PC gaming is dead. Hmm. I wonder how pc game sales went up almost 50% in 2007. I sure can't understand how pc games could make up 15% of games sales totals at retailers either. That doesn't include digital distribution, like Steam, btw. The best selling game in the world is a pc game as well...how confusing.

Well, R.I.P PC gaming.

15%? That's it?? So handhelds and consoles make up the other 85% then.

We've all seen PC sales week by week, and just about every week it's casual games like the sims or WoW, again not something to brag about.

Sales are so weak on PC, that you guys brag when games like Sins of a solar empire sell 500,000. Just about every decent console game nowadays gets that and more and there's way more pc's out there than consoles.

Meanwhile, more and more former PC only devs like Bethesda, Bioware, Epic, and very soon Crytek, have not only gone console...but made it their main focus. Most PC games are ports, and it's not a surprise when it's a rushed buggy port. I don't see any console only developers jumping ship to PC.

Keep in mind that most don't have a gaming PC just to play games on, it can serve many many other purposes as well to give it more value for your money.

I'm not paying $1000 just to play Crysis, I can also use it as a great media center, for some productivity applications, etc.

PC gaming is a niche, and it has its fans and it has its advantages over consoles, as do consoles over PCs. I like PCs for all the modding you can do, I like consoles for split-screen multiplayer with friends. All are good. : )

Stop making up figures to support opinions.
Its not big and its not clever.

Additionally, if have some problem with PC gamers I suggest you take a personal stand right now by throwing the machine you're sitting at out of a window.

As as a side effect you may experience loss of internet connectivity. Dont worry, its a good thing.

A lot of people are pointing out that not selling a product to prevent theft is no solution at all. What they're missing is that only selling it on (comparatively) secure consoles *is* a solution. No need to lose sleep over significant piracy, no need to pay a sales team to track it, no need to pay the Russian mafia to install DRM, no need to pay a PR team to deal with the fallout from said DRM.

I've been a PC-exclusive gamer since 2000 until this year, but I think most of the rationalizations I read are just that. You know at least half the people who write the long, articulate denials of the effects of piracy have a stack of Sharpied DVDs in their desk drawer.

I have to assume that CliffyB was being sarcastic, because otherwise what he said wasn't just stupid, but it doesn't even make sense. Why would anyone need to upgrade their PC to play GoW2? The 360's hardware is three years old and a low-end 9800 goes for about $150, half the price of a 360, and you'd still be guaranteed an experience at least as good.

What CliffyB's comment amounts to is that anyone with a video card that is less than three years old must be a pirate.

Of course, Epic made their fortune from PC titles like the original Unreal and UT/2k3/2k4, all for which Epic willingly patched out the copy protection. And for all the success that the PC gave them, what did they do with the capital? They created Xbox-exclusives. But hey, it's one thing to be a business and go after the money, it's another thing to go out of your way to insult the people who fed you back when you had nothing. Or I suppose all those Unreal players with their Voodoo cards were all pirates too? CliffyB, tell us the secret to how you printed your own money since you made nothing during all those years.

Or, he was just joking. Let's hope.

The intended frame of reference was not "everybody in the world" but "everybody who played GoW1". I did not mean to say that everyone owns a newer video card, but if you played GoW1 with your PC you can play GoW2 with the same hardware and do not need to upgrade.

that's an epic fail. it's not piracy that made the game fail, it's epic. can you pirate unreal tournament 3 to play online? no! do people want to play it? neither. proof enough to me that epic just can't deliver good games, the gears of war thing is just a cheap excuse for them, i. e. blaming something that doesn't defend itself.

You know... Epic has really lost their way. First Mark Rein "Stresses" on how PC manufacturers need to include better video cards, and now his "homefry" Cliffy "Head Up his Own A**" B says that people with video cards are all pirates?

Am I missing something here?

Look almost every savvy PC gamer downloads of off the Torrent sites but not all of them are "pirates"

75% of the torrents ive downloaded were because the games had NO DEMO'S and the worry was the games performance on my machine.

Epic didn't even release a demo for Gears of War, yet they of all people should know the importance of being able to test the game on your hardware before making that 50$ purchase.

Crytek complained nonstop about piracy... yet atleast they offered a chance to see how their game would play on your PC....

Well don't worry Cliffy B... Your on Microsoft's payroll now... and they're a wholly different kind of pirate.

They said GOW PC was never going to happen yet ti came out as MS
likes money even if they are inept at making it properly....

I'll say this much if they make unreal 3 (based off unreal 1 with the whole adventure theme in large well made maps) and amke ti a 360 exclusive...I'll buy 2 360s and the Gdamn game as it would be the best FPS on PC and the 360.

2. Really didnt understand that last part, but just so you know, Unreal tourny 3 IS out for the Xbox 360...with split screen co-op.

@R

He said "Unreal 3", as in the sequel to Unreal and Unreal 2, which were single-player FPS games along the lines of Doom, Half-Life, and funnily enough, Gears of War.

Not "Unreal Tournament 3", the sequel to the Unreal Tournament series.

It's ok if you don't know anything about PC gaming, just be more careful about the way you reply to people who actually understand the subject.

