Look, you gotta understand, not everyone gets into a private party. But a public one? Man, you gotta have some bad luck -- or some funky smelling breath -- not to be invited in. Go on, prove that you're still worthy, apply for the Resistance 2 Public Beta. You can drop your answers here (remember, there's always a right answer, even if it doesn't count). Here's what Insomniac has to say:
"We'll notify you via e-mail if you are accepted into the Public Beta. Space is limited. So, if you want to get a chance to try out all the new multiplayer features in Resistance 2, such as the 8-player co-op and up to 60-player competitive multiplayer, apply now! Good luck!"

Is "public beta" the new catch phrase? I didnt know something could be public if it was by invitation only. Everyone is having a "public beta" these days but not a single one is actually public, all of them are closed.

100% Agree.
Public Beta means ANYONE can come in.Still, why do we need even need a beta when the game releases in about a month?
If it's to test server traffic, then I'm pretty sure that SONY'S FIRST PARTY DEVELOPER would have some much better tools to check that...

Its probably not for server traffic. Bungie did it to balance the multiplayer, make changes to weapons, balance maps. Also gamers have a tendency to find cheats and exploits that should be removed ASAP.
This also helps get the game some media time.
I agree that the language should be changed, Public sounds like it should be for everyone. I dont think you need to have any sort of NDA so that might be part of it too.
