No time to read all the post.
STOP selling games at all, just put it up for rent for 1.99 per month so people can return them whenever they finish the game. Isn't that what MMORPG doing now? Anyone ever see War Of Warcraft used copy?

after a google search as to any difference in buying used vs. downloading, a link to this blog appeared.
As i'm reading thru all the posts, i can't believe how much this original topic has gotten out of control. People should go back to the first post to see the point to author was making.

But my 2 cents on the matter, i both buy used and download, have for years. If i like a particular game, i'll test it out by d/l'ing it, and if i like it enough, i'll buy it, albeit, form the mighty eBay, not new. Games cost too much. And for the past few years, I, like many gamers, truly feel the end product does not justify the hefty price tag. And forget about purchasing a copy off eBay of anything "vintage" or "rare". I've seen games from 8-bit NES on up to PSX going for four digit figures. Why empty my bank account when i can d/l it for free????
I'm an honest pirate if there is such a thing. I do not do it for profit. Never have and never will. I do support game devs wehn i can by buying a new copy of a game I feel is worth the asking price.
case in point, every year Madden is released and the only difference from the last years game? Player rosters. Why shell out $50-$60 for the same game as last year? Just make roster updates we can grab online for a small fee.
I'm not saying I'm right or wrong, it's just my point of view. Oh, and to show how much i do support the industry, I have 12 video game consoles from 8 bit to current gen and my pwned game count stands at 214 as of today. Nuff said.

I couldn't stand to read all the comments, and maybe this point has already been made, my apologies if that is the case.

Second hand game sales DO boost original game sales in the following ways - and thus, in some small way, do support the orginal Devs.

1) The ability to resell encourages original purchases. Example? Last year I bought a VW Golf. Part of my purchasing decision was based on the fact that I could sell it, and put the funds towards a new car in several years time. Equally, I risked the purchase of Eternal Sonata (at £20) new (actually the same price as a second hand copy), knowing that if it failed to interest me (which it did), I could sell it on.

2) Shops like Gamestation, and Game, (in the UK) make very VERY little profit from selling new games. If second hand games did not bolster their profits they would be unable to proliferate in the way that they do. Thus, advertising, and a degree of high street presence would be lost. This would affect original revenue.

Anyway, if Bungie is so worried, they should lower prices on vintage titles, and apply the "vintage" brand sooner. (See above Eternal Sonata example)

why don't we just make buying houses illegal too, I mean after a family bought it from the developer of the area, and I buy it from the family, the developer makes no money from the sale either.

pfffftttt.

Hi. I liked this discussion a lot. I do not know much about the economics behind the gaming industry and if anyone could enlighten me, it would be appreciated. I'm also concerned about the ethics involved with both used games and downloading ROMS. Here are my main points and please tell me what you think:
1) If the console and its intended gaming line is still being produced and sold (PS3,PS2,Xbox 360, DS, etc.) I only buy new games or rent the game and then if I decide it is worth keeping, I buy it.
2) If the game has been remade (such as Chrono Trigger for DS or those virtual console games), I don't download the game/buy it used.
3) If the console is no longer in production or the game has not been remade yet (NES, SNES, N64, Dreamcast,GBA, etc.) I see no problems with downloading the games and I sometimes buy the cartridges/CDs used just for the sake of having something tangible.

Again, I don't know much about the economics and how money is distributed and to whom, but ethically, this seems to be as fair as I can make it out to be in my own head. Legally, I have no clue and don't really care.
