What's surprising, though, is that it appears to lose a bit in the fun department during translation. Of course, maybe this is more about the actual achievement. We should really stop looking a gift Sackboy in the mouth.

You had to know this sort of thing was coming: As you can see right after the break, Super Mario Bros.' World 1-1 has been replicated in the make-your-own-fun platformer, LittleBigPlanet. It's not exact (in fact, we wouldn't be surprised to see players trying to immediately trump it) but it's still adorable.
What's surprising, though, is that it appears to lose a bit in the fun department during translation. Of course, maybe this is more about the actual achievement. We should really stop looking a gift Sackboy in the mouth.

Love the turtles! And yes, a bit long, but really pretty. It does show the power of LBP though. Remove the ? and it could be a decent game by itself. Very cool demo for sure.

The differences in jump mechanics completely kills it. Mario has a fast, vertical jump, whereas sackboy is floaty, slow, horizontal, and "grabby", in that he's supposed to scamper up edges and such.
I understand the flexibility of the level editors. I get it, I really do! But its demos like this that convince me that the scope of this game is not anywhere near what some people make it out to be. The LittleBigColossus, for instance wasn't a creature so big that it acted like a level (what SotC accomplished), it was a big level that represented a creature. In other words, very conventional platforming.
I believe that LBP will bring a platform editor, the likes of which the gaming world has never seen. However, I don't believe that it will rival Super Mario Galaxy in terms of innovative platforming elements and gameplay. SMG is just a platforming Opus that will take generations of games to eclipse.

Mario Galaxies was amazing. I've been wanting to play it recently. But soon I'll have an over abundance of new games... There will be no need to jump back to old great games for some time

The slowness and floatyness of this game is exactly the reason I think it looks boring as sin. Remaking World 1-1 amplifies my issues with the game tenfold. The actual gameplay simply looks boring boring boring.
That said, this is just the beta, so I have no doubt that eventually a more accurate LOOKING 1-1 will eventually emerge.

i'm in the beta, and i have to say the floatiness really fits some levels. the ones that mediamolecule provided fit the characters/controls perfectly, as do a large portion of the user-created ones.
i do agree that this looks bad though. i knew it was a matter of time before people started redoing mario levels, but they will probably universally be boring in lbp. the way the characters move do not fit the layout of mario games at all.

go ahead and down vote me if you want, but this is an honest opinion: Mario 64 trumps Galaxy. It was so innovative for the time, and still holds true and is fun to this day. Galaxy bored me and my brother to death.
I can, however, see it as the Mario 64 of the current generation; people who grew up playing this before/at the same time asMario 64 would like it more because they didn't experience the joy of the jump to 3D, an the gameplay formula is new to them.
To me, though, LBP is going to be good because of the sheer possibilities for puzzles, and for insanely difficult platforming levels. The normal game will probably be good, but it's the best of the user content that might make it great.

Samfish, take it easy. This video highlights the issues with recreating Mario levels in the game, but not with the game itself. LBP obviously shoots for a very different style of platforming than Mario, one that focuses heavily on, for instance, grabbing and manipulating objects in mid-air. A Mario-style jump mechanic wouldn't work well for that.
This is obviously a rushed creation, and I expect that later ones will be greatly improved in both gameplay and appearance -- even so, I agree it'll probably never recreate Mario very well. But that's not the point of the game.

Yeah, I was going to point out ejamer's posts over here:

But you all pretty much covered everything he said already.
So yeah, recreating Mario levels in LBP is useless. Come up with your own ideas, people.

I'm also in the beta, and I can honestly say that the floatiness (which isn't a word, but whatever) doesn't really take anything away from the gameplay. LBP was definitely not meant to be the second coming of the platformer; It's innovation is in how players can completely customize levels, their characters, the music, and everything else about the game. So, is it like Spore, with very little gameplay to compliment the creation system? Personally I'd say that LBP trumps spore in every single way imaginable.
This level is a TERRIBLE representation of what a LBP level can be. It's not even a good remake of world 1-1. You can absolutely make a high difficulty map, with lots of enemies and hard to hit jumps, just like in Mario Bro's. That's not really what this game is about though, but the option is absolutely there if you want to take it.
Also, if you can't get in, try the european beta's. I got in through the Aussie beta on day one, as did a friend of mine (And I'm no aussie. I'd feel bad, but every european and his mother is going to get in through the US/Canada's Beta come monday).
If Gamespot comes through and gets me another code, I'll be posting it here on Joystiq as a first come, first serve type of thing. Don't hold your breath though, because as we all know, Gamespot fails hard.

Thanks for the comments, good and bad. This was my first attempt at the level so I admit I still had a lot to learn after creating this.
I'm surprised that it's been so well received though, it's posted all over the place! Thanks to whoever the guy was that captured this video, although he didn't play the level all that well hehe.

I'm actually somewhat disappointed in the blocks. I thought that the question mark indicated that the contents were a surprise. The only variation on the blue things was the one that had NOTHING in it.
That's kinda like getting all socks for Christmas, except for the one person who got you can empty box for kicks. Not cool.

I think what SuperGay means is levels made for a fireball shooting plumber who can jump 5 million miles straight up and run faster than Usain Bolt wont work for a little sack who cant jump as high, or move as fast.

there is a Sonic stage made by someone at NeoGAF, he made a Sonic car, but it still on the works and needs a lot of tweaking, since it is almost impossible to pass the level (one person was about to finish it and died randomly)

Super Mario, Shadow of The Colossus... How amazing is it that we live in a day and age where we have all-new hardware to make things we've all seen before?
Seriously, what is up with peoples' lack of imagination with this title? You can make your own levels to your own specification! Why not try to make something that hasn't been done before?

It looks boring because it's based on a relic, go and load up SMB and tell me how much fun you have, having played it to death years ago.
An exact replica, movement and sound, would be just as dull as the one above.
This game is GOTY without a shadow of a doubt, the beta is a joy beyond compare.

Speak for yourselves. Those who understand that levels and player controls and abilities need to be finely tuned to work together are not the least bit surprised by this.
Some are also questioning whether cute + level-building will be enough to carry the game. You can build all the levels you want, but if the character controls are not interesting and responsive, the game will fall short. For me, this Super-Mario level as well as the colossus level shown previously are starting to bring that into focus.

I apreciate the customization and spirit of the game, but in everything I have seen, it seems the platforming controls of the game is really awful.
At 0:46 he needed a couple of tries to just clear that small obstacle. I think the developers of the game focused so much of the creative aspects of the game, they put the gameplay mechanics in as an afterthought.

Case in point: GTA4 compare with the other ones.

So if you can't accomplish something on a first try then the controls automatically suck? I don't know about you, but I know I've screwed up jumps plenty of times in platformers. In this case, the guy went under the overhang and hit his head attempting to jump over. I fail to see how that is a failing in the controls in any way.
Honestly, I'm surprised how some people continue to harp on the way the characters controls. Yeah, they're floaty... so what? Is there some unwritten rule that all platformers have to control exactly the same way?
