Twice the power? Why? After all, no one will ever use the full power of the PS3.

The Cell in the PS3 has 7 SPEs. The eighth core is disabled to increase yields, but is otherwise the same chip found in cell-based supercomputer clusters.

Your analyst needs to talk to more engineers. I'm hearing rumors that the cell's successor will have 24-32 SPUs and a more optimized, streamlined instruction set. It hasn't taped out yet, so it's all up in the air... the GPU industry has taught me that architectures can change in a matter of months, and die shrinks can be expected every year.

Gabe Newell better get his complaining going immediately. Both MS and Sony will be selecting either Intel's many-core Larabee or a many-core Cell. So Gabe is going to have to learn new multiprocessing techniques sooner or later.
