12:07PM Balance Board is on the floor in front of us.
12:10PM Nintendo's PR director, Marc Franklin, is at the podium welcoming everyone. He says he wants to talk about ... WiiWare. Reports that , to date, there have been 33 games released for the service. Gives a shout out to Lost Winds as being highly-downloaded.
12:12PM Two new games to announce today. First up is Tetris Party. Casey from Tetris Online is at the podium; the game is-up-and-running. It's developed by Hudson. We're getting a history lesson on Tetris.
12:14PM He says they challenged Hudsom to "take Tetris to the next level!" 18 new modes, some motion control based, some incorporating Balance Board. Tony, the game's producer, is demoing Field Climber mode. Blocks need to be placed so that a little guy can make his way up them.
12:16PM Next up is Shadow mode. It's a variant of puzzle play. You're given a silhouette that you need to fill in. You can skip through pieces, but are only given 10 skips. This can be played competitively. Another mode is Stage Racer. You actually take a block ? in this case a "T" ? and "drive" it downward through a course trying not to get hung up on anything.
12:21PM There's a new co-op mode that uses a wider well. Both players work together in the same well to clear lines and create Tetrises. Dual Spaces uses the same screen setup but is ... turn-based. Players attempt to fill in the "white space" before their opponents can. Wii Balance Board support is optional. Leaning forward-backwards controls drop speed. "Squatting" rotates pieces. The blocks are really large in this mode, but can be scaled smaller once you get the hang of it. The producer looks a little ... odd playing this way. Price announced: 1200 Wii points.
12:22PM Real Networks and Ninja Bee are showing Boingz
It''s a "2D-3D puzzler platformer." The Boinks are elastic creatures. You use the Wiimote to grab, stretch, and flick them around the level to reach exit gates.
12:26PM Boingz is physics-based an actually a bit reminiscent of LittleBigPlanet. The game is "designed for the Wii." Reeeally? Seriously, though, it looks like a retail release. There's a timed mode to challenge more hardcore players.
12:29PM Marc Franklin is back at the podium. He says that "dozens more games" are on the way to WiiWare. World of Goo launches Oct. 13. And that's a wrap!
(Yes, really.)
Another conference? Yes, Nintendo is hosting a second fall media summit conference. What else does the company have under its sleeve? We're told there will be a couple of announcements and then live demos.

MORE? As if they didn't drop enough megatons, already.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:18PM
I must've been sleeping through it yesterday cause I don't recall any megatons...
King Zargo @ Oct 4th 2008 9:40AM
Mario & Luigi 3
Like the best RPG series ever!!!
Duke @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:51PM
tmac, c'mon man, give them a little credit. It won't kill you.
Tiptup300 @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:57PM
A slimer DS and being able to use SD cards (which should have already been available) is a megaton? Especially after E3!?
samfish @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:03PM
Tmac's problem is he wouldn't know a megaton if it bit him in the ass. It stems from having really awful taste in games.
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:09PM
Megatons? Plural?
The only megaton I remember is Mario & Luigi 3, have we Wii owners been neglected so long that we consider Punch Out! a megaton now?
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:20PM
Oh shit, I forgot loading from SD cards. Something that took years of bitching to get done. Go Nintendo!
Josh @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:26PM
You guys are assholes.
Mr ESC,Lives Again. @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:27PM
Megatons? What did I missed?
(DSi Oh great the 1.3 re-release of another handheld)
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:28PM
No seriously, let me hear what megatons they dropped as far as the Wii is concerned. Maybe I missed something? I'd love to hear it.
DS is looking good, but that wasn't really the problem.
TwEE @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:34PM
Yes Slaziman Punch Out is a megaton for most people, but for people who just got into gaming I wouldnt expect them to understand.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:06PM
lol punchout's the megaton? A boxing game...that's not even on par with a regular boxing game?? You know you're desperate for games when you're making a big deal about a boxing game.
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:11PM
Sure its not on the level of regular boxing games
It surpasses them, far and away. Its not trying to be a sim, and that's what makes it so endearing. A refined, standalone version of the packed-in title that helped make Wii famous originally.
TwEE @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:15PM
Oh Tmac, Tmac, every male I know over 24 is going to go ape shit over this.. and its going to make your head explode because like most things you wont understand why.
