Xbox Live: Halo 3 expansion coming, possibly on Jan 6, 2009
Xbox Live is reporting, "High action and deep mystery await players in this new Halo 3 campaign experience. Prepare to drop!" -- looks like that mystery is solved. Additionally, Joystiq tipster Kyle C has found a date hidden in the teaser for Tuesday January 6, 2009 – see the photographic evidence after the break.

You might even call it frabjous!
ExMcloud @ Sep 25th 2008 10:59AM
Next year? WTF Bungie me want it now!
Kyle C @ Sep 25th 2008 11:06AM
Yay thanks for posting my image :)
Lone Starr @ Sep 25th 2008 11:44AM
How in the hell did you find that? You've got eagle eyes.
Playace @ Sep 25th 2008 11:54AM
Can't believe you picked that up, nice work.
It's odd, the trailer reminds me of Halo 2, as they make the jump from the city. That last pod is totally the Chief though, no questions. Maybe. I don't know what to think, either way I'm sure it'll be amazing. Can't wait.
Jakka(A tribute to whose who fought and failed during the Epic Flamewar of L.A. Noir) @ Sep 25th 2008 11:01AM
That's too obvious...
I was halfway through adding all these numbers together to make it into a MD5 hash!
Mellow @ Sep 25th 2008 11:06AM
I guess it's a prequel? City of New Mombassa was the first attack from the Covenant.
And, will we be doing a squad type thing or MC?
GalileoAce @ Sep 25th 2008 11:17AM
Yeah..And the space elevator is clearly still standing which means it has to be before MC gets back to earth, or just afterward.
RolexDPracer @ Sep 25th 2008 11:03AM
Oh hell yeah!!! Thank you Bungie!!!
IanC @ Sep 25th 2008 11:04AM
Poor Bungie.... will they ever get a chance to do anything that isnt Halo?
elpmis @ Sep 25th 2008 11:08AM
I'd feel bad for them if Halo wasn't so awesome.
arrrgh @ Sep 25th 2008 11:19AM
pit is awesome
Jakka(A tribute to whose who fought and failed during the Epic Flamewar of L.A. Noir) @ Sep 25th 2008 11:20AM
Starting a new franchise is something that takes a lot of effort(Story,Characters,World).Something that I don't think Bungie would now be able to do.
Thanks to additional lore such as books, Halo has grown so big that anything else Bungie would make would suck in comparison and everybody would hold a grudge against them.Plus,Halo is good so what's the problem? Do we blame IW or Rockstar for only making CoD and GTA? What about Nintendo who is pretty much living off the same four franchises(Pokemon,Mario,Zelda,Metroid) for the last twenty-years? We don't get all pissed off about them, we just jump around screaming from excitement!
Anthony @ Sep 25th 2008 12:06PM
Sure we would blame those two companies if they only stuck to on franchise... Except they don't...
smurfy @ Sep 25th 2008 12:09PM
Hmm maybe because Rockstar doesn't just make GTA?
Jakka(A tribute to whose who fought and failed during the Epic Flamewar of L.A. Noir) @ Sep 25th 2008 12:16PM
@ Anthony
Actually IW only did three CoD4 games while Bungie has Marathon,Myth and Halo trilogies as well as a lot of small unnamed games that didn't quite get a mention in the History of Popular Video Games.
As I said, the reason why they don't do it is because they wouldn't be able to take the community-pressure, not because they're desperately sticking to the franchise.
BryanH @ Sep 25th 2008 1:25PM
I doubt this is the only thing they're working on. For one, its only DLC. Its not a full game or anything. More involved then a map pack, sure, but they probably don't have or need everyone working on it. Like someone else mentioned, it takes a lot to develop a whole new world for a game (you know, unless its sports or media-base game, and a few other genres). It wouldn't be surprising for Bungie to be plotting and developing the settings and story for an original IP while others play a bit more in the Halo universe. Either way, they've yet to make an outirght horrible game, especially from the Halo series, so I hope they keep it up with this.
Fenix @ Sep 25th 2008 11:05AM
But I wanted the squad based tactical game :(
Joel @ Sep 25th 2008 11:19AM
Same here....I am really bummed now...
Dirty @ Sep 25th 2008 11:56AM
I just dont find squad based games all the fun. More often than not they are more frustrating than fun. Im more of guns-a-blazing type.
Fenix @ Sep 25th 2008 12:10PM
But they said it was rumored to be a darker grittier Halo with a gameplay mix of GRAW and Gears.
Now that had me excited.
Dirty @ Sep 25th 2008 12:48PM
They said that it probably might be rumored that someone thinks that its about Wall-E.
Fenix @ Sep 25th 2008 1:18PM
Oh that rumor, yeah I was talking about a different one that sounds more plausible.
BTW, I feel you on the gunz-z-blazing.
ifalldownstairs @ Sep 28th 2008 12:36AM
how do you know it isn't? The drop pods and final "prepare to drop" message make me think its pretty likely that this is the tactical expansion focusing on the helljumpers.
Dirty @ Sep 25th 2008 11:06AM
Wonder if it follows the chief... guess we didn't finish the fight.
Steven M @ Sep 25th 2008 11:07AM
yes!!! and good find kyle c
Kizzle @ Sep 25th 2008 11:08AM
Uh, so they pulled the E3 announcemnt so they could put it up today? Fucking stupid. Should have been shown at E3.
dark_inchworm @ Sep 25th 2008 11:13AM
Not like we'd have it any sooner...
John Z @ Sep 25th 2008 11:17AM
They didn't want to overshadow the New Xbox Experience, I imagine. Good call, really: given how deplorably E3 was received, BY EVERYONE, announcing "Halo 3.1" would have dominated the press coverage to the exclusion of all else. Which would have been bad from MS's standpoint since NXE is their "next big thing".
Also, they probably had to delay the expansion itself. Imagine the bitchstorm that would ensue if it was announced two months ago for January '09.
Vcize @ Sep 25th 2008 2:49PM
John Z, if those were the reasons they pulled it they would have just never planned it in the first place, not pulled it at the last second.
They pulled it because Sony and (especially) Nintendo had virtually no big announcements that could contend with the things MS had already announced.
In short, they didn't need it then so they figured they'd save it for some extra momentum going into the holliday season. Sort of the same way a football coach isn't going to pull out one of his best trick plays in a game that they're already up 34-0, but rather save it for next week when things are closer.

