SOE 'looking at' possible PSP MMO
Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley stated the company is considering an MMO for the PSP. He tells MTV Multiplayer that SOE started considering one seriously when the division was transferred over to Sony Computer Entertainment last April. SOE was previously under the control of Sony Pictures -- yeah, don't ask how that made any sense.
Smedley doesn't announce any games, but he says that kid-focused PS3 MMO Free Realms "could have a pet-training system" for the PSP. An MMO is clearly a good idea with 34 million PSPs currently out there, but from Smedley's comments it sounds like any realization of that seems years away.

A handheld MMO game? Just think, you can be a total loser with no life on the go! Man, I can't wait to grind levels as I go from my bedroom to the kitchen and raid the fridge.
zkey14 @ Sep 29th 2008 3:08PM
Sounds like someone fell victim to to the deceiving charm of MMO promises.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Generalizing a genre's players is just as ignorant as generalizing gamers as a whole.
Slayer @ Sep 29th 2008 3:28PM
Wow...couldn't the same exact thing be said about playing Call of Duty 4 online for hours? Couldn't that be said about any game?
Gurbinder @ Sep 29th 2008 9:05PM
Unfortunately I agree with Red Leader on this one since I've been scarred with MMOs. They are a waste of time and up to a point you realize you wasted your time playing it unless if you play with your friends of course but playing more than 3 hours is too intense with all the stupid quests and all. I perfer playing console games online since MMOs tend to never end.
Wasted 3 years on it, not planning on going back even if it comes to psp. I remember how my friend was warning me. However, MMOs arent that bad, if you know your limits your alright, just don't spend too much time on it.
If your weakminded like me, stay away from it. Dont say i didnt warn you.

Wake me up when that MMO is monster hunter, that game is kick ass :P And would be even more kick ass online :D
Deeznuts420 @ Sep 29th 2008 3:25PM
i was just about to say monster hunter mmo FTW. thank you sir.

what's a MMO anyway?
Titanium_Orchid @ Sep 29th 2008 6:26PM
MMO stands for Monkeys Manicuring Onions
Matt @ Sep 29th 2008 3:18PM
handheld MMO makes no sense when most of the time, most of the 34 million PSP systems are not connected to the INTERNET, making the online reality far from true.
does anybody really have their PSP always connected to the internet?
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Sep 29th 2008 3:29PM
Depends on how big or small the scale is.
I could very well see a small instanced MMO world with quests for parties up to 4 people (you're probably going to know at least 1 other person with a PSP so that you'd nag that person to death to buy the game as well).

This is where the built in wifi comes in handy. At home I am always connected as well as various vendors that offer free wifi and t-mobile hot spots. It's not like a cell phone with built in 3G connectivity but where I live almost every major retail outlet offers free wifi.
Superstar90 @ Sep 29th 2008 3:40PM
Well, I can't speak for everyone, but whenever I'm downtown, at home, at work or at school there is ALWAYS Wifi (most of the time it's not locked either), and it's pretty fast too. I play MKDS online at work a lot... so I would probably like to play this PSP MMO (of course it has to be good).

Every second of the day.
Matt @ Sep 29th 2008 4:32PM
i just dont see millions of people going down to starbucks or borders book store or local wifi hotspot to play a PSP MMO game online..
and when we are home arent we playing on our ps3, ps2, pc, 360, wii, or etc electronics... ??
BigD145 @ Sep 29th 2008 4:47PM
16 hour level grind on a 3-4 hour battery? Hmmm. I'm not sure about the math there.

The only time my PSP is offline is when it's sleeping.

I play my PSP at home all the time. The majority of people have wireless connectivity at their homes and it is also available at just about every retailer. The point is that there will be allot of chances to play the game. It's not like there needs to be a million people online at all times to enjoy an MMO.
Merciless.Fire @ Sep 29th 2008 8:28PM
Well, this would be the time to get those PSPs connected, would it not? But I do agree with this statement, it doesn't make sense when PSPs aren't really used extensively with internet. Until the majority of people get wi-fi as standard.
B @ Sep 29th 2008 3:19PM
I'd play a Everquest port on the PSP
Alzheimers @ Sep 29th 2008 3:32PM
Haven't they already announced Phantasy Star Online for the PSP? The DS is getting "Phantasy Star Zero" so it's not outside the realm of possibility that they could make it work in an MMO fashion.
(for your definition of MMO, that is)
Superstar90 @ Sep 29th 2008 4:04PM
No, Phantasy Star Portable was offline multiplayer only... it's weird though, the DS gets the online one and the PSP just gets the local one.
thesimplicity @ Sep 29th 2008 3:41PM
The bigger story here is "SOE looking at possibility of PSP game."
I feel like I haven't seen a new release since Crisis Core.
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Sep 29th 2008 8:15PM
Secret Agent Clank is pretty good as well as Chains Of Olympus (not sure of release date there).
Trulz @ Sep 29th 2008 3:58PM
SOE should look at the possibility of closing.
JB87 @ Sep 29th 2008 5:56PM
Why yes, they certainly *should* screw over all the people who enjoy their games.
Maverick Saturn @ Sep 29th 2008 6:58PM
Wheres the logic to that? I don't get it?
Charlie_Six @ Sep 30th 2008 1:20AM
If I could get internet connection everywhere i went, this would be great. But since I can't... bah!
I think they should put wi-fi on all public transit systems in the US. That's like the most common place I play my PSP.
devian @ Sep 30th 2008 6:33AM
@JB87, because you know, they already do?
