This GameTap thing sounds interesting. Do they REALLY mean free? Are there ads and other annoyances?

You download the client. Sign in (or log in as guest, but then you can't access M rated games)

When you download games it shows you some video ads (but you can minimize them).
Each time you start a game it shows you a 30sec ish video ad.

It doesn't bother me at all. Others might be more sensitive. I wish they'd vary the ads a bit more though.

(NB: If you are outside the US then you might find you can't log in - which means M games aren't available).

I suggest that if you want to play any of the Fallout games, track down an old copy or sign up for the early access at gog.com (both 1 and 2 are available, I think for 5.99 each).

The problem with Fallout on Gametap is that they release the unpatched versions (for sure with Fallout 1, I assume it will be the same for 2). Both games had some pretty serious glitches and bugs on release. If you buy it somewhere, you get the official patches plus there are several fan made patches that fix even more bugs.

It continues to mystify me why Gametap releases retail versions of some games instead of releasing them with the official patches installed.

I concur. I distinctly remember having to start Fallout 1 over again back in the day due to a bug.

Also, GOG.com is great, I downloaded a couple games and love what they are doing there. If you can get it there, do it.

When does this go live? I just checked then because I've heard so much about Fallout but never played it, but it isn't in the free games list yet.

Gah! I just (like 1 hour ago) bought this on GOG.COM.

Still, if you're right about the patching then i guess i'm still happy.. and i got another game free into the bargain.

But still.... :-(

You can access M games as long as you register for a Green (free) account. You can't register for a Gold account because you're outside US\Canada, but anyone can get a Green account.

i used to be able to access all the free games, and I had a green account.

But about 6 months ago they changed the client, and when i tried to log in it told me "gametap isn't available in your country". I can still get in with the guest account.

Annoying, as i was 50% of the way through Hitman at the time...

It's not supposed to work like that. As their support guys, I bet they can get you fixed up. As long as you haven't wiped out the install your save should still be there.

Or, you can buy it from GOG.com and burn it to a disc and have it forever and it's DRM-Free. Why waste the money on Gametap?

Original ISO's of the 2 games should be free.

Don't pirate great games. Give them the money they deserve. :)

FO1 and 2 are NOT free "abandon-ware" titles. They can actually still be purchased retail. Don't cheap up, they're only 10 bucks for both of them.

to the guy who said something about the "real" patches... they're not going to provide a product with "community patches"... don't be dumb.

I already know about the patches. The community patch CAN'T be sold by anyone. That was part of the point. The two games should be released for free as a marketing gimmick to promote the 3rd. Free, in their original form, so that the community patches can be used.