Vidikron @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:20PM
I'm looking forward to Punch Out... assuming they don't ruin it with poor motion controls. But from what I've seen it looks like a straight remake. Nothing wrong with that, but not what I would consider a "megaton". There are very few potential remakes that I think would be worthy of that label and Punch Out isn't one of them.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:23PM
Hmm maybe it's cause i'm only 21 then. Seriously though you're right I don't understand why anyone is excited for a basic cartoony boxing game. Actually, I wouldn't understand why anyone would be excited for any sports game.
This doesn't surprise me though as over the last 2 years I've gotten used to the incredibly low standards wii owners have. It no longer bothers me.
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:25PM
Punch Out!! sounds like a good game, but not a MEGATON. 85 on Metacritic is my guess, you heard it here first.
Well Fed Troll @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:31PM
@ Twee
I get your point about "males over 24" but, Woah now, i loved punch out in my youth...
IMHO if there IS a choice, between playing, lets say, a Fight Night round 4 or Punch Out. Im going to have to lean towards FN rnd4. Stating the obvious here: there is more longevity by far with online play (FN rnd4).
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:34PM
Now I'm downvoted for making valid points? Ah fuck it, I don't get the people clicking those minuses, and none of them will bother to post telling me why I'm wrong
Done here, I really can't illustrate my point better than I have, and no one will reply. Enjoy your megatons.
@TwEE
Are you saying I just got into gaming? o,o
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:41PM
You're talking bad about nintendo that's what you're doing wrong, that's not allowed around these parts. Nevermind that all of their love is from what they did 10+ years ago, cause they sure as hell haven't done anything positive since then.
TwEE @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:56PM
Well Fed Troll.. Yeah I guess age dosnt have anything to do with it, I know teenagers who never game but they have a copy of super punchout, they seem to like it, but not as much as older people I know...
As for the Fight Night round 4 or Punch Out thing..
punchout isnt even a boxing game in the same sence as modern boxing games.. Id say its more like guitar hero then a boxing sim.
Slaziman, maybe I am. This is just anecdotal evidence but every guy I know who was around when punchout was king seems to have real hardon for the game, maybe its just nostalgia. Who knows.
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:00PM
Tmac. Opinion. Reality. Get it straight.
gst @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:49PM
Punch Out!! is not really comparable to a boxing sim. Same as I wouldn't compare Mario Kart to Gran Turismo.
One is meant to be a dedicatedly accurate sim. The other is meant to be an unrealistic cartoonish game based off the same basic concept of vehicles with wheels racing eachother.
That is, the only thing Punch Out!! shares with a Fight Night game is that the concept is based on punching people in the face.
Beyond that, the allure of Punch Out!! is that it is a simple concept that has proven itself to be addictively fun. The focus of most contemporary games (other than indie development), is to take a previous framework or genre and add a bunch of features to it. That is great. Experimentation and innovation is entirely necessary. However, the failure of many (over-hyped) games seems to be that there are a few good ideas that get ruined by a alot of incomplete or outright bad ideas.
Sometimes a game like, oh let's say Katamari Damacy, that has a simple singular premise, is going to just be more fun than a big blockbuster loaded with features. Then again, if your game is based around a single concept, it becomes polarizing; it is either your cup of tea, or it offers you next to nothing.
Punch Out!! is a singular good idea. For its substantial old fanbase, the gameplay is simple, easy to understand, and fun. It is also one good idea that hasn't really been copied or capitalized on in years (unlike many franchises that were once simple and fun which have been run into the ground).
So, if you are going to rate games based off how they offer things you've never seen before or are innovative, then clearly it is not the game for you. If you thought the originals were fun and would be glad to have more, then it will almost undoubtedly be a worthy purchase.
Maybe it seems to make Nintendo's job too easy, but the only way they could screw Punch Out!! up is by adding too many new things, running the risk of choosing a feature that just doesn't improve the interface (which is delightful in its simplicity IMO) or choosing a feature that alienates old fans and new users.
With that said, I wouldn't shell out 50$ for it on day 1 or anything, but I am glad to see the game hit the market and it will almost certainly end up in my games library.

Well, yesterday was pretty awesome. Don't know how this would top it.
