D3 reveals satirical shooter 'Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard'
Vicious Cycle Software and D3Publisher have decided it's time to poke fun at our beloved (but grizzled!) space marines, revealing the first, scant details of their upcoming Xbox 360 and PS3 shooter, Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard. According to the press release, the award-winning writer behind Dead Head Fred, Dave Ellis, came up with the whole shebang-bang-bang.
As you might expect from a modern third-person shooter -- even a humorous one -- Eat Lead will employ a cover system (dubbed "point and cover") and "different interactive melee moves." Provided the game remembers that taking potshots at the genre doesn't exclude it from being judged as a shooter, The Return of Matt Hazard in Q1 2009 may just be welcomed. In fact, we're just about ready to join Matt's appropriately and believably terrible fansite.

The fansite is awesome. The only thing that would make it more awesome is if it was hosted by geocities.

That would be even funnier. Good call.
Now, this game will probably be one of the must have titles of all friggin time! However, I urge them to not let Dexter Dare in this title. He ruined things before.

When I bought Battlefield Bad Company I thought the game was a parody of every current FPS like in the commercials, sadly it wasn't.
I hope this one delivers, meanwhile the site is full of win.

That Haz-Matt Carts looks very believable.
If this game is genuinely funny, and it mocks the pathetic seriousness of Halo/Killzone and all that, then I'll go for it. Funny games are real hard to come by, especially in the first/third person shooter genres.

That's quite a long list of humorous FPS there Tiptup! Way to prove him wrong!

Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Armed and Dangerous were funny, but it has been awhile since those Planet Moon gems.
I think, in the screen shots, I see Matt fighting both strange labcoat goons who disappear in a weird blue dissentigrate sort of way and some zombie that appears to be warping in from hell.
If my guesses are right, I hope the enemies also include:
Robotic Ninjas
Dinosaurs
At least 2 species of out-of-water marine life
Russians
Nazis
English-speaking Aliens
Bears
At least one evil/amoral sentient computer being

I need this to be awesome.

Matt Hazard? Cousin of Duke Nukem?
Titanium_Orchid @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:23PM
Bastard son of Serious Sam
Marty @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:31PM
I'm sure he's somehow related to Will Rock as well. Obscure, I know, but there actually was a Serious Sam clone by the same name.
Dirty @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:52PM
Grand son of Taradino Cassatt

There's nothing about this that I don't like.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:42PM
A game making fun of how ridiculous fps games are these days? Fuck yeah I'm in.
Jacksons @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:44PM
Dead Head Fred was outstanding, so I'll keep an eye on this.
Eleniel @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:45PM
I was wondering when someone was finally going to get around to parodying all the super-gritty space marine shooters. Awesome!
AoE @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:42PM
Uhh.... they got around to it in 1996 with the release of Duke Nukem 3D, and again in the early 2000's with Serious Sam ;)
aj @ Oct 4th 2008 12:58AM
....and does no one remember "PO'ed"? (Or was that less a parody and more just bad? Hard to tell.)
...and as far as I can tell, "Postal 2" was intended to be a parody, and worked fairly well as a social statement, but was more "stupid" than "witty" in the end. But it still counts.
Joel @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:57PM
is this going a to be an arcade download or actual store bought game?
BigDaddyBooth @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:01PM
I bet none of you newbies even remembers the original game!!!!1!
I remember playing hours at the arcade with my buddies and our high-top pump shoes and faded jeans...
HandSandwich @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:27PM
I say they scrap this game and go ahead a make Haz Mat Carts. Chibi space marine racing? I'm so down for that.
Neuromancer @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:45PM
I can't wait, this series has been dormant way too long!
Favorite MH game: definately You Only Live 1,317 Times, you could actually hook up 2 N64 controllers and play with dual analog sticks!
Hawc @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:51PM
I hope the (secret) weapons are ridiculously over the top. Like a gun that shoots chainsaws.
BeckRokk @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:29PM
This sounds incredibly awesome. Hopefully its fate is not the same as Duke Nukem Forever, although it certainly would be the ultimate irony.
theturtle363 @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:29PM
The only way this could sound any better was if the guy was named Staff Sgt Max Fightmaster
Skuld @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:31PM
Any relation to this guy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Distant_Trumpet
Neuromancer @ Oct 6th 2008 9:53AM
May be the same guy

I am pretty sure he was called "Haz Matt" in High School.
Hazardous Materials?
Anyone?
