I would go out on a limb and say it's because sony is now putting full retail games online for download, there by cutting out a potential sale of gamestops's used game market.

I was going to buy one at Blockbuster here in Santa Monica, CA and they charged tax on it. Are they allowed to do that, isn't it essentially a gift card, which are not taxable? I just did not want to use my credit card, I am trying to do everything with cash now.

Miggy don't buy it if they charge tax cause the PSN will charge you tax too when you purchase something, based on where the user account is located ( if the user account is in a state that doesn't charge sales tax, it won't be charged )
The main reason Sony is FINALLY bringing these PSN cards is for people whose don't have credit cards/can't get them to work.
If you didn't know the PSN uses Address Verification System (AVS) which is VERY strict on how credit/debit cards are entered. Not only that, not all banks and credit card companies support AVS, and if it doesn't you automatically can't use that card on PSN. This is why a lot of people get Invalid Credit Card errors when they try entering information from their local bank debit card or small bank credit card, even though they enter it exactly as on their statement.

wth, if they charge tax theres no way im buying one. it adds up. Paying an extra $5 for a card could have been a "Beats" or another game download.

I have not been back to the store but I will mention it to the manager. You are right plus the tax after a while adds up, that in the end could have been a game or a Rock Band song. It not that I don't have credit cards is just that I don't want to use them and add debt, if I buy the card it's paid for already I don't have to worry about a bill later and interest rate on the credit card.

They aren't at Gamestop because the cards use a different type of activation system that Gamestop computers don't use.
Sort of like how you can buy gift cards for other stores/restaurants/etc. at Wal*Mart - the PSN cards use that technology, and Gamestop computers don't support it.

I was kind of wondering what the issue was, I mean, we had them at our store for a little while now. Then I saw the shelftags in the picture... and further looking confirmed it is a picture from a Meijer store.
We usually don't get new games right away so I'm surprised we were one of the first retailers to carry the PSN cards.
Kind of surprising Gamestop doesn't have them. And I thought they were more like Wii Point cards where they just have a code on them, not like normal scan-&-recharge gift cards?

I was charged tax for a $20 card at Blockbuster in Texas. I was also charged for tax on the PSN Store.
I took the receipt back to Blockbuster with a screenshot of Sony double charging me on tax, and they were good sports enough to refund the tax money.
I pretty sure the tax isn't supposed to be charged at the store for the card. Actually, Microsoft Point cards (Xbox 360/Zune) and Wii Points cards are taxed, but they:
A) Aren't taxed on their respective marketplaces.
B) Aren't techically "gift cards" because you're buying points, not transferring money.
Either FastCard (the card makers) or Sony royally screwed up. Since the currency on the PSN Store is literally USD, it's definitely a gift card.
Beware! Unless you're living in a tax-free state, make sure you aren't being charged tax at the store! Make sure to explain the situation to the employee or to a manager.

You dont need the PSN card, you can go to HEB plus and buy one visa or master card gift card (20,50 or 100USD) and you can use those insted of PSN, I use it and it works
