Update: In an interview with Videogaming247 Molyneux said he is "ambitious" for a day one patch but cannot confirm it will make day-one. The legendary designer did say the process is going well and that the team is close to a solution. The original post and original keynote information is availabe below which cited Molyneux had denied the delay.
According to French gaming site Game Focus, Lionhead CEO Peter Molyneux has denied recent reports that his upcoming role-playing title Fable 2 will not include online co-op at launch. Molyneux batted down the recent news during a keynote at the Festival du Jeu Vidéo (Video Game Festival) in Paris, yesterday. Late last week the Microsoft operated GamerScore Blog announced the "no online co-op" news to gamers, suggesting the mode could be added within a week of launch. GSB apologized for the absence and even quoted unnamed employees of Lionhead Studios, thanking fans for their patience and understanding. So, what happened?
There are three possible solutions to this equation: Microsoft and Lionhead had a miscommunication and the mode will be made available, Lionhead knows the mode is ready to go for launch or Molyneux is sure the European launch of Fable 2 will land at the same time as the update. Fable 2 is set to launch in North America on October 21 and in Europe on October 24 so he may be citing that date specifically. Considering the title has already gone gold and the mode is in question we're sure it isn't available on the disc and, regardless of time frame, will only be available via auto update. Microsoft has yet to respond for our request to comment on the matter.

I'll hold off on buying it until it's 100% in there, personally.

It may not be an automatic update. It's entirely possible that co-op will be enabled server side rather than client side.
I have a feeling that the delay is the result of their infrastructure not being ready, rather than the software on the disc.

What we mean is we doubt the option will be listed in the menus on the disc. Otherwise those who purchase the game and don't keep up with the news will think their copy is broken.
The option can be added via auto update.

They used it so heavily to promote the game, it would just be cheating the consumer to all of a sudden tell them they dont get it with the initial product. This was expected.

I'd go with your third option. The two French sites who initially ran the article
http://www.xbox360france.com/news-le-coop-de-fable-2-sera-bien-la-le-jour-j-nv5982.html
http://game-focus.com/?nav=new&nid=9462
state that Peter Molyneux was asked if Co-Op would be available for the *European* launch on October 24, to which he replied it would be.
It certainly doesn't say it won't be ready for the US launch, but the question asked appears to have been in relation to the European one, three days later.

Anyone who played the original Fable shouldn't care to much about the Co-op, I'd rather play solo and shape my own little world first tbh

The good news is that it will be included as part of the Fable 2 experience. At least it is something that he said and is putting in rather than telling about it and then not having it. Do I care if it is day 1? No, because I want to play some first before getting online with friends. Will I play online after a wee? Yeah, so hopefully within a few days it will be up (the update, that is).

Yeah, I am gonna play online after I take a leak... Oh, I mean after a week, not after a wee.

This game is sounding more and more like a pile of unfinished crud. The only thing he has sounded positive about is the story. I have the game pre-ordered but think I will cancel that and wait for the reviews to roll in.

Crud may be overstated, but point after point comes out that highlights how the game is flawed or rushed, instead of highlighting exciting points of the game. I hope it is a great game, but when Peter says things like this it makes me worry.
Per Peter M:
"I think the lip-sync is pretty bad, you know, the quality of the animation falls off, you know, quite a lot, I think the navigation can be a bit dodgy sometimes, I think the dog can get a bit fractured sometimes. But those are sideline issues, you're not going to care about those, they're technical issues, and I wish we'd had time to polish every single tiny second of the game."

I think he's just trying to avoid his history of overhyping everything he does. Better than a developer (*coughcliffybcough*) that wants to make love to their game.
All those issues are ones that I see in a lot of other recent games, in some form or other. So far, I think the positives outweigh the negative.
And hey, if not, there's always someone else to buy it from me used :P

IT'S LIONHEAD GUYS!!! The possibilities are endless, how about if they decided to hold off on it becasue they are trying to have a vs mode in the online... or even just maybe a 2 vs 2 arena mode in which 2 players on 1 box and 2 others on another!!!! RAPEEEEE!!!!!
The possibilities are endless....

I would rather have the game be released like this than have to wait. Im sick of waiting for this game. Certain games I am more than happy to let it go for a month or two to bake in the oven more. While this feature is cool, and will no doubt add hours onto the gameplay, I will probably play through it alone first.
I cant wait for this game!
