 3:02PM
anyone having problems synching their Uncharted trophies? in the game files it lists all the trophies that I've retroactively earned, but in my Trophy file on the PS3 it says synchronizing and then it doesn't say anything other than Uncharted trophies are at 0%.
Zampano @ Sep 25th 2008 4:23PM
Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but I know on your profile (for some odd reason) your trophies don't show until you go to a friend's profile and 'compare trophies'. Weird, I know, but true.
Hope that helps.
NIF3 @ Sep 25th 2008 3:45PM
i also didn't get the patch. it'll probably come after ps store update later.
Shron @ Sep 25th 2008 4:26PM
I find it amusing that people piss and moan about things that are FREE.
burnt-out @ Sep 25th 2008 5:23PM
It's now 6:20AM on Friday - PS store updated, but still no update... Criterion FAILS.
Gabe @ Sep 27th 2008 2:21AM
So trophies do what for you, exactly? Can you trade them in for cash? When you get enough do you get a free toaster? Or is it just a way to show your friends that you spent assloads of time playing the game? I just got my 101% after a whopping 91 hours of gameplay, and I really couldn't give a shit about not having any trophies to show for it. If I need recognition I can always take a picture of the fancy platinum car I get to drive around.
Sure, it's annoying that they couldn't have figured out how to dole them out retroactively, but in the big scope of things, is it really that important?
Admit it... Those of you that are really worked up about this have printed out your Burnout driver's license and carry it around in your wallet to try and pick up chicks.
wallRiDeR @ Sep 29th 2008 7:43PM
wow i cant believe all this moaning and groaning about a simple game that continues to bring out free updates i have spent 270 hrs on burnout paradise and i was at 101% and i play daily and i restarted to get the trophies and it took me a day to get them all so stop ur wineing and suck it up buttercup there's nothing u can do or say that will change anything so enjoy something FREE
