Max Payne noir-ly gets an 'R,' MPAA settles on 'PG-13'

Director John Moore has confirmed that the film adaptation of Max Payne will receive a PG-13 rating when it releases Oct. 17. Earlier this month, the director admitted he was in a fight with the Motion Picture Association of America after being told his movie "feels R."

In an interview with GameDaily, Moore states that they merely "trimmed some frames," but didn't make any major changes. It's certainly amusing that a kid will be able to purchase a ticket to the movie adaptation of an M-rated game s/he shouldn't be able to purchase in a store.

The Dark Knight felt like an R movie, but I was surprised after walking out of the theater saying, "That was a PG-13 movie!?"

Not that I'm comparing The Dark Knight to Max Payne, but PG-13 movies can be pretty violent sometimes.

It depends how much money the producers have.

Best part about seeing The Dark Knight? Two times during the movie, parents took their terrified kids out of the theater! :D

Dark Knight didn't have any on screen blood, sex, or even much more than a couple punches.

The Joker said some mean things and a gun pointed towards a kid's head isn't pretty but Indian Jones is more violent.

Did NvM miss the pencil trick and the man Joker lit on fire atop a mountain of money? That's some pretty grim stuff.

And don't you EVER compare that crap Indiana Jones to The Dark Knight. Lucas messes everything up.

I thought The Dark Knight wasn't gritty enough, and should have gone for the R. Make it truly twisted, make the audience uncomfortable.

The bit where he had 'try-outs' involving a pool cue made me cringe the most.

I must go and see this "Indian Jones" you speak of...

kids movie, not max payne

Ratings on content in games and movies never matched up anyway...

MPAA: "Hey guys remember Saw and Hostel? Yeah that totally deserved an R-rating"

ESRB: "Hey guys remember Manhunt 2? ....We really dropped the ball on that one, right?"

The Braid movie would have a seen saying "fuck you" for using a strategy guide

So I guess we have to wait for the Unrated DVD Release. That shouldn't take more than two months. :/

Well if the PG-13 version is good than I wouldn't mind watching it in theaters.

I can't believe that they're actually calling it "Max Payne." That name is so ridiculous, it seems like a parody. I mean, it'd still be possible to have it based off of the game with a different name - or at least call it something different and have the subtitle of the movie be "a Max Payne adventure."

doesn't the game have drugs to heal you and i remember being thoroughly annoyed by the part where you have to walk along the lines of blood and the screams of your child in the background

I would imagine its Max Payne, but a new story.

That being said, I do think I heard something about the dream sequences being really crazy to shoot...I dunno, its too early for me.

They should rename this Minimum Payne.

It's 20th Century Fox, what did anyone expect? They recut both Hitman and Live Free or Die Hard solely for the purpose of attaining a PG-13 rating for movies that should have been R. PG-13 opens to a wider audience meaning more money. In their minds, screw accuracy. Look at the first AvP.

This reminds me of the documentary "This Film is not Yet Rated"

Well, I feel this is okay. I think it is more of a "mind fuck" to watch people dieing as opposed to pushing a button (pulling a trigger) and killing them yourself.

R rated games and PG-13 movies makes perfect sense to me.

The trailers are weird, I didn't knew max payne face some angels but still cool.

WTF?! I'd rather the story be fully developed and grimy with an R rating. If they are just trying to pull more people in with a PG 13 movie and it sux, they'll have an even bigger problem.
