Cammie: Pikmin Wiimake 'not the Pikmin Miyamoto referred to'
If you were overcome by that sinking feeling -- more like a freefalling plummet -- after reading yesterday's news, fret not, Cammie Dunaway has confirmed that there is a true Pikmin sequel in the works. "It's not the Pikmin that Mr. Miyamoto referred to, no. Mr. Miyamoto referred to a new Pikmin, as opposed to the classics that are being rereleased on Wii," Dunaway reassured IGN. See? Nintendo does care about you. Just be patient. There are a lot of exciting projects holding up the queue.

I kinda figured such was the case. The mention of one with no mention of the other had me a bit worried, however.
Will this news help where it should help (i.e. shut up the people wailing about how Nintendo was re-releasing old games for the core instead of making new ones)? Probably not. Those people have a pretty fixed idea of reality.

Sometimes the truth hurts. It is certainly easier to be pessimistic about it than optimistic given the way things on the Wii have gone.
I don't have very much in the lineup they have shown.
Let me make myself crystal clear: It's not fair to be against Nintendo for being Nintendo. They have always made cartoony and kiddie games with fun and simple mechanics. The problem is (for me) that they still continue to do the same exact thing to this day. When I was much younger I was into that stuff just like I was into GI Joes and Hot Wheels. Now, I want something more mature.
Perfect example of a game that would make me content. Something along the lined of Conkers Bad Fur Day. Doesn't have to look like MGS 4, Halo 3 or GTA 4 but please some mature content, a real story and production values greater than the same song and dance.
The best they have done on the Wii is Wario Shake It, Metroid Prime & Zelda. I just want some games not geared towards a 9 year old.
How about a new Killer Instinct! Problem solved.
Foetoid @ Oct 3rd 2008 5:28PM
Um Immortal, it was Rare who made the Mature games you mentioned. Nintendo themselves have always made the same games. Disaster: Day of Crysis is a bit different, but even then they're outsourcing development on that one. Nintendo games have thier own feel and magic that no other game developer on the planet can replicate, no matter how 'childish' the game is. Zelda and Metroid are about as mature as you're ever going to see consistently from Nintendo and it's not a bad thing. The Paper Mario games, The regular Mario games, the Pikmin games, they're all excellent titles worthy of being owned and played by the most hardcore of gamers despite being a bit childish in appearance.
Envoy @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:50PM
Has anyone noticed Nintendo is on a roll?
ice~ @ Oct 3rd 2008 5:27PM
i wouldnt say theyre on a role but the future looks promising :D
we'll see what happens at TGS
Snowblind @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:04PM
Because they've announced a few games (with very little footage), while Microsoft and Sony are both releasing a lot of very high profile games?
Nintendo hasn't quite won me back just yet, although I am excited about a lot of these games. I had assumed that the reason for porting the original Pikmin games was to set up for a third one though.
Envoy @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:10PM
True I am more excited for what PS3 and 360 are bringing but it's good to see that Nintendo still got things up their sleeves.
phobic99 @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:17PM
Nintendo is on a roll? I'm still wondering why I haven't sold my Wii yet.
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:18PM
I certainly think so, but others would disagree, depending on varying tastes.
They're certainly on a roll in the sense that they're doing a much better job of promoting their platform. The E3 performance was a bad performance for more reasons than the lack of games. It just seemed like Nintendo was phoning it in. It seemed like they had no long-term plan for their platforms. They addressed no problems, proposed nothing new or radical, etc. It was more a retrospective on their success than anything about their plans for the future.
Instead, in the last few days, they've showcased the future of their platforms quite well, how they're working to re-draw the DS, resolved one of the Wii's most nagging issues, showed a good array of first and 2nd party titles, as well as a broad array of 3rd party titles to cater to many tastes. Then today they showed the support for WiiWare.
monkeyhole @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:47PM
@Phobic:
Just sell your Wii and shut up already. I don't buy a pair of Adidas I don't like, then whine because I wished I had bought a pair Nikes instead. You just get rid of the stuff you don't want. Simple.
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:48PM
On a ROLL?
That's like saying Sarah Palin is now on a roll after her interviews with Couric and Gibson because her head didn't explode at the debate last night.
They are not on a roll ... They are just not totally sucking hard like at E3. We still haven't seen many solid release dates and very little footage of their games. The only Wii game that I know releasing this holiday is Wii Music. I can't name another big time game.
It's not a roll it's just not as bad as before.
Look's like Wii fans are eating some humble pie. The same people saying PS3 fans have "just wait until _____ list" are championing less than a full minute of footage as a sign Nintendo is back on top of things. PuuuHlease. All we have heard is Game Cube remakes, ports, remakes and a handful of new IPs.
Who knows WHEN this will come to fruition.
time @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:13PM
yay!
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:22PM
Well that's good news, but who knows when it'll come out. We don't know anything other than it being in production. And it's still only 1 game.
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:50PM
Exactly. +1
mr nimblewick @ Oct 3rd 2008 10:23PM
Uh... Sin and Punishment 2 and Punch Out ring a bell?
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Oct 4th 2008 7:28AM
Punch Out looks rubbish. Sin and Punishment looks alright.
Sidepocket @ Oct 5th 2008 4:15PM
Anyone who says Punch Out looks rubbish loses all their gaming credibility.
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:38PM
Consider this.
If Nintendo wanted to, they could have built the Wii to be able to play all GCN games with Wii controls (or at least makeshift ones) from the start.
Instead they rerelease games your Wii CAN ALREADY PLAY and charge you for it.
I would be more interested in more TRUE remakes like S&P2 and Knock Out!!. Where is Starfox 64 Wiimake, with IR aiming and... motion controller barrel rolls?!?!?
Sidepocket @ Oct 5th 2008 4:16PM
In Super Mario Galaxy, they have mushrooms and Bowser, just like Super Mario 64! HOLY SHIT REMAKE!
In Metroid Prime 3 you are shooting in an FPS view, combat Space Pirates and use visors. OMFG REMAKE!
In Madden you toss a ball around by pressing buttons, go through carrier mode and can create your own player. GTFO REMAKE!
In Resident Evil 5, it has the same exact controls as RE4, fighting against parasitic humans and have to combat Umbreall. JESUS CHRIST WILL THE REMAKES EVER FUCKING END!?!

