In their most recent weekly news update, Valve announced that starting next week, Steam will begin hosting certain user-created mods of Source engine titles such as Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2. Owners of any Source title will be able to download these mods for free -- what's more, Valve has promised automatic updates and stat tracking for the mods they add to the download service.
The first five mods to be highlighted by Steam are Age of Chivalry, a medieval HL2 mod (pictured above); Synergy, another mod for HL2 which adds a co-op mode to the campaign; D.I.P.R.I.P., a multiplayer vehicular combat game; Zombie Panic, a spiritual precursor to Left 4 Dead; and Insurgency, a "total conversion" mod that takes players out of City 17, and places them on a modern battlefield. Sadly, our Source-based Burgertime mod didn't make the cut. Hopefully Valve will get wise and pick it up with the next batch.

Steam is a way better distribution system than iTunes in so many ways; you shouldn't even mention both of them in the same sentence.

Been waiting for the Orange Box update to Synergy for a long time.

This is great news. Really looking forward to this. I wonder if zombie panic is going to take any sales away from the new Left 4 Dead game...

They're all fun, tis why they're being hosted.
Synergy is a fully functional co-op mode for the entire Half-Life 2 series so if that's your thing, go for it.
Zombie Panic! is one of the most atmospheric mods out there.
I prefer Vikings, Pirates and Knights 2 to Age of Chivalry, although that might have been because there used to be no good servers for it.

All of them are great.
Synergy is a fantastic co-op mod, though I think Sven Co-op is more fun (Half-Life 1-only, though).
Age of Chivalry is good. When compared to Pirates, Knights, and Vikings 2, another medieval mod, it leans more towards the "realistic" side; PVK2 is more arcade-ish.
DIPRIP is like Twisted Metal online.
Insurgency is awesome. It's fairly realistic, and is a lot fun if you play with people who know what they're doing.
And Zombie Panic: Source is a lot of fun. I prefer Zombie Master to it, but that mod is making progress very slowly. Version 1.2.0 is coming out soon, though.

Yes, Portal comes with Source SDK Base - Orange Box so you'll be able to download and install Synergy.

Actually, I just realised you said the same thing that I did, as long as you weren't actually meaning that you could "play" the mod.

I think you guys made a mistake. Seeing as Valve was created for making money, as other game companies have lead us to believe, they must be sending cease and desist orders to these mod teams... not actually supporting and celebrating these shameless, shameless rip-offs of Valve's precious IPs.

I don't know whether you're being sarcastic or not..
If not, then Valve makes money by having a very loyal customer base, who are kept happy by free content in between major game releases. Valve fully supports mods because it gives you more incentive to buy their games.

AT LAST Insurgency gets some love. That mod is better than pretty much every commercial modern-warfare FPS I've played in the last two years, and yet no one plays it.

ZaxCG2, Valve's entire delivery system for Steam is internet based. How can you complain about it when you don't have internet? That'd be like me complaining I can't watch cable because Comcast requires me to have a cable run to my tv.

Yay, I do love me some Insurgency. Only problem is that noobs coming in means its less likely I'll be playing with experienced players (who don't spawn camp or team kill). Ah well, every team needs some cannon fodder, I guess...
Zombie Panic is fun, too; I liked Zombie Master better, but nobody plays it anymore and I think the devs stopped working on it :( .
