For those of you who didn't read about it over the weekend (why didn't you visit us? We were so cold, so ... lonely), Japanese business journal Nihon Keizai Shimbun – a.k.a. Nikkei – reported that Nintendo is poised to launch a new-model DS this year featuring a built-in camera and "music player." Nintendo of America told told MTV Multiplayer that the article was "solely based upon [Nikkei's] own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo."
NOA also said it "cannot comment on the Nikkei story," despite, well, having commented on it. "While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a [new] DS," it added.
As Multiplayer points out, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is set to deliver his annual update on the company's business Wednesday. Last year's update included the revelation that Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 would appear on Wii and not PS3 as originally planned. NOA, as it turns out, is holding its annual Media Summit on Thursday and Friday of this week. Stars: aligning?

Nintendo Co Limited said the same thing, that the Nikkei article was speculation
We will see. Just a few more days. Hopefully the Japanese side of the media summit (which you guys are just reporting on now?) will have more to say about the delicious looking Monster Hunter 3. Someone around here who claimed that Capcom was dropping major title support for Wii will have some crow to eat.

I just want the confirmation of Tatsunoko vs Capcom coming to USA (Japan only on Wii).
I always have liked the Capcom vs series gameplay a little bit more than SF.

Hmm if this rumor is true, I just might upgrade my phat, just wish it had video play back, that'd be sweet.
Oh, BTW Mr. Khan, I replied to your comment earlier on the Wii/RB thread.

Amendment to clarify:
The number of comments like that has certainly increased in volume in the last 2.5 months, and since that point each comment has been the same in that they all read like selling the Wii is a positive thing, like you're removing some sort of shackles or something
your comment, for instance, had that "high fives everyone else" sign, like all the non-Nintendo fanboys should be pleased that you sold your Wii
The boastful nature of said comments is what gets to me

Understandable, but surely you can see how I would feel screwed over by Nintendo. They showed us something amazing... but it was all a lie.
Sure, there were a few amazing games. But what do you have to look forward to in the next 2 years? Animal Crossing? Pikmin? It's sad really, I love me some Nintendo games... but the well's run dry.
Maybe I'm just not seeing "it", I don't understand why anyone could stand by the Wii now, I know it's pretty cliche but Nintendo has abandoned "us*", and personally, I just want some good games to play. So I went with the 360.
*People who stood by Nintendo during the "Dark Age" and still think the N64 is a million times better than the overrated PS1, and the GC was a solid console.

A camera and music player? How lame. How about some new first party titles instead?

I don't see this happening. For one, the DS is still selling well. Secondly, introducing new features would cut off early adopters from features that could be utilized in future games. The best thing to do would be to hold this off for DS2 or just sell it as such. Then again, we have WiiMotion Plus which will split the user base and basically force you to upgrade, depending on how many games use it.

This is exactly why there probably isn't a new one coming around.
The newspaper did it's own "research." It probably found some legit designs for new hardware. That's what hardware designers do. Did you see how many versions of something as simple as the Wii Wheel in Mario Kart went through before being finalized?
What I'm saying is, it probably wouldn't be hard to come across some legit prints for a DS with extra features, regardless of wither or not Nintendo ever had even the slightest intentions of implementing them.

Because it's still a DS (not likely a "DS2"), nintendo usually supports the entire line with every upgrade. I'm thinking, if this story is true, then they'll probably just integrate the peripherals that are already available into the new DS. The most likely is the DS Vision service, so you don't have to use an external cart. The camera would have the same functionality as the one that's already out (but integrated), and probably use the DS vision service to upload and print your own pictures. Maybe revamp that whole DS Vision service and integrate it with the Wii in some way.
Nothing earth-shattering, really. It may also be likely that this new DS won't be coming out in the US until there's some real functionality available there that takes advantage of the new features and uses more software titles. They may say this on thursday.

I think it's better with "no comment" than a "no it does not exist" as that's more of saying, yes there will be a new DS but we don't want to brag or talk about it or PSP will do the same thing and loose our suprise gadget.

Music on my DS might work for me. I, a harvest Moon DS player, get tired of the same music over and over. Imagine the smile on my face if I get to play HMDS with Rammstein musik :D

From nintendo thats a gold plated guarantee!!
I should dig up some of my posts from about SIX YEARS AGO saying that nintendo should release a GBA music system.. and then saying a DS music system. Back in those days they had a much bigger install base than the iPod, and they could have taken over the whole MP3 world... still, its not like nintendo to ever do the easy thing.
I hope it gets a little thinner and lighter... phones and iphones now make it look both underpowered and fat/heavy.
