Rumor: WipEout HD crashing for popular players
Though critical reaction to WipEout HD has been extremely positive so far, reports are beginning to crop up of two major qualms players have with the hyperactive racer. The first of which is, of course, the game's arbitrarily intErcappEd titlE -- the second is a bug that causes the game to freeze or crash for some players. These crashes may not pick their victims at random, however, as members of the European PlayStation forums have deduced that they only strike down PSN users with over 50 e-quaintences on their friends lists.
It's not clear whether or not this is actually the case, though certain sociable so-and-sos on our Blu-ray-enabled sister site, PS3 Fanboy, have experienced the freezes (which can apparently be remedied by signing out of PSN while playing). Sony has yet to comment on the veracity of this claim, though they are currently looking into the issue. Until then, we'll be thanking our lucky stars for our lifelong, soul-crushing unpopularity.

I've only got about 5 friends and have had no problems :) (I'm in IL btw)
Superstar90 @ Sep 27th 2008 1:08PM
Being a loner pays off!
Tiptup300 @ Sep 27th 2008 4:16PM
See, this could never been done on the 360. Way too many people have friends on xbox live.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Sep 27th 2008 8:22PM
So THAT'S why the average Live user has 23 contacts according to Microsoft, because they have so many gosh durn friends.
Tiptup300 @ Sep 28th 2008 1:10AM
I meant that in a joking way, but seriously, I only know so many people who own ps3s, but even if you have a big friends list you get no informatoin back from it.
You get two bits of info
1) Are they offline?
2) If online what game?
This is not enough information for a true online experience!
You don't get to see what all games they have and when they play them, so I have no idea when most of my friends play online or what they play.
Averna @ Sep 28th 2008 8:09PM
Yeah thats the one thing that bugs me about my black box. It is really barebones on the friendlist. As much as I hate my 360, the friend list on that thing is near perfect. I just hope Sony switch some resources to fleshing out some of these features after Home is released
SoulBlade @ Sep 27th 2008 1:18PM
This isn't the first time a game crashed because of the PSN. I wonder what the deal is.
Dave @ Sep 27th 2008 1:29PM
ZOMG GET OVER THE EFFING TITLE! It's honestly not funny any more.
Haggard (Mr.ESC resurrection force) @ Sep 27th 2008 2:06PM
Maybe they're hoping that if they complain enough, the folks in 1995 will hear and change it..
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 27th 2008 3:14PM
It was never funny. Not once.
gombard @ Sep 27th 2008 1:38PM
That's like the 2nd or 3rd game that freezes or locks up during a game that the current remedy is to log yourself out of PSN.. Doesn't anyone else think that's a little strange?
jinn35 @ Sep 27th 2008 1:39PM
http://insidethedigitalfoundry.blogspot.com/2008/09/wipeout-hds-1080p-sleight-of-hand.html
this game has been working fine for me, but this link looked interesting.
paralipsis @ Sep 27th 2008 3:12PM
That's a very impressive workaround to effectively get 1080p running smoothly
jinn35 @ Sep 27th 2008 7:53PM
yeah, i wonder if other companies will start to do this with their games so they no longer have framerate issues.
Si @ Sep 28th 2008 5:55AM
So in short, it's ALWAYS in 1080p, as it's always got more than 1080 lines of vertical resolution, and at times the resolution is greater than 1080p.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p
Whats crap, is so few 360 games can manage native 1080p (the list is about 3 I seem to recall).
Einhanderkiller @ Sep 27th 2008 1:41PM
Wipey-out!
Ted @ Sep 27th 2008 1:51PM
I only have a few friends on PSN (add me: MassterTed)
The only problems I had with wipeout so far was when I was downloading the game I would get an error and signed out of PSN
Have not got it since, I think it was just because the servers were hammered
Ranus Studios @ Sep 27th 2008 1:52PM
Whew! Good thing I don't have any friends!
jaferris @ Sep 27th 2008 1:56PM
yer i having problems loads up press campaing or any option it freezes have too turn console off
i have 78 friends in list
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Sep 27th 2008 8:25PM
I take it most of those friends on your list comes from the various mispellings of the 12 people you REALLY wanted to add?
jaferris @ Sep 27th 2008 8:34PM
thats funny :)
but guess what it dosnt fix the wipout problem does it mate
JoeTheBlow @ Sep 27th 2008 2:24PM
The problem seems to have eased off a bit, maybe the servers were getting hammered on the first day or two.
Brilliant game, photo mode is like sex for the eyes!