Monkeydog @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:53PM
"If Nintendo wanted to, they could have built the Wii to be able to play all GCN games with Wii controls (or at least makeshift ones) from the start."
Uhh..no. Programming games doesn't work that way.
Unless you consider it being like how the Virtual Console controls games...but that isn't really Wii controls at all, at least how these GCN games are going to be remake. Plus better quality in visuals help make it worth it to some people.
(and how is S&P2 a remake?)
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:59PM
I don't know about S&P2 but Punch damn sure is a remake.
samfish @ Oct 3rd 2008 5:41PM
So first you say,
"We still haven't seen many solid release dates and very little footage of their games."
And then, based on that, you say,
"I don't know about S&P2 but Punch damn sure is a remake."
Not that I need to go any further to discredit you, but for the record, we already know there's supposed to be a female in the new Punch-Out, too. It was unclear if you could play as her or just fight her, though.
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 5:54PM
Ehh, i think they're just cranky. Nintendo disproved a lot of the bogus claims they've been making since E3, and now their retort is "well, they're still sucky games!"
We're just seeing another shift in the anti-Wii party line.
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 3rd 2008 7:05PM
Samfish
Did you see the trailer for Punch Out? It's the same exact dodge, dodge, punch punch gameplay it was before. Nothing changed from the first punch out except a graphical update. How is that not a remake?
It's just a better looking, 3-D & waggle using version of the original.
How is that false????? So, because there is a FEMALE it makes it what??? It's a remake or for a lack of a better term a re-imagining similar to what Bionic Commando Rearmed was for the XBLA & PSN. It's not a bad thing but don't try to make it out like (from what we have seen) it's a proper sequel like Super Punch Out was to Mike Tyson's Punch Out.
FACT: Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, and King Hippo are all shown as opponents and the interface appears similar to Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!.
What were you babbling about? Discrediting? Look, I know you are a huge Nintendo fan and that's OK. But, if we be realistic about what we have seen so far it's only obvious to assume that it is a remake of Mike Tyson's punch out.
samfish @ Oct 4th 2008 12:26AM
"Did you see the trailer for Punch Out? It's the same exact dodge, dodge, punch punch gameplay it was before."
By that ridiculous logic, just about every sequel ever is a remake.

Just a quick reminder: This is coming from the woman (lol, females) who can't tell the difference between first-person and first-party...
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 5:50PM
I'm wondering if that wasn't a fruedian slip, or something that she deliberately said but was later told she shouldn't have.
Or explain why Nintendo loves one untested 3rd party so much as to provide them with SDK access to WiiSpeak and Motion Plus?
Roto13 @ Oct 4th 2008 12:59PM
So you've never misspoken before? *sigh*
Faloo @ Oct 3rd 2008 6:03PM
Kinda a good move.
Rerelease pickmin as a classic with good wii controls(they do fit that game) and make it popular just before releasing a sequel.
SKI @ Oct 4th 2008 10:51AM
It is similar to what they were doing with the VC and new releases.
Berty200 @ Oct 3rd 2008 6:34PM
Phew. Thank you. They had me worried. I'm glad for the wiimakes too, though. But I thought... PHEW!
tkAshur @ Oct 3rd 2008 7:51PM
It makes sense. Why else would they just bring gamecube remakes of metroid and pikmin? Because there's a copy paste system there, they can take the code from the new games and apply to the old ones. As for Chibi robo, that might mean theres a new one of those in the works too!
Mr Khan @ Oct 3rd 2008 9:48PM
If so, its a ways off. Skip (the dev) just finished their last game (Captain Rainbow) about a month and a half ago.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Oct 4th 2008 10:27AM
thank god. i was so disappointed when i read the news about the Pikmin remakes. i thought that had been the Pikmin they had talked about previously. gives me back a Wii title to look forward to again.
Ethan @ Oct 4th 2008 12:40PM
It just might get cancelled if you don't buy it in droves.