A 2nd reference to January 6th 2009.
HighFiveJesus @ Sep 25th 2008 11:16AM
the superintendant is a new ai?
Xoonaka @ Sep 25th 2008 11:18AM
Hasn't all this been talked about before? Why are people acting like this expansion is new news?
...I mean, excuse me for not knowing, but this is the same thing as Mythic, right?
rTwelve [xbl:chilblane] @ Sep 25th 2008 11:24AM
Mythic at least refers to the supposed six upcoming maps, the Mythic map pack, which are referenced in the new achievements.
t00l @ Sep 25th 2008 11:20AM
I'd assume thats the 1st of June, not 6th of January, at that date you'd think they'd push it a little harder to make Christmas. :/
dark_inchworm @ Sep 25th 2008 11:25AM
No American types dates like that!
PATRIOTISM EVOLVED
AwesomeTown @ Sep 25th 2008 11:44AM
Well these should be what those skull achievements would probably be for, right?
DEEZNUTZ @ Sep 25th 2008 12:34PM
It's their cushion. If they're on target for Jan, then it's Jan. IF they are not, then they say "sorry for the confusion. We meant it as June 1".
MrKniceGuy @ Sep 25th 2008 3:20PM
That's what I was wondering. If Bungie were not in the US I would say it is a June release. But they are, so Jan. is the best guess.
Einhanderkiller @ Sep 25th 2008 11:23AM
So is this a Halo 3 Tetris game?
paralipsis @ Sep 25th 2008 11:24AM
Unless that's the European release date. Then it's something like eight months away rather than three.
anonim1979 @ Sep 25th 2008 4:36PM

Fixed for you
Arturo @ Sep 25th 2008 11:32AM
Two days before my 22nd birthday XD
angryemu @ Sep 25th 2008 11:35AM
Does that say "ESRB M Racing/Driving?" Halo 3 was rated T. There seem to be a lot of comments on driving in the video. Maybe this is a vehicle-only expansion?
Dirty @ Sep 25th 2008 11:54AM
Master Banjo Kachief? That could have been mashed together better but Im tired.
Strike Man @ Sep 25th 2008 12:06PM
Halo 3, like the previous two titles in the series, was rated M for Mature in North America.
John Z @ Sep 25th 2008 12:07PM
It says "Rating Pending".
angryemu @ Sep 25th 2008 12:14PM
Whoops... I'm incorrect, it seems.
GoonieGooGoo @ Sep 25th 2008 11:50AM
From that trailer and the hints so far.....methinks this is expansion will definitely have some kind of Multiplayer Co-op.
Given that its an attack on new Mombasa....the question is...will you be the alien attackers or be the defenders human defenders.
It's not RAINBOW 6 : HALO some of us wanted....but ya never know.
I'm excited. Maybe more achievements.....Where's the MYTHIC Pack???
Either which way.....Microsoft will sell alot of consoles this CHRISTMAS.