I keep having a problem with the music skipping during races, its extremely annoying. Hsve any of you guys had a problem with that? Like it happens constantly just skipping bad bad bad, i even redownloaded the game and reinstalled it and the problem was still here :( what do i do!
Eggy @ Sep 27th 2008 3:58PM
No problems but you know that loss of hearing could be a sign of an upcoming partial seizure? :P
Vidikron @ Sep 27th 2008 4:39PM
Nope... not a single skip. I've used both the built in soundtrack and my own music and it works perfectly either way.
Lord Taku @ Sep 29th 2008 6:50AM
Audio skips for me too. Very annoying. Otherwise the game runs great.
The Aggie CEO @ Sep 27th 2008 2:28PM
I've got like 58 friends......no freezing**knocks on wood**
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 27th 2008 3:03PM
It's probably not the PSN's fault, just the way the developers interfaced the game with the network.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 27th 2008 3:15PM
This was supposed to be a reply to SoulBlade! Joystiq is at it again...to me at least :P
Slayer @ Sep 27th 2008 3:05PM
I wish I had so many friends that PSN would crash on me. :( That being said, please add me as a friend. My psn is Slayer_Zero_. :)
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Sep 27th 2008 3:33PM
Too bad, I heard that it was a really awesome game.
Warlock @ Sep 27th 2008 3:44PM
Haven't had any crashes in Wipeout HD--but then again I have no friends.
Love the game, love photo mode!

mezzanine @ Sep 27th 2008 3:59PM
Well, thank god I don't have any friends...I guess...
*sigh*
Whoppy @ Sep 27th 2008 4:10PM
Not had any problems but then I only have 4 friends listed :D Loving the game though, played it a lot since it came out, and I can see myself continuing to do so for a long, long, long time.
I would've happily paid twice the amount charged, and would still consider it a good deal.
z @ Sep 28th 2008 5:57AM
For the love... Could you guys get over the capital "E"? Have you not been paying attention to any WipEout games until now? Have you ever seen the older logos? Do you know anything about style? Just leave it alone already.
Logan @ Sep 27th 2008 5:46PM
I haven't taken this online yet but I have noticed that it sometimes takes the countdown that appears before the races to start counting down consistently. Sometimes it starts counting down right off the bat, sometimes it takes 5-7 seconds to start counting down. It's very strange and I'm not sure if this a glitch or if anyone else is experiencing this or not. Otherwise great game, I haven't had any freeze ups or lag(other than the countdown timer).
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Sep 27th 2008 8:29PM
No crashes here, part of me also desperately wants map packs or a texture editor. Allowing us to create our own skins.
DrunkRaba @ Sep 27th 2008 10:34PM
Been an awesome game so far as I have also not had any issues. The online runs at a beautifully perfect 60 fps constantly. This game is butter!
J @ Sep 27th 2008 11:08PM
anyone actually good at this game WITHOUT pilot assist turned on. It's so freaking difficult! I just use it as a tech demo. I suck. I probably played for 4 hours straight last night, and just when i thought i was getting better, i forgot that i left "pilot assist" on. If only I were a hacker.
It did crash on me once online, but i only have like 2 friends. I think it's just a lil glitch they'll eventually patch. Don't really care that much cause I SUCK! Amazing graphics, though.
Dan CiTi @ Sep 28th 2008 12:55AM
I've had no problems with this game. The online for this game has an amazing feature set. Heck, it's better than anything on 360. The way the server list and lobby system works is a dream.
GoonieGooGoo @ Sep 28th 2008 1:45AM
WEll....it's definitely crashed on me 2X in ONLINE Games only when connecting to a game.
Still a great game....
By the way...I'm getting really sick of this PUSH TO TALK on PSN....just let people talk while they play for goddsakes and offer them a mute button.
deafwing @ Sep 28th 2008 9:50AM
hmm must be user specific, I have over 50 friends, and I'm always on, online, standalone, in 1080i/p/inbetween no problems ... must be all that sweat permiating in the air while playing clogging the cell processor (^ _ ^ )
Inect @ Sep 28th 2008 12:54PM
This or burnout which should i choose.
Whoppy @ Sep 28th 2008 1:21PM
Both :D
But get Burnout in store second hand if money is an issue. They are both excellent games, so you won't go wrong with either if you decide to only get one.
JoeTheBlow @ Sep 29th 2008 3:48AM
Noooo, don't give Gamestop more money, give it to the developers who deserve it for giving us a year of free content.
Burnout is right there on the PSN now, just as cheap as 2nd would be.
Always handy to have on the drive too for quick bootups now.
Deaf-Sword @ Sep 28th 2008 8:41PM
Test phase2
retro @ Sep 29th 2008 7:24AM
98 friends, crashes a treat for me :(
Same happened when TF2 ( orange box ) was released earlier in the year, that was patched.
Cracking game, smooth and graphically stunning game. No LBP beater though which is just incredible. I suspect this could be a good xmas for PS3 this year.
aphrael @ Sep 30th 2008 8:51AM
So far so good for me *cross fingers*