Bad Mojo @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:14PM
How about something megaton that can apply to this calendar year?
Now THAT would be awesome.
Zertoss @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:17PM
Another conference, another time paradox.
Shadow Hog @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:40PM
No Cave Story mention?
samfish @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:40PM
That's it..?
Where's my new 2D Zelda? Where's my DKC4?
Come on, Nintendo – third parties have had enough time to drop big steamers on WiiWare. Time to show them how it's done.
Ranus Studios @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:42PM
Uhm.
Waffle @ Oct 3rd 2008 12:46PM
I hope that they show us some awesome stuff that'll be realeased THIS YEAR.

How do we go about your avatar bub?
(+)?? (-)?? Im so confused... guess i give it a neutral rating (-+).
Oh and IMO, i just feel Nintendo should stop being that.... Nintendo...
Too innovative for its own good.
Remember N64 and the "Booster Pack" to enhance graphics...what was that about? and why was it built into the system waay before we knew what it was for?
Revamp & upgrade the Game Cube minus the mini discs...
and i'll jump on board .... again.
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:07PM
I don't get the people that say "yay Nintendo, i love you again!!!" because they are getting Punch Out! and S&P2. That are the only noteworthy new games, if I recall correctly.
DS gamers have stuff to be happy about, but Wii owners are still getting screwed.
CJLopez @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:15PM
I don't see how
People is only focussing on punch out and S&p2, but i saw a pletora new games on that press conference, with which i'm pretty happy
Wii's library has a bright future... at least for me
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:21PM
Really? Could you list those games... leave out the ones coming in 2009 please.
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:48PM
Leave out the ones coming in 2009?
You're left with Wii Music and Animal Crossing, then. As well as good variants of Sonic Unleashed and World at War, though a better version of the latter (former is arguable) found on PS360
It is a sad lineup for late 08 still, this did nothing to change that. Just put an incredibly bright light at the end of that tunnel.
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:16PM
What's that incredibly bright light at the end? o_O
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:04PM
For me, i'm on for one great game a month through the first four months of 2009. MadWorld, The Conduit, Punch Out!, and Sonic Black Knight.
Murasama: The Demon Blade is probably in there somewhere, too. Then the DS gets a bit of love with Fire Emblem.
Onion @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:15PM
I actually don't think Little Big Planet is that original. Right now it's the talk of the town, but it's a platformer with a stage editor; and from the gameplay footage, the game mechanics is like many games that we played from the SNES era.
Slaziman @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:31PM
What about the physics stuff?
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:34PM
"I actually don't think Little Big Planet is that original."
And the Wiimote is a gimmick and the Wii is just a fad. Reggie didn't covet LBP because he has a hardon for failure. Seriously, you're the last fanboy demographic that should be even touching the points you tried to make.
Was Mario Galaxy original or the Wii? By the metric Wii itself is held (creative arrangement of existing ideas), then yeah LBP is original. I think it's only sin in your eyes is not being available on your chosen platform. Otherwise known as PEBS (Popular Exclusive Backlash Syndrome, e.g. Halo, MGS).
DarkNessBear @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:59PM
Ok, it can not be original. But I have had more fun with LBP than I have with any other game... ever. I've never laughed so damn hard.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:11PM
Define what you mean by original, cause yes it's a platformer but by that definition alone all platformers are the same cause there's running jumping etc etc.
I'm playing the beta now and I can tell you there's already a lot of crazy shit in some of these people's levels. Stuff that's never been in a regular platformer before. If that doesn't count as original then I'm completely lost.
Mr ESC,Lives Again. @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:21PM
Nice but..When the hell are they going to start working on Kid Icarus Wii or a new Star fox?
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:51PM
It is well known that Factor 5 is up to SOMETHING, though its mostly Matt C's fancy and a few leaked art assets that puts forth the idea that what they're working on is Kid Icarus
Star Fox has been pitched back and forth, but the franchise itself has fallen from its former glory, so it may not get as much attention as some would like.
Josh @ Oct 3rd 2008 1:43PM
I wish Nintendo would make their own Mega Man 9s on WiiWare for Zelda, Mario, etc.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:36PM
I think the only reason they haven't is because they don't have anywhere to store all the money it would generate.
TwEE @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:07PM
A new 8-bit startropics would be nice..