Here is the problem with a lot of PC gamers and you can see it here in the comments. How many times do you read, if a game was cheaper. If it was better than this or that. I wanted to preview the game first (Yeah right). I did not like this or that about the game so I downloaded it instead. There are thousands of excuses that PC gamers use for pirating a game.

The reason people pirate games on the PC is because they can. The numbers for pirating does not decrease but instead increase every year. Someone mentioned Sins of a Solar Empire as a example but if you go and torrent the game you see that it gets download just a s good as a game that doesn't have DRM. The only difference is that the developers did not spend a lot of money creating the game so any decent sales seem like a big win.

Anyway, pirating is a big deal and no matter how much a gamer says that this does not affect a game because they "Wouldn't have bought it in the first place" is stupid. The only way a developer will know if their game is not good is if no one pirated the game and it doesn't sell. A game getting pirated by millions of people but doesn't sell well at retail sure isn't a good way to show a developer their game is garbage.

Point number 2?!?!?! Us smart gamers that build our own PCs are too dumb to purchase games but we're smart to torrent them.......huh?

Wow, talk about assumptions there Cliffy B. I build all my own rigs, quad-core, dual GPU, and gobs of RAM; an I purchase all my games. I bought Gears of War, Crysis and Warhead, and Mass Effect. I bought, not torrented, bought; as in purchased at the store (or Direct2Drive) and received a receipt for my purchases.

Good point. You are 1 person who built a nice gaming rig, and only surveying yourself. That's 1 out of 1 (100%) people named Mack Swift on Joystiq that built a nice gaming rig and doesn't pirate games. So, if we extrapolate that out we can conclude that every single person in the world builds high end gaming rigs and doesn't pirate games.

The pirating problem issue is over!

Yay for useless anecdotal evidence.

As i notice some of your reactions, i guess we are not seeing Cliff's statement as being generalized. (For those who state: "Hi End PCs owners are PIRatez!?!??")

1. I didnt know so many "know" the man personally & had such disdain for him.

2. I take it if your *are a PC gamer, the post is clearly tagged under Xbox 360.

3. For the 5 of you upset with him and his anti-PC (not well thought, due to being a casual interview) statement. Calm down a bit. Not the first time PC misses out on a game. And vica versa (sp?) for consoles...

Ill admit Im not super up to date on PC sales, but when the top selling game every single month for the past 5 years is The Sims, then I think thats a good sign that the home of hardcore gamers isnt on the PC anymore.

Bottom line is that more and more PC gamers ARE pirating, and its much harder to pirate games on consoles. Esp. the 360, where when it red rings, and you ship it to MS, they refuse to fix it if they find signs of modding.

I noticed how on this thread, everyone is posting about how they are good and pure and dont pirate. Go to the last Spore thread, and check out the pages of people saying "screw you EA, I pirated this game."

Its really not that big of a wonder for devs to not want to release big budget games on PC anymore, or to at least be wary of it.

I've been reading these posts and I find it necessary to share a few things. Gotta warn you, though, its gunna be kinda long.

For those of you saying PC gaming is dead, or that it will die, let’s remember an important rule: Software is what sells Hardware. Consider some of the affects if PC gaming was to vanish.

1. If PC gaming dies, there goes the PC market all together. NOTHING, sells PC hardware more than games. There is not a single application an average PC user works with that requires anything more than a single core processor, Windows XP, and maybe a gig of ram. Unless you're CG designer, or work with rendering.

2. True, ATI and Nvidia make a lot of money selling their graphics cards, but don't forget about Intel, and AMD. Without the gaming community, quad core processors, PCI-e, DDR2 and DDR3 memory would never have become mainstream. In fact, most of the PC advancements made in the past 5 years were made with the specific task of better PC performance.

3. So if PC gaming dies, so does ATI, Nvidia, Intel, and AMD...but wait, let’s not forget about all the other hardware manufactures like Corsairs, OCZ, PNY, EVEGA, and a whole slew of other companies who make their living from improving PC performance.

4. No more PC gaming? Well I guess I won't be needing a 22" monitor to read my emails or listen to music, so I guess ACER, Dell, HP, Samsung, and a list of other PC monitor manufactures will take a hit as well.

Now I'm not saying this to bash console gaming. Or to ignore the fact that piracy is a huge issue when it comes to the PC. Console gaming is fun as hell. The X360 and PS3 are great pieces of hardware, but they only make up a very small percentage in terms of hardware "sales". So in that respect, I don’t think PC gaming will ever go away. Pirating on the PC is a huge issue and I really do hope that the PC community comes up with a solution that puts a huge dent in the activity without causing a huge headache. Personally I think an online activation is a great idea for a game. Let's be real, who DOESN'T have an internet connection? And if you don't, you REALLY aren't a serious gamer anyways. If you really like gaming, you'll have an internet connection, and if not, well...go fuck yourself.
I also think developers should make it a habit of releasing a demo for the PC before the game comes out. People want to know how the game is going to run on their system before they dish out 40-60 dollars for a game. And...guess what, some gamers will say "hmm...I really like this game but it doesn’t run as smoothly as I'd like...let me look into BUYING a new piece of hardware"...and look at that, the great big circle keeps on spinning! So if you really think that PC gaming is a bane and should be eradicated, don't forget that your X360 and PS3 are a DIRECT, and absolutely mean... A DIRECT consequence of the successes from the PC gaming world.

Thank you and good night.
