That sucks. Seriously. Region coding is such an archaic practice.

At least in America, it affects a very small population, as many wouldn't want to import another version of the game (either because of the language differences, or because of the cost). So preventing those of us from importing is pointless and wouldn't result in a noticible loss of profits for the region.

For Europe, though... I'm sure importing is a much bigger thing over there; due to late releases, lower prices, and many Europeans understanding English.

Not that it changes my opinion, Nintendo does state their reasons for region locking: parental controls and net services tailored for each region.

Still sucks, though.

Being in Europe - this has killed any interest I had in the thing.

Goddammit, Nintendo. Fuck off, seriously. -_-

I have imported so many JP and, yes, EU titles it's not even funny. This just killed at least one purchase (import -or- domestic), I hope others will give them the proverbial middle finger and buy a used system too.

*Bollocks.*

Arrgh, I guess I'm going to have to deal with Japanese DS Ware games, then; I'm not waiting for Nintendo of America's BS slowness...

On a side note, is the possibility/inevitability/confirmation of DSi-only game card/cartridge-based games contained in this statement new information? Well, whether it is or not, it says a lot about Nintendo's focus on the DSi.

If I buy a JPN DSi, I can play all my NA DS games, and any JPN DS/DSi games, correct?

Can I only buy downloadable games if I connect to internet in Japan?

I was planning on buying a JPN and NA DSi, so the only trouble I should have is switching between DSi's, right? Just want to clarify, thanks.

If it's true that they're going to make DSi-only carts, they've now officially gone from penny-pinching to plain ol' greedy.

I've been planning on getting a DS for a while, but have held off until I got an idea of when the next generation was coming out. This makes me wonder if I should get a PSP instead. Nintendo makes good software, and lately they've found their place in the market and been very successful, but some of their policies frankly stink. For one, they seem not to care at all about their core fanbase when it comes to things like the storage problem on Wii, and now that they finally announce a band-aid for it, everyone will have to wait another six months. They're over-charging for Wii, nickel-and-diming customers on neccessary components for it, and now they're slapping a camera and memory slot on the DS (which they could have easily built into a $30 peripheral for the GBA slot), treating it like a totally new system, and making customers re-buy virtually identical hardware at a new higher price to ensure compatibility. The closest Nintendo has been to doing something like this before was Gameboy Color, but in that case the color screen was something not possible with a peripheral, and the actual processing hardware was upgraded. Their new strategy with DSi seems to go against the whole idea of a standardized hardware platform, and it smells like greed to me.

I've been a long-term Nintendo fan, but have lately been very unimpressed with some of their business practices. I'm really hoping some other company steps up to engage the mainstream casual market, gives Nintendo some competition, and lets people know they don't have to put up with things like this.
